Together they always sound a chord of driving pleasure in its purest form. And in continuation of this tradition we are proud to present the BMW Z . Classic roadster characteristics – the long bonnet, short overhangs and deep, way-back seat – in a modern idiom create a look that is as familiar as it is unique. A look that is complemented to perfection by the retractable hardtop. Whether open or closed, this folding roof maintains the low-slung lines typical of a roadster. The sculptured bonnet is dominated by two powerful contours radiating from the BMW emblem. The fi nely shaped dual round headlights with Xenon technology for high and low beam draw the eye whether off or on, while the four striking illuminated rings of the daytime running lights make the roadster unmistakable even in the dark. Our engineers set out to create a fusion of classical and innovative elements: powerful, smooth-running engines, together with the set-back seating position and the rear-wheel drive for a sensation of intense dynamism at the wheel. They’re design concepts that are hard to beat, as anyone who has ever driven a BMW roadster can confirm. But our engineers have retained something else as well: their passion for developing new and pioneering technologies. This passion has produced, for example, the seven-speed sport automatic transmission with double clutch that comes as standard with the BMW Z sDrive is (optional for the Z sDrive i). It shifts gears lightning-fast, imperceptibly and particularly efficiently – automatically, or manually using the paddles on the leather steering wheel. Or the Driving Experience Control: at one touch, you can adjust the ride to suit your mood, from emphatically sporty to softly cushioned. Every element here is tightly focused on the driver, all instruments are clearly structured – there’s no forgetting that you’re in a BMW roadster. The four round air-conditioning controls (shown here with optional automatic air conditioning) are a fi ne example of an interior where every detail is imbued with style. Pleasant to the touch, their form alludes to the proud history of the BMW Roadster. And with the optionally available latest generation iDrive control system you can operate numerous on-board systems entirely intuitively, with nothing to distract you from the thrill of the BMW Z . Interior 20 | 21 The high-quality materials in the interior of the BMW Z Roadster are produced with loving attention to detail, creating an atmosphere of exclusivity. The optional Design Pure Balance, shown here, is particularly breathtaking. With the Fineline Anthracite fi ne-wood trim and extended leather fi ttings in exclusive Merino Cohiba Brown leather, it exudes sophisticated modernity. Even the instrument panel and the door shoulders are luxuriously upholstered in Cohiba Brown leather, whose high quality is evinced by fi ne double seams with contrast stitching. The leather upholstery on the sport seats for driver and front passenger features innovative SunRefl ective Technology for even more comfortable open-top driving. BMW was one of the fi rst manufacturers to pursue the goal of effi cient drive technologies, as part of its multi-award-winning sustainability strategy. BMW Effi cientDynamics, included as standard, is a comprehensive technology package designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions – while simultaneously enhancing dynamic performance. A winner of many technology awards, it has enabled the BMW Group to reduce the CO emissions of its European new-vehicle fl eet by about % since . Currently models produce less than g of CO per kilometre. The BMW Group intends to achieve a further % reduction in CO emissions by . Electric Power Steering. Unlike conventional hydraulic steering systems, the electrical steering only uses energy during actual steering. When the steering wheel position is constant – for example at high speed along the motorway – the electric motor is inactive. Under the umbrella of the BMW Effi cientDynamics project, BMW is continuously developing innovative systems that will bring us closer to the long-term goal of emission-free mobility. BMW delivers the most advanced and dynamic hybrid driving experience thanks to the intellligent combination of an electric motor and a combustion engine. The range includes the new BMW ActiveHybrid , the BMW ActiveHybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid . All combine high effi ciency with superior dynamics. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. BMW TwinPower Turbo combines the latest injection technologies for enhanced effi ciency with fully variable power distribution featuring innovative turbocharging technology for a more dynamic ride. BMW ActiveE. Since , there has been a new type of dynamism on the road: the BMW ActiveE. Powered by electricity alone, it is manufactured in a small production run, as part of a pilot project. In this way, BMW is preparing the way for the emission-free mobility of tomorrow. The promise: % emissions, % driving pleasure. Auto Start/Stop function. The BMW Z sDrive i and Z sDrive i models with six-speed manual transmission are equipped with the Auto Start/Stop function. The Auto Start/Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (e.g. at traffi c lights) to further reduce overall fuel consumption. A signal (Start/Stop) in the display indicates that the function is active. BMW Hydrogen. Since the s, BMW has had a pioneering role in developing hydrogen as a long-term possibility for emissions-free mobility. The BMW Hydrogen , a luxury saloon with a hydrogen-powered combustion engine, was presented in . BMW i. In line with the guiding principles of BMW Effi cientDynamics, the BMW i brand is developing visionary new vehicle concepts for electric mobility such as the BMW i (Megacity Vehicle) and the BMW i . While including existing BMW Effi cientDynamics technologies, these vehicles also use innovations in intelligent lightweight construction such as carbon. With a focus on sustainability through the entire value chain and a range of additional mobility services, BMW is progressively redefi ning the concept of individual mobility. Optimum Shift Indicator. Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction with six-speed manual transmission comes in. It shows the driver which gear to use in order to save fuel. Status / . Due to become available from / . CO emissions generated through the production and delivery of fuel or other energy sources were not accounted for in determining CO emissions figures. Brake Energy Regeneration. To supply the battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is driven using engine power on an ongoing basis, which requires additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver brakes or takes their foot off the accelerator – previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. Thus electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance. While the car is in motion, the tyres are constantly changing shape, using up energy and fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, which reduces deformation. Lightweight construction. Our engineers use aluminium where lighter materials are more expedient, for instance in the front section and for the suspension, in the bonnet and the hardtop. For example, the engines are made of aluminium, making them the lightest in their class. These weight savings can lead to lower fuel consumption and better axle load distribution – for more agility, especially in bends. Some BMW EfficientDynamics features are dependent on the car’s equipment and are not available for all model variants. A stand-out athletic performance needs more than just pure power. Equally important for a dynamic and superior drive is the seamless transfer of power into acceleration. In the BMW Z , this is made possible by cutting-edge transmission technology. The models BMW Z sDrive i, Z sDrive i and Z sDrive i are fitted with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, which features short-throw gear shifts for particularly fast gear changes. The eight-speed sport automatic transmission, which combines outstanding efficiency with an extremely sporty driving experience, is available upon request for the BMW Z sDrive i and the BMW Z sDrive i. The BMW Z sDrive i can also be selected with the optional seven-speed sport automatic transmission with double clutch that comes as standard with the BMW Z sDrive is. So while one gear is being disengaged, the next is already in position. The gear shift takes mere milliseconds – roughly the blink of an eye – ensuring no loss of traction force. The permanent engine connection facilitates outstanding acceleration that will take your breath away. And the automatic mode quickly and precisely selects the most efficient gears to considerably lower fuel consumption. The barely perceptible gear changes markedly improve acceleration and passenger comfort. Of course you can also use the gearshift paddles on the sport leather steering wheel to manually control the eight-speed sport automatic transmission or the sport automatic transmission with double clutch. In the seven-speed sport automatic transmission with double clutch, even and uneven gears are distributed across two power trains. So while one gear is being disengaged, the next is already in position – meaning the fastest of shifts with a maximum of precision. Chassis 28 | 29 THE BMW Z : RULER OF ALL ROADS. SPORT COMFORT There are some roads that are naturally beautiful. But in the BMW Z Roadster, all kinds of road will become a joy to travel. The perfectly tuned chassis and suspension ensure excellent road contact and eliminate disturbances caused by rough or uneven surfaces. So you will always arrive relaxed at your destination – even after a long journey. Keen to exchange this comfortable touring car for a thrilling sports car? In the BMW Z Roadster, all it takes is the push of a button: the Driving Experience Control unifi es countless driving dynamics components and affects the entire ride – more noticeably and comprehensively than almost any other comparable system. After switching to the Sport mode with its more sensitive steering, taking bends is an even greater thrill. On straights you will notice how spontaneously the accelerator pedal reacts and with the optional automatic transmission you will be able to make even faster gear shifts to further increase the BMW Z ’s sporty handling. But that’s just the beginning. The Sport+ mode takes you to the edge of extreme athletic driving without compromising controllability and safety. This is achieved by a greater degree of slippage on the rear wheels – which can also be manually activated at any time via a separate “Traction” button. In addition, the Dynamic Stability Control can be completely deactivated at the touch of a button (DSC off). Here, an electronic limited slip differential enables powerful acceleration out of bends and hairpins. The result is breathtaking agility, which can be taken one step further still: the optionally available Adaptive M suspension (standard in the Z sDrive is) provides even more precise handling, as the driver can adjust the damper and the system automatically compensates for irregularities of the road surface. Hardtop 30 | 31 DON’T LET IT RAIN ON YOUR PARADE. Sunshine can turn to a storm in the blink of an eye. But you won’t be caught out – the BMW Z is ready for anything. Its fully retractable hardtop can react lightning-fast to changes in the weather. At speeds of up to km/h, it automatically closes in just seconds and opens again in just . Inside, a pleasant temperature is constantly maintained and noise from outside is audibly reduced. And as you would expect from BMW, the hardtop also has a positive effect on driving dynamics: made of lightweight aluminium, it helps keep the vehicle’s centre of gravity low. A host of reassuring safety features in the BMW Z allows you to enjoy your drive with total peace of mind. For instance, there are innovative lighting technologies to help you avoid collisions. Xenon Headlights and the optional Adaptive Headlights highlight obstacles in your path. And if you have to perform an emergency braking manoeuvre, the Dynamic Braking Lights provide the necessary warning to the vehicles behind. In conjunction with the optional Navigation system Professional, the BMW Z Roadster features the latest-generation iDrive. This combines the control of all entertainment and communication functions and sets benchmarks in operating comfort. The underlying principle of iDrive is the separation of the controls and the display, creating an ergonomic optimum: the controls are within easy reach on the centre console, while the Control Display is at optimal viewing height and distance next to the instrument panel. Should an accident occur, the high-rigidity passenger cell with its heavy-duty beam framework is key in guaranteeing passenger safety. With reinforced side-impact protection, particularly stable A-pillars and fi xed rollover bars, you can be sure of complete security even when the top is down. For improved pedestrian security, the active bonnet rises automatically in a collision. Should the car go into a roll, you can rely on the stable A-pillars and the rollover bars fi xed behind the headrests. But the BMW Z ’s safety features do not stop there – there is also a series of features to assist passengers in the crucial moments after an accident: with the BMW ConnectedDrive* option, the vehicle can automatically notify the relevant emergency services , and communicate both the position of the vehicle to the exact metre, and the approximate severity of the accident. Specially developed head and upper-body airbags cushion the head, ribcage and pelvis area in the event of a collision. The Controller has been designed according to state-of-the-art biomechanical principles. Its “tilt, rotate and push” operating logic follows principles used in computing, enabling users to operate it intuitively without requiring time to get used to it. The direct menu control buttons above the Controller can be used to directly control the four most frequently used main menu items – media, radio, telephone and navigation. In addition, you can use eight freely programmable functional bookmarks to store your choice of settings – from your preferred radio station or a particular CD track to the telephone numbers or navigation destinations you use most frequently. For even more convenience, iDrive also features optionally available voice recognition. With the Navigation system Professional, the functions and settings are shown on a high-resolution, . " monitor that ensures optimum readability and clarity. Menu items are arranged in graphically clear and standardised form. Visual operating aids, such as an image of the Controller or a display of all the current control options, make it even easier to find your way around. Convenience. BMW CONNECTED DRIVE – MORE CONVENIENCE, INFOTAINMENT AND SAFETY. Infotainment. Our world is becoming more closely connected every day. BMW drivers are used to the fact that their vehicle and their world are connected – that they can request information, communicate via telephone or email and always be up to date while they’re on the go. The BMW ConnectedDrive* option ensures that the driver and the vehicle remain in perfect touch with the rest of the world – at all times and in all places. A few highlights from the categories of convenience, infotainment and safety are displayed here. This system allows you to unlock, lock and start your BMW without inserting the key. All you need is the remote control in your pocket, which transmits an identifi cation signal to the car. Simply touch the door handle or boot lid and the BMW unlocks or locks as required. Similarly, a touch of the Start/Stop button is all it takes to start the engine. PlugIn. With your iPhone and the Apps option, you’ll always be up to date – and of course this applies equally when you use it inside your BMW. Through PlugIn, you have direct and easy access to all menu items, you can use advanced functions such as the playback of Genius mixes and display album covers. And whenever you add iPod updates to your iPhone, they can be used in your car immediately via BMW ConnectedDrive. Thanks to this interface technology, the use of mobile devices in cars is innovative, more convenient and safer. BMW Connected App. For the fi rst time, you can now use apps in your BMW. With the Apps option, an iPhone and the free BMW Connected App from the Apple App Store, you’re no longer limited to just listening to local radio, your calendar is with you all the time and you’re always in contact with your friends. Using iDrive, you can easily select web radio stations from around the world. You can also call up the latest status reports from your Facebook or Twitter accounts and view upcoming appointments on the Control Display, or even have them read to you through the audio system’s speakers. New features include RSS feeds for news and Wiki Local, which allows you to source Wikipedia information on your local area. Bluetooth interface with extended functions (Offi ce). Use the time you spend on the road even more effectively. Thanks to the optional mobile phone preparation Business with Bluetooth interface in conjunction with a navigation system and the intelligent integration of selected business mobile phones, you can use the Bluetooth connection to show Offi ce functions such as email, dates, tasks, contacts and SMS messages on the Control Display while on the move. You can even have them read to you via the audio speakers using the text-to-speech function. With Bluetooth Audio Streaming, you can also enjoy wireless playback of music via selected Bluetooth-enabled devices . Safety. Revolutionising mobile networking. The BMW Vision ConnectedDrive is a visionary roadster with a design that exhilarates from the very fi rst glance. Its dynamic, fl owing contours lead the eye from the striking front and along the stretched bonnet of this extraordinary vehicle – a synthesis of exterior and interior. Each of the three levels of the interior stands for one of three BMW ConnectedDrive components – convenience, infotainment and safety. The accompanying functions and controls are illuminated in different colours, which literally radiate a pulsating array of information. More information about this concept vehicle and further research projects is available in the new Future Lab. High-Beam Assistant. The optional High-Beam Assistant detects sources of light in the vehicle’s vicinity and switches between high and low beam according to the traffi c situation. When the system is active, an image sensor behind the interior mirror monitors traffi c and light conditions. Based on these sensor images, the assistant function decides whether or not the high beam should be switched on. The front passenger airbag is equipped with a seat occupancy detector. The side airbag (head/upper body) signifi cantly reduces the risk of injury to the head, ribcage and pelvis area in the event of a side-on collision. Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution feature moving headlights that optimise road illumination in bends. This enhances safety when driving at night or in bad visibility. Sensors register the steering angle, yaw rate and vehicle speed, and the direction of the headlight beams is automatically adjusted to match the calculated layout of the bend. Side impact protection with strengthened door cross members around the seat and backrest areas and a seat structure specially designed for an impact all increase protection for the occupants. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) incl. CBC, Brake Assistant and additional functions. DSC detects any risk of skidding early on and stabilises the car in milliseconds. Traction Mode (DTC) permits increased wheel slip, in order to maximise propulsion in specifi c situations and enable a sportier driving style. In DSC-off mode, an electronic limited slip differential improves driving characteristics. Rollover protection system comprises two steel rollover bars behind the headrests, together with a high-tensile chassis cross member. The system also includes a rollover bar of tubular steel integrated into the windscreen cowl and A-pillars. Bumpers with reversible aluminium impact absorbers and replaceable deformation elements at the front and rear absorb impacts of up to km/h without damage to the body; energy-absorbing foam in the bumpers at the front absorbs impacts of up to km/h without damage. Runflat tyres: the reinforced walls mean that the tyres do not immediately defl ate when air pressure is reduced, and do not loosen from the rims. The runflat indicator comes as standard and minimises the danger resulting from a tyre defect. An indicator light on the dashboard warns the driver of any slight drop in pressure; an acoustic signal warns of a dramatic drop in pressure. 58 | 59 Cornering Brake Control (CBC) increases vehicle stability when braking gently in a fast bend. During braking manoeuvres, the load on the rear wheels is reduced, which can lead to oversteering ( ). In brake manoeuvres that are outside the ABS control range, CBC addresses this tendency using asymmetric brake pressure control ( ) in order to create a stabilising counterforce ( ). Crash sensor overrides the central lock function in the event of an accident (the doors can then be opened), the interior lights and warning blinkers are switched on, and the safety battery terminal clamp is activated.
