When the Miele company was first ­started
back in 1899, the founders, ­believing
that success was only achie­vable in the
long term by being totally convinced of
the quality of one’s product, elected to
produce machines that were both durable
and long lasting.
Their motto “Immer besser”, which
­translates as “Forever better”, represents
this philosophy. It remains our company
motto to this day and permeates through
every aspect of our ­business, from the
drawing board down to the very last nut
and bolt in a machine. And it is thanks
to this philosophy that the Miele brand is
now identified with unsurpassed product
quality, world­wide.
Founded by Carl Miele and Reinhard
Zinkann in 1899 with only 11 employees,
Miele quickly gained recognition as a
­manufacturer of premium appliances.
Our Cape Town showroom opened at the
end of September 2005. The Brooklyn
Pretoria showroom opened in August 2008
and the Durban showroom opened in
October 2009.
To help meet demand there are
­subsidiaries in more than 30 countries
making Miele the largest privately held
­appliance manufacturer in the world.
Our showroom trading hours are from
Mondays to Fridays from 9.00 am to
5.30 pm and on Saturdays from 9.00 am
to 1.00 pm. On Public Holidays and Sundays
we are closed. If possible, please arrange
an appointment for quality customer care in
advance.

Miele appliances have longer lives
Our philosophy is to make appliances
that will last way into the future. So we
have a vested interest in ensuring that
there is a future for them to be around
in. The longevity of Miele appliances in
itself is a major contribution to the idea of
conserving resources and economising
on raw ­materials. The equation is a
simple one: the longer the operating life
of a machine, the less likely the need for
new materials and the energy required in
producing a r­ eplacement.
DIN EN ISO 14001 certification provides
third-party validation that the Miele
­(environmental) management system is in
compliance with the requirements of the
DIN EN 14001.
Energy labelling
Refrigerators and freezers account for a
fifth of our household energy consumption.
When purchasing a new appliance, it
­always pays to opt for an energy saving
model.
A commitment to our future
The long life of Miele appliances is
­legendary and so too is our commitment
to making sure that we take care of
our environment. Our Research and
Development teams are continually
striving to improve the performance of our
appliances at the same time as conserving
resources and economising on the raw
materials used.
Reducing packaging
When it comes to packaging, our motto
is “as much as necessary, but as little
as possible”. Naturally we make it as
environmentally friendly as we can, and all
our packaging is recyclable.
Committed to the environment
Miele has put in place a comprehensive
management system covering
occupational safety, health issues, medical
products, quality, social responsibility and
environmental protection.
CFC and HFC free
The insulation material and coolants used
in Miele’s refrigeration products were
converted to CFC free and HFC free
materials long before EU guidelines on
banning CFCs and HFCs came into force.
The harmful substances previously
used in the insulation material have been
replaced with pentane and the coolant
used now is isobutane R600a. This is an
environmentally friendly natural gas which
does not damage the ozone layer or
increase the greenhouse effect.
Thanks to the energy labels, you can ­easily
judge how energy efficient each model is.
Currently every product is ­rated from A++
(low electricity consumption) to G (high
electricity consumption). All manufacturers
label their appliances in this way, so you
can see at a glance, which are the most
­efficient models and make your decision
with economy in mind.
All Miele’s refrigeration appliances have an
Energy efficiency rating of between A++
and B.
An A+ rating offers a saving of 25% over a
current A rated appliance.

refrigerator or freezer. Miele refrigeration
utilises the latest technology to ensure that
not only is the internal environment created
as efficiently as possible, but that it is also
maintained, thus e

Sophisticated electronics on many
­models ensure the optimum performance
is achieved and the temperature of the
appliance is maintained to the exact
degree. For an even higher level of
performance, particularly for chilling food
and controlling humidity, Miele offers

CoolTouch controls
A variety of control functions
are available depending on the
model selected. For full details

Many of the models in the range feature
fully electronic controls that provide
highly accurate temperature monitoring
and alarm functions. LED indicators or
temperature displays ensure temperature
selection is precise and the system
ensures the desired temperature is quickly
reached.
The Super cool and Super freeze functions
will, at the touch of a button, automatically
reduce the interior temperature to ensure
that the temperature of fresh produce is
reduced as quickly as possible, retaining the
consistency and texture of the food.
Acoustic and visual alarms are
incorporated within the electronics
to inform the user should the internal
temperature rise above the desired level.
For added peace of mind a warning tone
also sounds if the door is left open for
longer than 60 seconds.

Interior design
Easy cleaning and adjustability are just
two of the factors to be considered when
purchasing a new refrigeration ­appliance.
All Miele appliances feature ­shelves
manufactured from safety glass. The
shelves can hold up to 25 kg and are
trimmed in white or chrome edging and our
new models have stainless steel edging
too, depending on the model. All are easily
­removed for cleaning purposes.
Glass shelving provides spill protection
and has the additional benefit of helping
maintain the interior temperature.
A selected number of shelves in all Miele
appliances are adjustable, enabling you to
make the best use of the space available.
The majority of models also feature split
shelves for added convenience.
Interior doors
The Miele interior door shelving is made
from high quality frosted or clear plastic
with chrome framing and our new models
have stainless steel edging too. All are
height-adjustable and are easily removed
for cleaning. A c
­ overed dairy compartment
with lift-up lid protects the contents from
transfer of odours. The lid stays open when
raised for quick and easy access.
Freezers drawers
Transparent freezer drawer fronts feature in
the majority of Miele freezers. These allow
a visual inspection of the contents without
the need to pull out the drawer. A frozen
food marker system enables a further
indication of the drawer contents.
Miele drawers are enclosed on all sides,
which helps to maintain the drawer
­temperature when it is opened and c
­ ontain
any accidental spillages.
They are easily removed for cleaning and
are designed not to tip.

User convenience
Consistent temperature control
Due to the natural circulation
of air in the appliance, there are
different temperature zones in
the refrigerator. Cold, ­heavy air sinks to
the lowest section of the appliance and
warmer air will rise ­nearer the top. This has
a bearing on where to place food to obtain
the o
­ ptimum ­results.
The Miele Dynamic cooling system, which
features on a number of appliances,
overcomes natural temperature
imbalances by circulating cold air around
the appliance.
With Dynamic cooling the temperature is set in the normal way with the ­tempera­ture
control and the electronics ensure that
the desired temperature is reached and
maintained.
This constant flow of air enables the
temperature inside the appliance to be
maintained at the same level throughout.
This provides the benefit of allowing you to
choose where to store your food.
An additional benefit of Dynamic cooling
is that food and drinks will be chilled up to
50% more quickly than in a conventional
refrigerator without this feature.

Perfect Fresh
The Perfect Fresh zone has a dry
and a ­humidity controlled
compartment and is particularly
suitable for long term storage of fresh
food. Because the temperature is
electronically maintained at just above
freezing point, fruit, vegetables, fish, meat
and poultry can be stored for twice as long
as in the refrigerator and still maintain their
freshness. Tests have shown that v­ itamin
C levels in food s­ tored in the ­Perfect Fresh
zone hardly change over a p
­ eriod of time,
so its health benefits are great too. It is
particu­larly suit­able for storing fruit and
vegetables as well as salad items which
have a high water content and need to be
kept moist.
The dry compartment is excellent for sto­ring
meat, fish, poultry and dairy pro­ducts. And
with relative humidity ­levels adjust­able
between 45% and 90% in the humidity
controlled compartment, you can adjust the
­climate inside the compartment to suit the
type of food you are storing.

User convenience
The new Active Charcoal filter is
the only filter of its kind able to
bind aromatic ­molecules and to
neutralise odours such as those from fish
to cheese.
The Active-Charcoal filter easily clips
on the back of the refrigerator. The filter
is ­exclusive to certain models with a
­refrigerator compartment. It involves
a ­retainer guide on the rear trim of the
glass shelves to facilitate fitting. A timer
has been incorporated into the electronic
­controls for the purpose of when to replace
the filter to ensure proper functioning and
prevent unpleasant odours inside the
fridge.
Ice in an instant
For cool drinks at parties and on
long, hot summer days, ice is a
must. How­ever, in conventional
fridge-freezers, it is not ­always instantly
available. Miele’s ice ­cube makers offer
this convenience in freestanding and
integrated models.
Between 100 to 120 perfectly formed
ice cubes can be made in 24 hours
(approximately 1.1 kg). When ready, ice is
dispensed automatically into one half-sized
freezer drawer where it can be stored until
needed.

If ice is not required, the ice maker can
simply be switched off and the storage
container can then be used as a
conventional freezer drawer.
N.B. These appliances have to be plumbed
into a fresh water supply. A water filter kit
is recommended for crystal clear ice to be
made.
The filter housing contains 2 filters which
fit into the unit. The retainer guide is sleek
and discreet, prevents sliding and is
­conveniently designed for handling.
No more defrosting!
An increasing number of Miele
refrigeration appliances have this
important feature. Frost-free is a
perfect system for optimum convenience
and removes the tedious task of emptying
and repacking the freezer. It results in zero
build-up of frost on both food and the
evaporator, saving time and electricity.
How it works…
In appliances which feature the frostfree system, cool air is circulated by a
fan, enabling the food to freeze more
quickly and thoroughly. Moisture in the air
condenses and freezes on the evaporator,
where it melts automatically and drains
through a channel into a condensate tray.
The heat from the compressor then causes
the water to evaporate.
Enclosed evaporator
Selected frost-free models will now also
feature a new enclosed evaporator. The
evaporator, instead of being located at
the back of the appliance will now fit into
the front casing. The cabinet interior is
surrounded on all sides by concealed
aluminium evaporator tubing, which
leaves the surface smooth on all sides
and exceptionally easy to clean. The new
positioning of the evaporator offers more
flexible storage options, as the glass
shelves can be ­removed easily ­allowing
the drawers to ­accommodate much larger
items.

With MasterCool refrigerators the user is

Combining MasterCool appliances
MasterCool appliances are based on a
modular system for maximum flexibility
and are designed to be fitted with either
a stainless steel front panel or with a
furniture front to match your kitchen (not
supplied).Please select the hinge door
opening when designing the kitchen as we
do not recommend re-hinging/swapping
door openings.
Please note a merging kit (side heating/
assembly kit-KSK 1002) is required when
installing appliances side-by-side, available
from Miele as an optional accessory.

Miele’s unique ClearView halogen
lighting system cascades light
from the top and sides of the appliance to
achieve maximum illumination inside the
cabinet. With no blind or dark spots you
have a clear view of your food on all levels.
MasterFresh drawers
MasterFresh drawers keep
everything from fruit and
vegetables to salmon and cheese at the
perfect temperature* and humidity level.
Simply select the drawer location and type
of food from the MasterCool menu, and
the electronics will adjust and maintain
the ideal conditions so your food is kept
MasterFresh and nutritious for longer.
*(between 0.5°C and 3°C depending on
food type selected).
Super cool and Super freeze
After stocking your fridge or freezer with a
significant load of new groceries, engaging
the Super cool or Super freeze function
will override the thermostat and begin to
rapidly cool the cabinet down to just under
2°C in the refrigerator and to -30°C in the
freezer. Switching off automatically, after
6 hours in the refrigerator or 52 hours
in the freezer, it’s guaranteed to lock in
freshness, taste and texture.
Drop and Lock system
Miele’s Drop and Lock system
uses a slide rail system to move
shelves and door fittings. A onehanded ‘tilt
up and slide motion’ is all it takes to move
a door shelf higher or lower. Once located,
simply let go and watch it automatically
lock into position. Shelves are easily
adjusted in 1.5 cm height adjustments
by lifting them up at the front and sliding
them up or down to the height you want
them at before lowering them into position.
A floating deli drawer in the refrigerator
and unique divider system in the freezer
compartment glide effortlessly across
shelves or within drawers to maximize
storage efficiency.
The stability hinge
Miele’s stability hinge is capable of
supporting a collective load of over 90 kg
and is tested for over 200,000 door
cycles… that’s twice the industry standard.
Fully loaded, with food on the inside and a
heavy furniture door panel on the outside,
these hinges can support a weight of up to
120 kg and ensure that the door will remain
stable and secure over time.
Refreshing ice cubes... and
more
The MasterCool freezers and
fridge-freezer offer an Ice-maker or a
water/ice dispensing unit (depending on
model) so you can have a refreshing glass
of cold water or a chilled drink with ice or
crushed ice whenever you want. Thanks to
Miele’s Dual Compressor System there is
no exchange of air between the ice maker
and the rest of the freezer so flavours stay
where they belong.

The perfect home for fine wines
Changes in storage temperature, however
subtle, can dramatically affect the quality
of wine. Miele’s MasterCool electronic
controls ensure a precise and constant
temperature in the three independently
controlled cooling zones, which can be
used to store or temper red and white
wines and champagne at their ideal
temperatures. In each zone the bottles are
gently cradled on one of 14 high-quality
acacia shelves, two of which are fixed
in place to separate the cooling zones,
and the rest are extendable to make for
easy viewing and access. Controlling
the humidity level is also important for
long-term wine storage. If the humidity
is too low, the corks will dry out and no
longer provide an effective seal. Miele’s
Dynamic cooling system ensures that the
air and humidity are circulated evenly,
alleviating the problem of dried corks
and guaranteeing a perfect bouquet. An
active charcoal filter keeps the air inside
the appliance fresh so your delicate
wines cannot absorb unwanted odours.
The unique LED system does not affect
the internal temperature of the cabinet,
and enables you to display your wines to
perfection. Opening the door activates the
ClearView halogen lighting so that you can
view your collection and select the perfect
bottle for the occasion.

1 Precise temperature control
The temperature you select is
controlled electronically and accurately.
A temper­ature display on the control panel
of some models will give you correct
information about the temperature inside
the appliance.
2 Super Cool and Super Freeze
The temperature inside the fridge-freez­er
can be set to the coldest level for a short
time by pressing the Super Cool or Super
Freeze button. This is particularly useful
when chilling or freez­ing large amounts of
food at once. By freezing food as quickly as
possible, the consistency and texture of the
food is maintained when ­defrosted. Auto
switch off to save energy.
3 The alarm
Most Miele fridge-freezers have an alarm
­indicator light on the control ­panel and a
buzzer which will sound if the temperature
in the freezer rises, if the freezer door is kept
open for longer than 60 seconds, and if
there has been a power failure it will sound
when the appliance is switched on again,
reminding you to check the food.
4 Lighting
Miele fridge-freezers all have an i­nterior
light.
5 Dairy compartment
The convenient dairy compartment lid
stays open when raised. Perfect for quick

6 Dynamic cooling
The Miele Dynamic cooling system
­circulates the air evenly throughout the
­appliance so items can be stored on any
shelf. This results in no moisture loss
from the appliance, an even tem­perature
throughout, no odour transfer between
sections and efficient cooling performance.
It is particularly useful in hot weather,
­ensuring the optimum cabinet temperature
is quickly established once the door has
been closed, and saves up to 50% of time
when ­cooling fresh food.
7 Height adjustable glass shelving
Food can be safely stored on quality
shelves made from safety glass. Most
are height adjus­table, and some are split
shelves to allow for the storage of taller
items. In this way the space inside the
fridge-freezer is optimised.
8 Adjustable door shelves
The shelves in the door are made
from a high quality, transparent plastic with
chrome or stainless steel brackets. They
are height ad­justable and can be removed
if ­required.
J Large freezer drawers
A large amount of food can be stored in the
spacious drawers, making eco­nomical use
of space. Most models have transparent
drawer fronts, enabling you to see what
you have ­stored. They can be pulled out to
the maximum extent without tipping and
are solid all round so any spillages can be
easily contained.

Wine
Anyone who appreciates good wine will know how important it is to store it in the right way. Wine is alive! And as such reacts either
­positively or negatively to its environment. Certain conditions need to be met in order for a wine to either mature properly or keep without
spoiling.
Temperature is ultimately the most
important factor. The optimum temperature
for storing wine is between 10–12°C,
but any constant temperature within
­5–18°C is ­acceptable. Any change in
temperature on a daily or weekly basis can
have a detrimental effect on the wine and
cause it to age prematurely.
If wines are kept at too high a temperature
they will age faster, whereas if wines are
stored at too cold a temperature, d
­ eposits
will develop. This is why a ­constant
temperature is vital.
Corks should always be kept moist,
therefore storing bottles in a humid
environment prevents them from drying
out and therefore shrinking. If corks are
allowed to dry out, they lose their elasticity
and allow air to enter the wine affecting the
overall taste. Storing bottles horizontally
is also important as it allows the wine to
remain in contact with the cork, again
helping to keep the corks moist.
Extraneous smells and light can also be
harmful to wine. Any unwanted smells
can enter the wine through the cork,
contaminating it, and ultraviolet light may
give wine an unpleasant aroma. Therefore
a proper ventilation system, such as an
active charcoal filter which can be found
in all our wine storage a
­ ppliances, is very
important in helping to retain the overall
taste of the wine. A solid door or a glass
door, which protects the wine from UV
light is also a necessity.

than red wine!”
Ultimately, wine needs to be given time to
settle, allowing it to mature correctly. Any
vibrations from, for example m
­ achinery or
other appliances, can ­disturb the sediment
within the wine, and ­damage it.
All these factors are important when storing wine and some excellent appliances

Wine storage units
If you don’t have a cellar, the Miele
KWL 4712 S ed and KWL 4912 S ed-1
wine storage units offer the ideal long-term
storage conditions for red and white wine
as well as champagne.
They regulate the temperature inside
the cabinet between 5°C and 22°C,
and if the temperature drops below the
pre-set temperature, the appliance will
automatically switch from cooling to
heating in order to maintain the chosen
temperature and protect the wine.
The KWL 4912 S ed features an
insulated stainless steel door and the
KWL 4712 S ed features a tinted, ­tempered
glass door offering protection from UV
light. LED lighting on the KWL 4712 S ed
means you always have a clear view of

solution. Forming one half of a Miele
