a computer with the help of the enclosed software via a WLAN (Wi-Fi

Safety precautions
When using the device, observe the following safety precautions to
avoid any damage or injuries:
■ Do not allow children to play with the device. The device and the
protective cap can be easily swallowed by children.
■ Inspect the device for visible signs of damage before use. Do not
use a damaged device.
■ Do not open the device. Unauthorised opening and repairs can
lead to considerable danger for the user of the device. Only allow
qualified persons to carry out repairs. Improper repairs will void the
warranty.
■ Protect the device against moisture and penetration by liquids.
■ Clean the housing of the device with a slightly damp cloth. Do not
use any aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents or solvents.
Disposal
CAUTION
Do not dispose of the device as normal household waste. Observe the disposal instructions in the user manual appendix.
Recycling the packaging material for further use saves raw materials
and reduces the waste. When no longer required, dispose of the packaging materials in accordance with the local regulations.
NOTE
► Keep the original packaging during the warranty period in order to
pack the device properly in the event of a warranty claim.

Description
Description
This small-size device is a WLAN (Wi-Fi) network adapter with high
data transmission rate for use with the Universal Serial Bus (USB).
The device allows you to connect your computer directly to a WLAN
access point or WLAN router. You can also connect your computer
to other WLAN devices. This increases mobility and makes use of all
advantages of wireless connections, high transmission speed and
high-speed connections with maximum operational security.

The device is supplied with the following components as standard:
● WLAN USB stick with protective cap
● USB 2.0 extension cable
● Installation CD-ROM
● User manual
NOTE
► Inspect the contents of the package for completeness and obvious
signs of damage. Report incomplete or damaged items to your

Function LED
The function LED installed in the device flashes when accessing the
network.
Requirements for operation
The following requirements must be met for installation and operation
of the device on your computer:
● A free USB port on the computer.
NOTE
► A USB 2.0 port is recommended, USB 1.1 functions with a
reduced data rate.
● A computer with one of the following operating systems installed:
– Microsoft® Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit edition),
– Microsoft® Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit edition),
– Windows XP® (32-bit or 64-bit edition)
(Service Pack 3 or higher recommended).
– MAC OS X 10.5.x/10.6.x
● Pentium-class computer or notebook (500 MHz CPU or better).
● At least 256 MB RAM and 50 MB free hard disk space.
● A CD-ROM drive.
NOTE
► If you wish to connect additional computers to the WLAN, you
need additional WLAN USB sticks.

Inserting the USB WLAN stick
‹ Switch on your computer and insert the device into a free USB
port or USB hub connected to the computer.
CAUTION
Do not use excessive force when inserting the WLAN USB
stick into the port. This could result in damage to the USB
port of your computer.
► Check whether the USB stick fits the other way round.
CAUTION
The USB port or your laptop can be damaged by the protruding USB stick.
► Use the USB extension cable supplied for connecting to a
laptop.
Removing the USB WLAN stick
‹ After shutting down the computer, pull the USB WLAN stick out of
the USB port of the computer.
CAUTION
Possible data loss when writing to a network drive.
If the WLAN USB stick is removed during a data transfer, data
may be lost when writing data to the network drive.
► Close all open programmes to ensure that all application data
has been saved.
► Shut down the computer correctly before removing the USB
WLAN stick.

Installation under Windows
In order to install the WLAN USB stick onto your computer, the following steps must be performed in the specified order:
1) Install the driver and the configuration software using the installation programme on the CD supplied with the device.
2) Reboot the computer.
3) Insert the WLAN USB stick.
4) Configure the device.
NOTE
Before starting the installation, observe the following instructions:
► Use a USB 2.0 port for the optimum performance of the device.
► Save all data and close all running application programmes.
► If you already have another version of the drivers and configuration software installed on the computer, uninstall these first.
Installing the driver and configuration software
The following describes the installation of the driver and the configuration software for the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7
operating systems.
NOTE
► The installation is more or less the same for all the above operating systems. Any differences are explained in separate notes.
► The display of the menus may differ according to operating system. The following illustrations relate to a clean installation of the
respective operating system.

‹ Place the programme and driver CD supplied into the CD drive of
your computers. The installation programme starts automatically.
NOTE
► If you have deactivated the autoplay function and the installation programme does not start automatically, start the installation programme by double-clicking the "autorun.exe" file in the
main directory on the CD.
Windows Vista / Windows 7
► Execution of the "autorun.exe" programme under Windows
Vista and Windows 7 must be confirmed manually. Click the
"Run autorun.exe" icon.
The main menu of the installation programme is displayed.

In order to install the WLAN USB stick onto a Macintosh computer, the
following steps must be performed in the specified order:
1) Insert the WLAN USB stick.
2) Install the driver and the configuration software using the image file
supplied on the CD.

4) Configure the device.

Installing driver and configuration software
The following describes the installation of the driver and the configuration software for the Mac OS X operating system.
NOTE
► Make user that you possess all necessary administrator rights for
installation.
► The display of the menus may change according to the operating system described. The following illustrations relate to a clean
installation of the respective operating system.
‹ Insert the Hama WLAN USB stick into a free USB 2.0 port and
start the computer.
‹ After loading of the operating system has completed, insert the
driver CD-ROM into your drive. The icon for the inserted CD-ROM
appears on your desktop.
‹ Double-click the icon and select the the MAC Driver from the
Finder window. The DMG-file required for installation is located
there.
‹ Double click the corresponding DMG-file to activate the image.
‹ After the image has been activated, please select the correct
folder for the MAC OS X version installed on your computer and
subsequently double-click the corresponding PKG-file. The installation then starts.
‹ Select the hard disk for installing the driver and configuration
programme.
‹ It will be necessary to reboot the computer afterwards.

Starting the configuration programme
The "Hama Wireless LAN Utility" configuration programme can be
executed in a number of ways:
■ Start the programme via Start -> All Programs -> Hama Wireless LAN -> Hama Wireless LAN Utility
■ Start the programme by double-clicking the "Hama Wireless LAN Utility" desktop icon.
■ Start the programme by double-clicking the circled symbol in the
taskbar shown below.
■ Right-click the illustrated symbol in the task bar and select "Open
configuration" in the context menu.

Deletes the selected profile.
The settings of the selected profile can be
edited.
Imports an previously created profile.
Exports the selected profile (e.g., for data
backup).
Quick connection to routers or access points
that support quick establishment of connection via the WPS function.

When adding a new profile or editing an existing profile, a new window
opens in which the settings for the profile can be made.
Profile name:
Name of the profile for easier identification.
For example: "Office" or "Home".
SSID
(Network name):
The unique network name as it is displayed
in the list of available networks.
Network type:
Select type of network connection:
Infrastructure for connection to a router/access point
Ad hoc for direct connection to another
WLAN-capable device.
Channel:
This selection is only available for an ad
hoc network. A fixed channel number
between 1 and 13 must be set for the connection.
Cancel processing.

settings for the network to be connection.
The following is available: open, shared,
WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2, WPA2-PSK,
802.1x.

be disconnected and resumed at another
location at a later time.
"Wi-Fi Protected Setup"
The detail view "Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)" allows quick connection to routers or access points that support the rapid setup of connections using the WPS function.
Two methods connection establishment are supported:
■ PIN entry method (PIN code)
■ Press button configuration method (with WPS button)

PIN entry method (PIN)
‹ Select "PIN code" for the PIN entry method.
‹ Activate the "Auto" checkbox.
‹ Click the
"Continue" button.
‹ Enter the eight-digit PIN code during the WPS configuration of the
router or access point.
‹ Click the
"Continue" button.
‹ Begin the PIN entry method by clicking the "Begin PIN" button.
The connection is automatically established as soon as a router or access point with the entered PIN code is found.
NOTE
► If the name of the router or access point is known, it can be
preselected from the list of WPS-compatible devices.
► Consult the documentation on your WPS-compatible router or
access point to find out how the PIN code is to be entered.

Press button configuration method (PBC)
In the case of the press button configuration method, you must have
access to the router or access point because the PBC button must be
pressed after searching has started.
‹ Select the "with WPS button (PBC)" for the press button method.
‹ Click the
"Continue" button.
‹ Begin the press button method by clicking the "Start PBC" button.
‹ Press the PBC button on the router or access point.
The connection is automatically established after the corresponding
router or access point is found.
NOTE
► The search for the router or access point can take up to a minute.
► Consult the documentation on your WPS-compatible router or access point to find out where the PBC button is located.

‹ Activate the "Pre-logon" option if the network connection should
take place prior to user logon.

"Activate" button to activate the profile. Connection to
the wireless network of the activate profile is established automatically after the computer is rebooted.
Deinstallation
To uninstall the driver and the configuration programme, proceed as
follows:
‹ Click Start ->All Programs -> Hama Wireless LAN -> Uninstall to
start deinstallation.
‹ Confirm the confirmation prompt with "Yes". The driver and the
configuration programme are uninstalled.

After installation of the driver, the network neighbourhood must be
configured to match the new situation.
Proceed as follows:
‹ Click the Apple icon on the upper menu bar and select the "network" system setting item in the menu.
The following window appears:
‹ Acknowledge the message with "OK".
NOTE
► If you do not see the message as displayed above, the Hama
WLAN USB stick was not properly recognized. Make sure that the
stick is properly connected to a USB 2.0 interface and the USB
2.0 interface card was correctly installed in your system!
After the Hama WLAN USB stick has been properly detected, the following window is opened.
‹ Select the "Edit environment.." option under the Environment
menu item.

‹ Click the "+" button and enter a name for the new environment
such as WLAN and click the OK button.
‹ Reselect the Environment menu item in the network window and
click on the newly created environment which we named WLAN
for our example.
NOTE
► Selection of the connections can differ according to the MAC
model and equipment.
‹ Delete all network connections except the new one, e.g., "802.11n
WLAN" or "USB-Ethernet". Mark those not required and then click
on "-" below.
‹ Subsequently click the "Use" button. This completes configuration
of the system.

Starting the configuration programme
You can use the Wireless Utility supplied for configuring the Hama
WLAN adapter. This automatically executed during starting. If it is not
visible, click the "Ralink" icon in the dock.
"Network overview" detail view
All networks detected within range of the network adapter are displayed in the "Network overview" detail view after the programme
starts.

Quick configuration
‹ First of all, select the desired WLAN network for clicking the
relevant row in the list. The desired network is now highlighted in
blue.
‹ Now click the Connect button (E).
NOTE
► You are connected to a network when the selected network is
operated without encryption and the signal strength is sufficient.
You can recognize this by the green symbol and the Connected
indication in the status window (C).
If the selected network is encrypted, you will be prompted for the network code in the following window.
‹ Enter the network code for the network. This data is available from
the person who set up the wireless LAN.
NOTE
► Further information on possible encryption types can be found in
the section on data encryption.

Creating a profile
If a particular WLAN connection is to be used more often, it is useful
to create a profile for it. A profile serves the purpose of storing various
settings for a connection under a certain name.
To create a new profile, you need the following information:
■ SSID (network ID): this the network name of the desired network,
■ Encryption type: type of encryption used in the target network,
■ Network type: Infrastructure or ad hoc,
■ Network code for establishing connection to the network.
To create a new profile, proceed as follows:
‹ Open the wireless utility. You have the possibility to select the desired network via the network overview tab (Site Survey) and then
to start the dialogue via the ADD PROFILE button or to change to
the profile tab and start the dialogue there by confirming with the
ADD button.
‹ Enter a name for your profile (Profile name).
‹ Select the network for connection out of the list of available networks under SSID.

WEP encryption
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a standard encryption algorithm for
WLAN. It controls access to the network and ensures data integrity.
If you wish to use WEP encryption, select the following settings:
Authentication type:
The network authentication must match the
settings for the network to be connection.
Open and Shared are available for selection.
Encryption type:
Set WEP here.
Key 1-4:
Up to 4 keys can be stored here. The key
that is marked is the one that is used. Select
whether you want to use hexadecimal (only

64-bit or 128-bit encryption is supported, whereby 128-bit encryption
offers a higher security. The choice between 64 and 128-bit encryption

WPA encryption
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is an encryption method for WLAN.
WPA consists of the same architecture as WEP, but offers additional
protection by the use of dynamic keys that are based on Temporal Key
Integrity Protocol (TKIP) and also offers PSK (Pre-Shared Keys) or
Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) for user authentication which
however, requires a radius server.
As far as authentication is concerned, WPA differentiates between
pre-shared key and authentication via special authentication protocols
that mostly deal with variations of the EAP (Extensible Authentication
Protocol). The pre-shared key method is more common and offers a
high degree of security.
