NEW REPORT:
2014
AMA EDUCATION
Work/Life Profiles
of Today’s U.S. Physician
Work and lifestyles
differ by age:
Where do you fit?
Do you work longer hours than your peers?
How do your retirement savings compare?
Is your debt load higher or lower
than other physicians?
What hobbies and activities do you share
with other physicians?
Are your practice plans the same as
your peers’ plans?
Answers to these questions and many more can
be found in the newly released report, the
2014 Work/Life Profiles of Today’s U.S. Physician at
amainsure.com/worklife2014. The report is based on
a national survey created and conducted by AMA
Insurance to better understand physicians, ages
30-69, and their work and lifestyles, and life choices.
No ‘one’ work/lifestyle profile
While the report produced a wide range of insights,
the core finding is that there really is no ‘one’ profile
for physicians when it comes to lifestyle. Rather, there
are many and they relate specifically to different age
groups - under age 40, ages 40-59 and ages 60-69
– with some gender differences.
Three profiles by age –
compare yourself to your peers
To better understand how you compare with your
peers, we have created three brief summaries of
report results on key topics, by age group.
See page three of this article to check your
age group profile to see where you fit.

Study shows physician impact on economy
Each physician in the United States supports 13.84 jobs on
average and contributes $2.2 million in economic output,
underscoring how physicians influence the health of both
their patients and the economy, according to the AMA’s new
Economic Impact Study.
and benefits, and state and local tax revenue. At the
national level, physicians support greater economic output
than the following industries: legal services, home health
care, higher education and nursing home and residential
care.
The study, prepared by IMS Health and released this week,
focused on the roughly 720,000 physicians who primarily
engage in patient care activities, as opposed to those who
focus on research or teaching. Nationally, these physicians
support $1.6 trillion in total economic output—that’s $2.2
million per physician—and 10 million jobs.
“Physicians carry tremendous responsibility as skilled
healers, trusted confidants and patient advocates, but their
positive impact isn’t confined to the exam room,” said AMA
President Ardis Dee Hoven, MD, in a statement.
The study also found that:
•
Physicians support $775.5 billion in wages and benefits
at the national level.
•
Physicians contribute $65.2 billion in total state and
local taxes nationally, or $90,449 in local and state tax
revenue per physician.
The study estimated the total economic impact of patient
care physicians at the national level and for each of the 50
states and Washington, D.C., measuring output, jobs, wages

$1.6 trillion, 10 million jobs:
“The new AMA study illustrates that physicians are strong
economic drivers that are woven into their local communities
by the commerce and jobs they create,” Dr. Hoven said.
“These quality jobs not only support the caring role of
physicians, but also pay taxes that support schools, housing,
transportation and other public services in local
communities.”

how to get the
most accurate blood
pressure measurement
As a standard part of many physicians’ office workflows, measuring blood
pressure may seem routine. But seemingly minor issues can impact blood pressure
measurement, artificially inflating a patient’s blood pressure by anywhere from
two to 40 mmHg.
Now is a good time to reevaluate blood pressure measurement processes and talk
to patients about managing their high blood pressure. Here are several ways you
can make sure a patient’s blood pressure is accurately measured:
Taking the checklist
approach to blood
pressure management
can help ensure quality
care in screening for
and treating patients
with high blood
pressure, preventing the
development of heart
disease and stroke
down the road.

4.
The patient’s feet are flat on the floor, and legs are uncrossed.
The patient’s arm and back are properly supported.
The patient doesn’t need to use the restroom and can comfortably remain still.
The patient’s arm is bare, and the sphygmomanometer cuff is on skin,
not over any clothing.
5. The patient is not speaking and has had at least three minutes of quiet time
prior to the measurement.
If a patient talks during the measurement, for example, or if the patient’s feet aren’t
flat on the floor, there’s a chance that blood pressure measurement will give a
falsely high reading. This could lead to a prescription for an unnecessary,
potentially harmful, medication. At the same time, other factors can contribute to
unidentified and untreated hypertension, which can be deadly.
Incorporating these standardized principles into practice workflows is a key
element of the AMA’s Improving Health Outcomes initiative. A pilot program
involving multiple clinical sites in two states is implementing principles of safe

Common problems that account for inaccurate blood pressure measurement

2. O'Brien, eta/. Blood Press Mon. 2002
Taking the checklist approach to blood pressure management can help ensure
quality care in screening for and treating patients with high blood pressure,
preventing the development of heart disease and stroke down the road.
To apply safe design principles to blood pressure management, the AMA is
collaborating with researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the pilot sites to
develop and test a set of evidence-based recommendations, based on a simple
framework called the M.A.P. for achieving optimal hypertension control:
• Measuring blood pressure accurately every time its measured
• Acting rapidly to address high blood pressure readings
• Partnering with patients to promote self-management of high blood pressure
The pilot sites are integrating best evidence into each step of the M.A.P.
framework. For example, the AMA is incorporating successful elements of a
program at Johns Hopkins Center to Eliminate Cardiovascular Health Disparities in
designing resources to help practices engage patients in better self-management.

how to determine whether
your patients have prediabetes
While 29 million Americans have diabetes, another 86 million adults are on the
path to developing the disease because they have prediabetes. These new
estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underscore
the urgency of screening patients for prediabetes to help them avoid becoming a
statistic.
People with prediabetes are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes as
well as heart disease and stroke. The good news is that prediabetes is a reversible
condition. That’s why screening is so important.

People with prediabetes have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but
not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes has no clear
symptoms, but some individuals with prediabetes have signs of type 2 diabetes,
such as intense feelings of thirst.
Codes to use when reporting prediabetes and diabetes screening are listed in the

The AMA is focusing on prediabetes through its Improving Health Outcomes

health and reduce health care spending.
A pilot program in partnership with the YMCA, currently taking place at
locations in three states, will establish a process for physicians to increase
screening for prediabetes and refer patients to the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention
Program in their communities.
AMA EDUCATION
Physicians can use a few different ways to test for prediabetes, including the A1C
test, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test or oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A1C
results of 5.7 to 6.4 percent, FPG levels of 100 to 125, or OGTT levels of 140
to 199 indicate prediabetes.
Visit the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program website to find out
whether an evidence-based diabetes prevention program is available in your
community.
