Must For October Only Oxygen sensors can be diagnosed with live data or directly at the component with an oscilloscope. It is important to get the scope hookup right as the ground side of the signal is 20-50mv above ground to eliminate noise on the ground line. You must ALWAYS connect the scope ground to the sensor ground wire not chassis earth. This test is done at light throttle (1500 rpm) and should oscillate from about 300-700mv with an average of 500mv (lambda 1) with roughly 1 oscillation per sec. If they are slow then they require replacement as they are partially polluted. Air Fuel Ratio sensors which occur on about year 2000 vehicles on can only be diagnosed by live data with the scan tool, there is no meaningful component test. If you have a rich or lean problem don`t forget to check fuel trim data before condeming the sensor. Any sensor that logs a heater element code should be replaced. These are critical components in the fuel system and should only be replaced with OEM or "better" quality products - like the Walker range.
