A C C E S S
T E C H N O L O G Y
ATI and Madentec Limited have teamed up to
provide a powerful and flexible solution for
Mercury II and MiniMerc switch users. You can
now access the Windows desktop and any
application, as well as move from application
to application.
Head-Pointing Systems
These products allow you to use head movement to move the cursor on the screen and generate mouseclicks. A camera sits on top of the device and tracks a tiny reflective dot worn on your forehead or glasses
using wireless, infrared technology. As you move your head, the system converts the motions into computer
mouse movement. These systems are compatible with both Mercury and MiniMerc devices.

USB
All you need is a switch and Discover:Switch
software (v1.76 or higher). Just plug any .switch
directly into the Mercury II or MiniMerc switch
port and use it with this software.
Pre-made setups for the Desktop and all Mercury
applications, such as WinDVD and Internet
Explorer, load automatically. You can also attach
additional pre-made setups to other applications.
(Requires Version 2.3 of the Mercury Control
Panel for existing customers. Call ATI for

Rigid Mount
MOUNTS
These mounting systems from Daedalus
Technologies, Inc. (DaeSSY) and CJT Enterprises
can be used with all ATI devices and mounted on
most conventional power and manual wheelchairs.
Mounting systems require a mounting plate,
which is included with some ATI devices (see
the Mounting Plate section at the right for
details). Choose the appropriate mount based
on the abilities of the user, type of AAC device,
and type of wheelchair being used.
DaeSSY Mounts
These mounts from DaeSSY (some shown above)
store devices in different ways when not being used.
3 Rigid Mount—device and mount must
be removed for the user to access the
wheelchair.
3 Folding Mount—device may be folded
down beside the wheelchair. The 1" side
mount ROP (Removable Outer Piece) version
can support equipment that is heavy enough
to tip an unoccupied wheelchair when the
attached device is outside the wheelbase.
Detach the device or remove the mount
before the wheelchair is vacated.
3 Swing Away Mount—device may be swung
away from the user like a gate, allowing
easy access in and out of the wheelchair
(not recommended for wheelchairs with a
tilting seat system).
3 Rear Mount—the device is folded away
behind the backrest of the wheelchair when
not needed.
3 Lockable Rear Folding Mount—similar to the
Rear Mount, with the added feature of a
lock mechanism to hold the mount in place
while in use.
Folding Mount
Swing Away Mount
ATI devices can be mounted to wheelchairs with
round or square/rectangular tubing. For round tubing, specify the tubing size (diameter) of the
wheelchair. Most round tubing sizes are 1", 7/8"
or 3/4". Also specify the vertical and horizontal
tube lengths. Standard tube lengths for DaeSSY
mounts are 16" (horizontal) and 22" (vertical,
either S-bent for Rigid and Folding Mounts or
right angle for Swing Away Mounts).
Desk Mounts
Other tubing lengths are available upon request.
Contact ATI Customer Service for more information. Device users and family members should
consult a therapist for guidance.
The Clamp Desk Mount, a variation on the
standard Desk Mount, uses a Manfrotto Super
Clamp to clamp onto the edge of the table.
Similar to the standard Desk Mount, the U-Tube
can be adjusted for angle and position.
Desk Mounts, from DaeSSY, are most commonly
used in conjunction with one of the DaeSSY
wheelchair mounts and allow a device to be
positioned on a desk or table at precisely the
same orientation as it is on the wheelchair. The
Desk Mount consists of a base and U-shaped
tube that holds the attachment fitting for the
device on its adapter.
CJT Mounts
With CJT’s Profiler Mount, the device’s mounting
plate attaches to a ball that allows a multitude of
angles. The adjustable tube length works well for
child or adult wheelchairs. The push/pull pin
quickly releases the tubing from the base clamp.
Choose round or square/rectangular tubing.
Profiler Mounts are easy to use, hold up to 15
pounds, install in minutes, are light-weight yet
durable, and can mount on either the left or
right side.
Switch Mounts
Switch Mounts allow you to fasten a switch
securely to a wheelchair. The DaeSSY Switch
Mount Kit and the Slim Armstrong Switch Mount
from AbleNet give you parts to configure a suitable system for a user’s needs. The Universal
Switch Mounts from AbleNet, with either a lever
or knob to lock the joints in place, attaches a
switch to a wheelchair or anywhere else. They
extend to 20.5" and hold up to 5 pounds.

Mounting Plates
Mercury and MiniMerc devices come with a
mounting plate. Mercury SGD, MiniMerc SGD,
L*E*O, LinkPLUS and LinkCLASSIC devices require
the purchase of a mounting plate (see right for
pricing). For Mercury devices, mounting plates
are available with and without the table-top stand.

Stage One:
Cause and Effect
The Stage One learner begins to understand that an input device controls the
computer. The assessment activities show the learner’s ability to use the
access device to make things happen on the screen.
Assessing Stage One Skills
Start with “Press and Hold” activities to determine whether the learner understands cause and effect. Then move to “Press and Release” activities so the
learner can show intentional control over the device. With activities ranging
from trains and rainbows to bumper ball, bowling and the antics of a chimp,
there are sure to be many activities that will motivate your learner.
Accessible activities help you identify your learners’ skills.
Stage One assessment activities include:

Stage Three:
Language Readiness
Emerging Language
The Stage Two learner begins to understand that objects have names and
that actions have words to express them. The learner is not asked to identify
objects, but simply to absorb information.
The Stage Three learner shows an understanding of everyday language. This is the
first Stage in which the learner responds to a question based on a prompt.
Assessing Stage Three Skills
The Stage Three assessment activities ask the learner to select a specified
object from a choice of 2 or 3 targets, presented on both plain backgrounds
and in contextual scenes. The learner has three chances to select the correct
answer. Incorrect responses are handled using a systematic model that
guides the learner to the correct answer through teaching.
Stage Two assessment activities include:
3 choice of Nouns, Verbs, or Attributes
Stage Three assessment activities include:

Stage Seven:
Functional Learning
Written Expression
The Stage Six learner is ready to explore the world around him and begins to
connect academic and social skills to become more independent.
The Stage Seven learner works toward mastery of writing skills, moving from
letter and sound association to full independent composition.
Assessing Stage Six Skills
The assessment activities use stories and scenes of real people and their
activities. Each story connects to five life skills. The connection between the
stories and the questions relating to them make for a meaningful evaluation.
Assessing Stage Seven Skills
In Stage Seven assessment activities, the learner builds words, sentences,
and stories. With Stages’ text-to-speech capability, learners can hear what
they have typed immediately. The accessible on-screen keyboard allows all
learners to write.
Stage Six assessment activities include:
