fewer watts. Acoustic Suspension — uses a sealed enclosure
to provide tight, accurate bass response. Acoustic suspension
speakers often need more power from a receiver or amp.
Video-shielded Indicates that a speaker can be safely placed
on or near a TV, because the magnets in it have been shielded.
Woofer, Subwoofer Most speakers use a passive (nonpowered) woofer for bass frequencies; some use a powered
subwoofer to deliver deep bass. The charts at right list each
speaker’s bass driver — a “(2)” indicates dual drivers in a single
cabinet. Powered subwoofers are indicated with a footnote.
Connector Type There are three types of speaker connectors.
Spring clips accept bare wire and pin connectors. Binding
posts add spade-connector and banana-plug capability. 5-way
binding posts also accept double-banana plugs.
Recommended Power Range The minimum and
maximum power ratings for a speaker. This info tells you
whether a speaker is suited to your receiver.
Sensitivity Measures a speaker’s efficiency when converting
power into sound. Using the same amount of power, a speaker
with high sensitivity plays louder than one with low sensitivity.
Frequency Response 20 to 20,000 Hertz is about the range
of human hearing. Frequency response tells you how much of
that range a speaker or subwoofer can reproduce. A lower
number on the left means deeper bass.
Recommended Center and Surrounds For top-quality
surround sound, all your speakers should sound as much alike
as possible. In the chart on top of pg. 115, we recommend voicematched center and surround speakers. (Note: these are not necessarily the only centers or surrounds for your main speakers.)
Speaker Placement and Cables Because most small- and
medium-sized speakers sound best when their drivers are at
roughly ear-level, many people choose to wall-mount their
speakers, or place them on speaker stands (see pgs. 87-89, 116,
118, and 126). Also, good speaker cable makes a serious difference in a speaker’s sound (see pgs. 111, 117, 119, and 123-125.)

Mark Fleischmann of Home Theater concluded that, judged against
similarly priced speaker systems, “the Pinnacles kick butt and kick
it real hard. They’re not merely, as the old saying goes, ‘competitive

Pinnacle took a serious look at the usual problem of eliminating
internal cabinet resonances. The five sleek cabinets are made of diecast aluminum and braced inside. Resonance issues solved, Pinnacle

3" carbon graphite extended range drivers with rubber surrounds,

When Pinnacle made the Subsonic powered sub (without

Digital Cameras
Effective Pixels A camera’s CCD (“charge coupled
device”) captures light as millions of tiny pixels, and
is measured in “megapixels” (1 megapixel = 1 million
pixels). Because not every pixel in a CCD is used
for image capture, effective pixels is a count of the
megapixels that are actually used to take a picture.
The higher this number, the finer the resolution!
Resolution A measure of image quality based on
the number of pixels used to snap a shot. Resolution
ranges from low (640 x 480) to very high (2592
x 1944). High resolution means sharper pictures
(which require more memory to store). Most
cameras have several resolution settings.
Storage Media All of our cameras come with
removable, reusable memory. When buying extra
media, remember that memory varies in how much
storage it offers (the more megabytes it has, the
more pics it can store), and how much it costs.
Manual Controls Every camera here offers features
like autofocus and auto exposure. Some cameras
also provide manual adjustments, like manual focus
(either as a focus ring or lever, or as a set of “manual”
focus settings), exposure control, and sensitivity
(ISO) settings (to simulate different film speeds).
Zoom Optical zoom offers clear, detailed closeups. Digital zoom often uses interpolation to zero
in further, but results in poorer image quality.
(Combined digital and optical zoom is called
“Total zoom.”)
Color LCD Viewscreen Most digital cams come
with a built-in color LCD viewscreen that acts as a
viewfinder — and lets you see images you’ve already
snapped. Most cams also offer a traditional optical
viewfinder — a great way to save battery power or
shoot in bright light, where the LCD isn’t as vivid.
Rechargeable Batteries Cams that include
rechargeables usually end up saving you money —
a digital camera uses up alkaline batteries quickly.
Digital Camcorders
Optical Zoom Optical zoom offers clear, detailed
close-ups. Digital zoom uses interpolation to zero
in further, but you don’t get the same image quality.
CCD Imager A CCD (“charge coupled device”) is
the part of your camcorder that reads and captures
light as tiny pixels — it’s measured in “megapixels”
(one megapixel = 1 million pixels). Higher pixel
count means higher resolution — that is, a better
picture.
MPEG/M-JPEG Movie Clip Mode In this mode,
your camcorder can capture video clips in a format
that’s easy to send via e-mail or post online.
Video Streaming Many digital camcorders now
let you stream live video to your computer (most
in MPEG or M-JPEG format). This allows you to
use your cam for videoconferencing online. (You
may need separate software — be sure to check the
camcorder’s PC requirements.)
Connections All our camcorders offer A/V outputs for sending video to a VCR or TV, and inputs,
so external video can be piped in. Digital models
also have an i.LINK™ jack, for easy video transfer
to a compatible PC. A USB connection allows fast

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology has been under development
for over 30 years. Recent advances in
the resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio of LCD panels have led to

The many advantages of
“tube-less” LCD TVs
LCD TVs don’t use the scanning electron gun and picture tube found
in conventional TVs. Because they
don’t, LCD models offer much greater
versatility in placement and use.
First, they aren’t susceptible to
distortion from a nearby magnet (like
a speaker), which means you don’t
have to worry about unshielded
speakers getting too close to the TV
and damaging the picture tube
(there is no “tube”).
Also, because an LCD screen
doesn’t have a coating of phosphor

makes each pixel phosphor glow.

image focus and geometry, a high,
even light output, and the ability
to produce over 16 million colors.
