Quick Start Guide Using your machine ESP6SXL - 1/09 A 1 2 3 4 PUSH Before First Use Remove Water Tank from top rear of machine B 1 C Fill Water Tank with fresh cold water 2 One-Time Priming Priming cleanses the internal system. You must prime before first use. Wash Water Tank 3 POWER or DOUBLE SHOT Ensure Water Tank is full 1 POWER HEATING Turn 'POWER' on. Wait Choose Filter Size until the 'HEATING' light goes out. 8 D Turn dial to 'STANDBY' when the correct amount has poured (see section D) 7 8 Insert and Lock empty Turn dial to 'ESPRESSO After approx. 5 mins, Portafilter into EXTRACTION' . water will flow Brew Head Machine will vibrate and pump. POWER HEATING 5 6 Use flat end of Coffee Scoop to evenly tamp ground coffee 1/8" below Filter rim 1 Turn dial to 'ESPRESSO Turn dial to 'STANDBY' EXTRACTION' and once Cup is full. run water for 5 secs Discard water. to preheat machine 2 = SINGLE SHOT FILTER 3 1 Fill Jug ½ way (MAX) 2 1oz = 1oz SINGLE SHOT 4 3 After Extraction Cleaning 2 SINGLE SHOTS DOUBLE SHOT FILTER 5 DOUBLE SHOT FILTER Extract 2oz into 1 Cup for 1 x 2oz double shot 6 FILTER 4 POWER HEATING When the outside of the Jug is JUST too hot to touch, turn dial to 'STANDBY' 5 6 Pour gently and enjoy! 7 PORTAFILTER Remove Used Grinds. Rinse Filter It is normal that grinds are wet. Knock gently. HEATING Place Filter into Portafilter Insert and Lock empty Remove Frothing Portafilter into Brew Attachment Head and flush with water Insert & Lock Portafilter into Brew Head. Turn dial to 'ESPRESSO EXTRACTION' = 1oz Extract 2oz into 2 Cups for 2 x 1oz single shots Place Jug under wand. Turn dial to 'STEAM' Ensure Steam Wand Steaming will start is submerged after approx. 30 secs 3 POWER DOUBLE SHOT FILTER Extract 1oz into 1 Cup for 1 x 1oz single shot 2 4 Turn dial to 'STANDBY' once Cup is full. Discard water. ½ Jug Install Frothing Attachment F 6 HEATING 1/8" Use Coffee Scoop (provided) to fill Filter with ground coffee: Single Shot Filter (makes 1oz espresso) - 1 flat scoop Double Shot Filter (makes 2oz espresso) - 2 flat scoops Frothing Milk POWER 3 Correct Amounts 1 5 PORTAFILTER Place Filter into Portafilter OR Remove preheated Portafilter and dry thoroughly E FILTER 2 SINGLE SHOT FILTER Espresso will flow into your Cup 4 SINGLE SHOT HEATING Making Espresso 7 Replace Water Tank and push down firmly Run steam to clear Wipe Clean milk from Steam Wand 2oz DOUBLE SHOT Trouble Shooting G 1 2 3 No Steam? • Water Tank may be empty • Steam Wand Tip may be blocked H Fill Water Tank, then re-try Clean Steam Wand hole with Cleaning Tool (provided), then re-try 1 Remove the Steam Wand Tip with the Cleaning Tool (provided) and soak in hot water, then re-try. 2 4 3 POWER HEATING No Espresso Flow? • Water Tank may be empty Fill Water Tank, then • Ground Coffee may re-try be too fine • Filter may be blocked I Espresso too weak? Try a Double Shot 1 Check the grind size, then re-try. JUST RIGHT - feels like table salt TOO FINE - feels like flour TOO COARSE - feels like sugar = DOUBLE SHOT FILTER Extract 2oz into 1 Cup for 1 x 2oz double shot 2oz DOUBLE SHOT J Insert and Lock empty Clean Filter holes Portafilter into Brew with Cleaning Tool (provided), then re-try Head and flush with water, then re-try 1 POWER HEATING 2 POWER Not Hot Enough? • Preheat Cups and Portafilter • Heat milk longer • Wait till heat cycle is complete K 3 HEATING Insert and Lock empty Heat milk until outside Ensure 'HEATING' light of Jug is JUST too hot has gone out, then Portafilter into Brew Head, flush with water, to touch, then re-try re-try then re-try 1 HEL Any Questions? • Call 1866-273-8455 P! Refer to the Instruction Book or contact Breville Customer Service on [email protected] Extraction Guide Correct Extraction Under Extraction Over Extraction REMEDY 1 - Adjust & re-try REMEDY 1 - Adjust & re-try SELECT A FINER GRIND SELECT A COARSER GRIND REMEDY 2 - Adjust & re-try REMEDY 2 - Adjust & re-try USE MORE GROUND COFFEE USE LESS GROUND COFFEE REMEDY 3 - Adjust & re-try • Crema* is golden with a fine mousse texture • Crema is thin and pale • Espresso is dark brown • Tastes bitter or weak/watery * Crema is the caramel colored layer that floats on top of the espresso after extraction. • Espresso is pale brown INCREASE TAMP PRESSURE 1/8" REMEDY 3 - Adjust & re-try • Flow drips or not at all • Crema is dark and spotty • Espresso is very dark brown DECREASE TAMP PRESSURE 1/8" • Tastes bitter and burnt Always tamp to 1/8" below filter rim. Always tamp to 1/8" below filter rim.
