PREFACE
The Imagine Symbols Collection arose from a need in the field of assistive technology (AT) for
a contemporary alternative communication symbol set that could be used by teens and adults
for everyday communication. The project was initiated by a consortium of four independent
companies: the Attainment Company, Inc., the Great Talking Box Company, Madentec Ltd., and
Saltillo Corporation. The symbol set is now available for download at no charge for individual,
noncommercial use at www.ImagineSymbols.com.
Symbol Development and Use
Creating the symbols began by reviewing AT research on symbols, icons, and vocabulary. Words were
selected from lists of words and phrases most frequently used for communication, keeping in mind
the focus on teens and adults.
Each symbol was conceptualized by a team of individuals with varying backgrounds, including users
of symbols. The symbols were created to be easily identifiable in any culture or language. Special
techniques were employed, like shading an element of a drawing to elicit a word or using color
to draw attention to the key word. If a user doesn’t recognize an image, the teacher or therapist
can teach the intended word. The symbols also use consistent elements to help users identify
the intended vocabulary word. For example, the same icon is used in the symbols for a variety of
community buildings. Symbols may be interchangeable or have multiple meanings; for example, in
the emotion section, “excited” for one person might be “ecstatic” for another person.
Each symbol was reviewed by a testing panel that included therapists, teachers, and individuals
with cognitive or other disabilities. These users were asked to identify the symbol without additional
information and to suggest how to more clearly elicit the specific vocabulary word. When a symbol
was not easily recognized by a majority of the panel, it was reconceptualized based on the feedback.
Imagine Symbols can be used in a wide variety of ways to assist those who need visual supports in
their daily lives. The symbols are ideal for creating communication overlays, enhancing worksheets,
and developing computer-generated presentations.
