Overview
The iJaz Modem enables remote control of the BEHA iJaz Power Control System, and you
can “SMS your cabin warm” by sending simple SMS messages. It also have several other
highly useful features, like receiving events from external systems (e.g. smoke detectors,
alarm systems, flooding sensors and similar), report the current status and send an alarm
SMS if something should occur. You can also apply you own text in the messages making
it really easy to identify the cause of event.
The most important features of the iJaz Modem are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
iJaz Control – Enables Normal or Power Saving mode on the BEHA iJaz Control
unit.
Password – Use of password to prevent unauthorized use of the BEHA iJaz Control
unit.
Recipient list – A list of up to five recipients to received status report messages
and event notifications.
Power On Message – Send a message to the recipient list when the iJaz Modem
starts up to indicate that a power loss has occurred.
Event Notification – Sends a message to the recipient list to notify of an event /
signal from a connected external system has occurred.
PIN – Change the SIM card pin code using SMS.
To enable the Normal or Power Saving mode on the BEHA iJaz Control Unit use the IJAZ
command with the correct options. The command can be sent by every one who has the
correct password and it is not necessary to enroll any phone numbers / recipients on the
iJaz Modem for it to work. This makes the iJaz Modem very easy to use, and the password
can be changed at any time if needed. For a more detailed description see the IJAZ and
PWD command description.
The BEHA iJaz Power Control System has two programs, Normal and Power Save which
can be enabled using the iJaz Modem. If the iJaz Modem should restart for some reason,
for example after a power down, the last program set on the BEHA iJaz Control Module by
the iJaz Modem is remembered and re-enabled. The iJaz Modem is not able to read the
currently enabled program on the BEHA iJaz Control Module, but only enable a program
and remember it.
Due to the fact that the iJaz Modem have no way of detecting if the mode was changed
directly on the iJaz Control Unit, it is recommended that you use the iJaz Modem to
change the power control mode before you arrive and when you leave. This is especially
important if you leave for some time, since a power down could make the iJaz Modem reenable the normal mode if that was set the last time the iJaz Modem was used.
To illustrate this situation, for example if you changed the mode from power saving to
normal by sending a SMS to the iJaz Modem the day before you left for the cabin, and
when you leave you set the power saving mode manually on the iJaz Control Unit, then
2
the normal mode is saved by the modem for later use, and if a power down occurs, the
normal mode will be re-enabled and could potentially leave the power on for some time
before you notice it. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you only use the iJaz
Modem to change the mode when you leave.
The power on message (PWON) and the notification message (NTMS) functions
send the SMS messages to a list of up to five recipients. The recipients are stored on the
SIM card, and can be entered using a mobile phone or by using the LIST command. Using
the LIST command you can also get all currently enrolled, add new and delete existing
recipients.
Important: Do not confuse the password and the PIN code. The password
applies to all commands, while the PIN code is only used to unlock the SIM card
and register the modem on the GSM network.
Getting started
When you start the iJaz Modem up for the first time or after a hard reset, it is important
that you follow this description precisely. It necessary to have a SIM card for the iJaz
Modem and a mobile phne available to complete this description, see also the chapter
“The SIM Card”.
Important: The power on the modem must not be turned on.

Preparation of the SIM card
Insert the iJaz Modem’s SIM card into a mobile phone and activate it.
Change the PIN code to 1000 (the default PIN code for the iJaz Modem, can be
changed later).
Add potential SMS recipients to the entries 1 – 5.
Send a SMS message to you own phone number to obtain the phone number of the
iJaz Modem (if you are currently using your own mobile phone, the SMS will be
stored in the network until you reconnect with our SIM card).
First time startup of the iJaz Modem
Insert the SIM card into the iJaz Modem, as described in the chapter ”The SIM
Card”.
Power on the iJaz Modem.
Wait for at least 50 seconds for the red status led next to the SIM card to start
blinking with 2 seconds intervals (also see the chapter “The Status Led”)..
The iJaz Modem is ready for use.
Configuring the iJaz Modem
Change the PIN code on the SIM card using the PIN command. It is recommended
that you change the PIN code to the original PIN code, use default password 1234.
Change the default password from the default 1234 to your own using the PWD
command (the original PIN code is recomended).
