Positioning the Edger Handles 1. Removeand discardanypackagingcardboardthat may be presentbetweenthe upper handleand the lowerhandle. 2. Depressthe bladecontrolat thetop of the upper handleand pivot the upperhandleupwarduntil it snapsinto place. 3. Tightenthe handknobs,whichare locatedon boththe left and rightsides of the handle.See Figure2. Wing Knob RopeGuide Figure 1 Attaching the Starter Rope HandKnobs UpperHandle 1. Standbehindthe unitand holdthe blade control WARNING The edger blade WILL rotate when the starter rope is pulled. againstthe upperhandleand gently pull the starter rope outof the engine. WARNING: The edger blade WILL rotatewhen the starter ropeis pulled. NOTE: The starterropewill not pull out of the engineunlessthe bladecontrol (referto Figure1) is depressedagainstthe upperhandle. LowerHandle iMPORTANT: 1. Slip the starterropethroughthetop of the ropeguide. 2. Retightenthe wing knobwhichsecuresthe ropeguide to the upperhandle. Starter Rope / Recoil Starter The pull rope/recoilstarteris usedto startthe engine. Primer The primeris usedto pumpgas into thecarburetorand aid in startingtheengine.Use it to start a coldengine, but do not useit to restarta warmengineafter a short shutdown. Be familiar with all controls and their proper operation. Know how to stop the machine and disengage them quickly. NOTE: Referto the Engine Manual packed with your edger for a detailed description of all engine-related controls and components. Curb Height Adjustment Lever (if so equipped) The curbheightadjustmentlever,if so equipped,is foundon the rear portionof the edger.Whenplacedin an applicablenotch,it aidsin stabilizingthe edger while edginggrass alonga curb. See Figure3. NOTE: Refer to theEngineManualpacked withyour edger fora detaileddescriptionofall engine-related controlsand components. IMPORTANT: Becomefamiliarwith all the controls Blade Control beforeoperatingtheedger. IMPORTANT: Become familiar with all the controls before operating the edger. Locatedon the upperhandle,the bladecontrolmustbe depressedagainstthe upperhandlein orderto operate the unit. Releasingthe bladecontrolstopsthe engine and the edgerblade. Edging Tobegin edging,proceedas follows: 1. Movethe unit overto thearea to be edged,making surethat the left rearwheelis on a hard surfaceand the bladeis overthe area to be cut. See Figure4. WARNING: Do not lowerblade if blade is over concrete,asphalt,rocksor the like.The blade can strikethe supportingsurface,resulting in personal injuryor propertydamage. Thenmakea pass alongthe areato be edged beforeproceedingto the next notch. Thefurther forwardthe bladedepthcontrolleveris moved,the deeperor lowerthe bladewill cut intothe ground. Severalpassesmay be necessaryto obtain the desireddepthof cut. Donot lowertheblade more thanone depth notchat a time withoutmakinga pass. 3. For best results,proceedslowlyalong the pathbeing edged,slowlymovingthe edgerback and forth through the cuttingarea, againmakingsureto keepthe left rear wheelon the hard surfaceand the blade inthe cuttingpath,close to but not touchingthe edge of the hard surface. 4. Onceyou havereachedthe end of your cuttingpath, raisethe bladecontrol leverbackintothe START position,moveto the next area to be cut, and proceed againfrom step 1. 3. Allowthe starterhandleto slowlyreturnto the rope guide. NOTE: Seeyour enginemanualpackedwithyour unit for moredetailedinstructions. NOTE: If the enginefails to startafter threepulls, depresstheprimeran additionaltwo timesbefore pulling thestarterrope again. 8 EdgingAlongA Curb NOTE: Edgerfeaturesvary bymodel. All edgermodels do NOTcome equippedto edge along a curbnor is there a curb wheelkit availableto modifyyour edger if it was notpurchasedequippedto do so. Pivottheright, rearwheelintoan applicablepositionin relationto the heightof thecurbto be edgedalong. 3. Releasethe curb heightadjustmentleverto lock the wheelin position.See Figure6. 4. Also if thewheels are removedfor any reason,lubricatethe surfaceof the axle boltand the inner surfaceof the wheelwith lightoil. °voes'; e 0oo,, Figure 10 i 2. With yourotherhand,carefullyreachunder the rearof the unit and removethe belt fromaroundthe engine flywheelpulley. 3. Removethe spindlesheavesbelt guardby removing the two self-tappingscrewswhich secureit to the bladeplateassembly. 4. Usetwo wrenches(one wrenchto preventthehex bolthead fromspinningand the otherto removethe flangenut) to removethe edger blade. Referto Figure11. Pivot Points Lubricatethe pivot pointson the blade controlbail,blade depthcontrollever,and if applicable,the blade adjustment lever,and curb heightadjustmentleverwith lightoil at least oncea season. Bearing Block Lubricatethe bearingblock oncea season,or as needed by simplyapplyingoil at eachend of thecover plate. See Figure9. Hex Bolt Head Flange Nut Figure 11 5.
