How To Add The Engine OII
This Edger was shippedwith a 20 ounce
containerof SAE30 motoroil.Addthis oilto
the engine beforeoperating.Tofill the crankcase, removethe oilfill cap/dipstickand add
the SAE30 motoroil. DO NOT OVERFILL,
1. Put the Edger on a levelsurface.
2. Removethe oilfillcap (Figure5).
3. Slowlyfillthe enginecrankcase.DO NOT
OVERFILL.

How To Fill With Gasoline
Make sure thatthe gasolinecontaineris
cleanandfree fromdust or other foreignmaterial.Never use gasolinethat couldbe stale

OII Recommendations
1. Removethe fuelcap.
Only use high quality detergent oil rated with
API service classification SG. Select the oil's
2. FIll the fuel tank with clean, fresh, unleaded grade automotive gasoline.
SAE viscosity grade according to your expected operating temperature. Although multi-viscasity oils (5W30, 10W30, etc.) improve
starting in cold weather, these multi-viscosity

when used above 32 degrees. Check the
engine oil level more frequently to avoid possible engine damage from running the engine low on oil,

HOW TO STOP
THE EDGER
1. Move the clutch lever backto the DISENGAGED position.Then, move the
throttle control to the STOP position.
See Figure7.

WARNING: Never leave the
EDGER unattended while the
engine Is running. Always dieengage the cutting blade and stop the
engine.

1.
Dudng normal use, run the engine at full
speed.
2.
Move the throttle control up to increase
engine speed, or down to decrease engine speed (see Rgure 7).

When startinga coldengine, pushthe primer button five times (see Figure8). Walt

1. Startthe engine.
2.
Toengage the cuttingblade,move the
clutch lever forward (see Figure9).
3.
Select the edging depth you need. There
are five selections down to approximately 2-3/4 inches deep.
NOTE: For deep edging, first cut at shallow
depths. Then, cot at greater depths until
the desired depth is obtained.

HOW TO USE THE INDEX LEVER
1. Stopthe engineand disconnectthe
sparkplugwire fromthe sparkplug.
2.
Loosen the front wheel knob shown in
Figure 10. Slide the front wheal all the
way to the right side.
3.
Securely Ughten the front wheal knob.
NOTE: To prevent the blade from hitting the wheel while trimming, make
sure the front wheal is set in the extreme right position.
4.
Disengagethe index lever (see
Figure 11). Movethe Index lever to the
notchmarked90° .
5. Reconnectthe sparkplugwire to the
sparkplug.
6.
Start the engine.

Move the clutch lever to the desired trimming height.

WARNING: While the engine is
running, never leave the Edger.
Before you adjust the wheels or
change the blade position, always disengage the cutting blade end stop the
engine.

HOW TO USE THE CURB-HOPPING
FEATURE
Because the front wheel and the dght rear
wheel are adjustable, the Edger can be used
cn uneven surfasas, such as the curb shown
in Figure 12. Set the wheel positions as follows.

HOW TO STOP THE ENGINE
To stop the engine, move the clutch lever all
the way back to the DISENGAGED poeition.
Then, push the throffie control lever down to
the STOP position.
If the engine will notstop, hold a screwdriver
againstthe sparkplugand againstthe engine
coolingfins.The sparkwill go to groundand
the enginewill stop.
HOW TO START THE ENGINE
NOTE: Do not usathe primer button to start
a warm engine.
IMPORTANT: Before you start the engine,
operate the controls several times. Make
sure all controls move freely.
7. TO start engine, hold the recoil starter
handle firmly with your right hand.
1. Check the oil.
8. Hold the edger handlefirmlywith your left
hand.
2. Fillthe fueltankwith mgulm unleaded
gasoline,Make sure the gasolineis
clean. Leaded gasolinewillincreasedepositsand shortenthe life of the valves.

NOT allow the starterrope to snap back.
Letthe starterropeslowlyrewind.If anginsfails to startafterthree pulls,push
primerbuttontwo timesand again pull

10.Whan the engine starts, move the throttle
control lever up (FAST p<_ition) to increase speed or down to decrease
speed. During normal usa keep the

• Edging is best performed when cor_liUo_s
are dry. If the soil is to wet, dirt becomes
packed around the blade causing premature belt wear and decreased partormancs.
• If dirt does become packed around the
blade, stop the engine and remove the
wire from the spark plug. Remove the
packed dirt and debris from the blade.
• For deap edging, firstcut at shallow
depths.Then, cut at greaterdepthsuntil
the desireddepth is obtained.
• For uniformedging, makesure the blade
guideddeson the surface.

LUBRICATION
Aftereach 25 hours,apply a smallamountof

How To Change The Engine OII
Change the oilin the enginecrankcaseafter
each 25 hoursof use.
NOTE: The oil will drain more freely when
the engine Is warm.
1. Disconnectthe sparkplugwire fromthe
sparkplug.
2. Remove the oil drain plug (see
Figure 14). Drainthe oilintoa fiat pan.
3. Afterdrainingall the oil,installand tightan the oll dreln plug.
4.
Removethe oll fill cap (see Figure15).

2.
Turn the cover to the left (counterclockwise). Remove the cover and the air filter from the flange, (see Figure 16).
3.
Discardthe sir filter.
4.
Clean the cover andthe flange.
5.
Installa new air filter intothe cover,

Pushthe cover firmlyagainstthe
flange. Tum the cover to the right
(clockwise)untiltight.Make sure the retelnere are lockedaroundthe flange.

pitted, bumed,or if the pomelainis cracked.

HOW TO REMOVE
AND ADJUSTMENT
THE BELT
The beltmade of a specialcompound.If the
beltbecomeswom or breaks,replace the
beltwith an odglnalequipmentbelt.
4. Loosen,do notremove,the ecrewthat
holdsthe belt guide. Then, movethe
belt guide away fromthe belt.
1. Disconnectthe sparkplugwire fromthe
sparkplug.

Removethe two screws fromthe belt
guard (see Figure19).
Pull the clutch lever back to release the
tension from the belt.

Remove the two ecrews end spa(ere
fromthe top of the engine pulley cover.
Removethe engine pulley cover (see
Figure18).
Removethe old belt fi'omthe engine
andquillassemblypulleys.Replacewith
an odglnalequipment belt.
7. Toinstalla new belt, reversethe above
steps.

is in storage for 30 days or more, follow the
steps below:

Let the engine run until it is out of gasoline.
When the Edger is put in storage for thirty
days or more, follow the steps below to
make sure the Edger is in good condition the
following season.
If youdo not wantto removethe gasoline. adda fuelstabilizerto any gasoline
left in the fueltank. A fuel stabilizerwill
minimizegum depositsandacids. If the
fueltank is almostempty,mix the fuel
stabilizerwithfresh gasolinein a separate containerand addthe mixtureto the
fuel tank. Alwaysfollowthe instructions
on the stabilizercontainer.Startthe angins. Letthe enginerunfor 10 minutes
to allow the mixtureto roachthe carburotor.

pads. Tightenall loose hardware.
Applya smallamountof engineoilto all
movingpads, psrticulady the wheels.
Putthe Edgerin a buildingthat has good
vanttiation.
Change the engine oil. See "How To
Change The Engine Oil" in the Maintenance section.
Cover the Edgerwitha suitableprotective coverthatdoes not retainmoisture.
Do not use plastic.
Lubdcatathe piston/cylindarares. This
can bedone byfirstremovingthe spark
plug andsquirtings smallamountof
clean engineoilintothe sparkplug hole.
Then, coverthe sparkplug holewitha
ragto absorboilspray.Next, rotatathe
engineby pullingthe startertwo or throe
Umes. Finally,installthe sparkplugand
attachthe sparkplugwire.
IMPORTANT: Never cover the Edgar while
the engine and exhaust areas are still
warm.
NOTE: A yearly checkup or tune-up by a
Sears Service Center is a good way to
make sure that your Edger will _ovldo
maximum performance for the next season.
Storethe Edgerin the operatingposition
withthe wheelsdown. If the Edgeris
storedin any other position,oilfrom the
crankcasewillenterthe cylinderand
cause a sentise problem.
