VCX™ CONNECT
INSTALLATION AND
CONFIGURATION
The VCX Connect product is a member of the VCX IP Telephony Solutions
and is designed to accommodate up to 250 telephone users. Other VCX
IP Telephony products support larger number of users and offer additional
features that are not present in the VCX Connect product.

3Com recommends that you do not modify these samples. Instead, keep
them for reference and create new items based on the samples.
CAUTION: Before you create any new parameters, modify the network
parameters of your VCX Connect servers so that the new parameters use
the new IP addresses. For instructions on how to change the network
parameters of a VCX Connect server, see the appropriate section in the
next chapter:

The VCX Connect product provides IP Telephony and IP Messaging
services and is offered on these hardware platforms:
■
VCX Connect 100 Server
■
VCX Connect 200 Server
The VCX Connect 100 server runs the VCX Linux Operating System and
provides IP Telephony and IP Messaging services. The base configuration

includes 4 FXO ports for connection to the public telephone network and
4 FXS ports for connection to analog telephones and fax machines.
To provide connection to the public telephone network, it can contain:
■
FXO analog gateway modules (4 ports are standard)
■
One or two Digital (T1) gateway modules (optional)
Both FXO and digital gateway modules can be configured in the same
VCX Connect 100 Server.
Analog and digital gateway modules are contained within the VCX
Connect 100 Server chassis.
The VCX Connect 100 server is recommended for up to 100 telephone
users.
VCX Connect 200
Server
The VCX Connect 200 server runs the VCX Linux Operating System and
provides IP Telephony and IP Messaging services.
It works with external FXO analog gateways or digital (T1) gateways that
provide connections to the public telephone network.
Additionally, external analog FXS gateways provide connection to analog
devices such as analog telephones and fax machines.
The VCX Connect 200 server is recommended for up to 250 telephone
users.
The 3Com V7111 analog gateways and the 3Com V7122 digital
gateways that work with the VCX Connect 200 server are purchased
separately and are available in several configurations, depending on the
number and type of connections needed. In addition, the 3Com V6100
(in gateway only mode) is supported for analog or digital connections to
the public telephone network.
Supported
Configurations
The supported configurations of the VCX Connect product are:
■
A primary and secondary pair of servers (either two VCX Connect 100
servers or two VCX Connect 200 servers).
■
A single primary server (either a VCX Connect 100 server or a VCX
Connect 200 server).

CAUTION: Mixtures of server types are not supported.
The single primary server configuration can be updated later to include a
secondary server. The server being added must be the same as the
original (primary) server. For example, you cannot add a VCX Connect
200 server as a secondary server to a VCX Connect 100 primary server.
Configuration
Overview
All VCX Connect servers arrive from the factory configured with default IP
addresses. To adapt the servers to your environment, you must:

Modify some of the default configuration parameters of the servers
■
Install license key files to support more than the 25 telephone users
and 25 voice mailboxes provided by the factory default license.
Many parameters are preconfigured on VCX Connect servers in order
make installation and configuration easier. Some of these parameters
must be modified in order to accommodate the servers to your network.
When you run the vcx-config-network or the vcx-reconfigure script
to modify the network and other parameters of the servers, you will need
the information in Table 1:

Accessing a
VCX Connect Server
To reconfigure the network attributes, you must access each VCX
Connect server and run the vcx-reconfigure-network script. Access the
VCX Connect server using one of these connection methods:
Locally
■
Use a null modem cable to connect a PC to the serial port on the
server and use a terminal emulator program such as HyperTerminal to
connect to the server through the PC’s serial port. See Table 3 on
page 15 for configuration parameters for terminal emulation
programs.
■
■
The serial cable for the VCX Connect 100 server comes with the
server. One end connects to the serial port (marked 1010) on the
connection module on the front panel of the server. The other end
connects to the serial port on the PC.
The null modem cable for the VCX Connect 200 server must have
these characteristics:
DB9 female connector on each end
Sufficient length to reach from the serial port on the PC to the
serial port on the VCX Connect 200 server
Remotely
To perform the initial network reconfiguration, connect the VCX Connect
server and a PC to a hub or switch as described in detail later in this
document and use one of these connection methods:
■
Use a terminal emulation program such as PuTTY or Tera Term Pro
(with SSHv2 support) to connect to the server over the network.
Obtaining a License
■

Alternatively, use the ssh (secure shell) UNIX/Linux command to
connect to the server. This command is available on most UNIX- or
Linux-based systems. If you are using a Microsoft Windows PC you
can install the Cygwin tools. Cygwin provides a Linux-like environment
for Microsoft Windows.
For information on how to download and install the Cygwin tools on your
Windows PC, access this URL: http://www.cygwin.com/
The PuTTY, Tera Term Pro, and ssh connection methods can also be used
to perform any reconfiguration after the network configuration has been
performed on the servers and they are connected to the network.

VCX Connect 100 and VCX Connect 200 servers come from the factory
with pre-installed licenses that support:
■
25 telephones
■
25 voice mailboxes
To support additional telephones or voice mailboxes, you must purchase
additional telephone and/or voice mailbox licenses. The instructions on
how to obtain additional licenses can be found in the VCX Installation
Guide. Refer to the License Key topic in Chapter 1.
CAUTION: License keys are installed on both the primary and secondary
servers. If you have installed a primary server only and later you want to
add a secondary server, the secondary server license capacity must match
the parameters of the primary server license key (the same number of
telephones, voice mailboxes, and so on). If the license key on the
secondary server does not match and the primary becomes unavailable
for any reason, system operation switches to the secondary server but the

secondary server may not be able to support all telephones and voice
mailboxes.
Example: The primary server has a license for 25 additional telephones
(50 total) and 25 additional voice mailboxes (50 total). The secondary
server has only the default licenses and can support only 25 telephones
users and voice mailboxes. On failover, only 25 telephone users can make
telephone calls and access their voice mailboxes. However, the additional
25 telephones can make emergency calls.

A VCX Connect system can include both a primary and a secondary
server in order to support continued operation if the primary server
becomes unavailable. The IP Telephony and IP Messaging services fail over
to use the secondary server until the primary server is restored to
operation. To install a primary and secondary pair of VCX Connect
servers, follow the instructions in this section.
The installation of the primary and secondary VCX Connect servers

CAUTION: You must configure the primary VCX Connect server first and
then the secondary server. During the configuration, the secondary server
obtains some of its information from the primary server. If the primary
server is not configured and in operation, the secondary server
configuration will fail.
Preparation
VCX Connect servers can be preconfigured and later taken to the end
customer site, or they can be configured at the customer site. In either
case, the configuration work is done first and the servers are then moved
to their final location and connected to the network.
1 Unpack the primary server and connect it to a power source.
2 Unpack the secondary server and connect it to a power source.
3 If you are using a VCX Connect 200 server, unpack any gateways and
connect them to a power source.
Configuring Networking Parameters
1 Connect the eth0 interface of each VCX Connect server to a hub or
switch that is not connected to any network.
CAUTION: VCX Connect 200 servers have two Ethernet interfaces. The
VCX software on a VCX Connect server uses only the eth0 interface. You
must use eth0 for normal server operation.
The eth0 adapter on a VCX Connect 100 server is accessed through the
RJ45 connector located on the rear panel of the server.
The eth0 adapter on a VCX Connect 200 server is accessed through one
of the two RJ45 connectors located beside each other on the rear panel
of the server. These connectors are labeled 1 and 2. As you face the rear
of the server, the eth0 connector is the one labeled 1, on the left.
If you prefer, you can use a cross-over Ethernet cable to directly connect
the PC to the VCX Connect server. See “Accessing a VCX Connect Server”
on page 14.
2 Connect a PC to the same hub or switch and:
a Set the IP address of the PC to 192.168.1.180.
b Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
You do not need to configure a default gateway IP address.

3 Start the primary and secondary servers and wait for approximately 5
minutes for the boot process to be completed.
4 Using one of the connection methods outlined in “Accessing a
VCX Connect Server” on page 14, access the primary server and log in to
the root account.
Primary Server Default IP Address: 192.168.1.190
Default Password (root account): pvadmin
CAUTION: 3Com strongly recommends that, for security reasons,
customers change the default passwords on these VCX accounts:
■
app
■
cworks
■
oracle
■
root
■
tomcat
■
vcx
Instructions on how to change these account passwords are found later
in this section. See “Changing Default Passwords” on page 22.
5 On the primary VCX Connect server, run the vcx-config-network
-wizard script (see “Networking Sample Script” on page 55) and change
these network parameters to correspond to the network location in
which you intend to install the server:
■
IP address
■
Subnet mask
■
Default gateway address
■
Primary, secondary, and tertiary DNS server IP addresses
■
DNS search path
■
Primary, secondary, and tertiary NTP (time) server IP addresses
■
Time zone and geographic location information
After you finish, the script may display an error message indicating that
the Network Time Protocol (NTP) server(s) could not be reached. You can
safely ignore this message. The VCX Connect server is not yet connected
to the network and therefore cannot contact the NTP server(s).

6 Shut down the primary server and disconnect all cabling. To shut down
the server, log in to the root account and enter this command:
shutdown now
7 Connect to the secondary VCX Connect server.
8 On the secondary VCX Connect server, log in to the root account and
change the network parameters by running the vcx-config-network wizard command so that the parameters conform to the network
location in which you intend to install the server. Change the parameters
that are described in step 5 of this procedure.
Secondary Server Default IP Address: 192.168.1.192
Default Password (root account): pvadmin
Configuring the Media Gateways
For a VCX Connect 100 server, the media gateways are located within the
same chassis as the VCX Connect server. Use this default IP address to
access the media gateways in the VCX Connect servers:
■
Primary VCX Connect 100 Server Gateways: 192.168.1.200
■
Secondary VCX Connect 100 Server Gateways: 192.168.1.202
1 Connect the media gateway Ethernet port to the same hub or switch to
which the PC is connected. On a VCX Connect 100 server, the Ethernet
port for the media gateways is the RJ45 connector located on the front

with pre-installed licenses to support:

If you obtained additional licenses, install the license keys on the primary
and secondary VCX Connect servers. The primary and secondary licenses
must match in terms of the number of telephone users and the number
of voice mailboxes.

This section describes how to install and configure a single (primary) VCX
Connect server.
A primary VCX Connect server provides all of the features that a
primary/secondary server pair provides, but without the fail over
redundancy. You can add a secondary server at a later time.

Preparation
VCX Connect servers can be preconfigured and later taken to the end
customer site, or they can be configured at the customer site. In either
case, the configuration work is done first and the servers are then moved
to their final location and connected to the network.
1 Unpack the primary server and connect it to a power source.
2 If you are using a VCX Connect 200 server, unpack any gateways and
connect them to a power source.
Configuring Network Parameters
1 Connect the eth0 Ethernet interface of the primary VCX Connect server
to a hub or switch that is not connected to any network.
CAUTION: Some VCX Connect servers have two Ethernet interfaces. The
VCX software on a VCX Connect server uses only the eth0 interface. You
can connect to either the eth0 or the eth1 interface in order to configure
the server but you must use eth0 for normal server operation.
If you prefer, you can use a cross-over Ethernet cable to directly connect
the PC to the VCX Connect server.

5 Run the vcx-config-network -wizard command and change the IP
address, subnet mask, and default gateway address of the primary VCX
Connect server to correspond to the network location in which you
intend to install the server.

For a VCX Connect 100 server, the media gateways are located within the
same chassis as the VCX Connect server. Use this default IP address to
access the media gateways in the VCX Connect servers:

This section describes how to install a secondary VCX Connect server as a
backup to a primary VCX Connect server already in operation. The
secondary server provides a fail-over point in the event that the primary
server becomes unavailable for any reason.
CAUTION: Installing a secondary server requires reconfiguration of the
primary server. During the reconfiguration process, the primary server is
unavailable and service to telephone users is interrupted. 3Com
recommends that customers reconfigure the primary server at a time
when no telephone activity is expected.

CAUTION: You must reconfigure the primary VCX Connect server before
you configure the the secondary server in order to update the primary
server with information about the secondary server. Later, when you
install and configure the secondary server, it obtains some of its
information from the primary server. If the primary server has not been

reconfigured and/or is not in operation, the secondary server
configuration will fail.
In a primary/secondary configuration, license keys are installed on both
servers. When adding a secondary server to an existing primary server,
the license key for the secondary server must correspond to the license
key on the primary server in terms of the number of telephone users and
the number of voice mailboxes. If you are using the default license key on
the primary, the secondary server default key will match. If you have
purchased and installed additional licenses on the primary server, you
must purchase and install matching licenses on the secondary server.
Preparation
1 Reconfigure the primary VCX Connect server for operation in a
primary/secondary configuration.
a Using one of the connection methods outlined in “Accessing a
VCX Connect Server” on page 14, access the primary server and log
in to the root account.
b Run the vcx-reconfigure script.
Typically, you do not need to change any of the network parameters of
the primary server. If you want to add or change such items as a DNS or
NTP server, you can answer yes to the network configuration prompt and
then supply the new information.
c Enter or change these parameters:
■
IP address of the secondary VCX Connect server
■
Hostname of the peer IP Messaging system (enter vcxsec)
When the vcx-reconfigure script has been completed, the primary VCX
Connect server is rebooted. The server is then ready to communicate with
the secondary VCX Connect server. When the secondary server has been
completely configured, the two servers operate as a primary/secondary
pair.
2 Log out of the primary VCX Connect server.

server will match the primary and you need not obtain an additional
license key.
If you obtained and installed additional licenses on the primary VCX
Connect server, you must obtain and install an additional license key on
the secondary VCX Connect server. The license key must:
■
Correspond to the machineid of the secondary server
■
Match the license key on the primary server, in terms of the number of
telephone users and voice mailboxes.

Reconfiguring the Secondary Server
Reconfigure the secondary server so that it will operate in conjunction
with the primary server.
1 Access the secondary VCX Connect server using the ssh command.
Sample command: ssh root@<secondary server IP address>
2 Run the vcx-reconfigure script, and answer the questions that the
script poses. Your answers are used to update the secondary server
configuration so that it will know about and work with the primary
server.
3 Accept the default answer (no) to the network configuration prompt.
4 In the VCX Services section of the vcx-reconfigure script, the answers
that you provide to questions such as site description and site name must
match the answers you gave when you configured the primary VCX
Connect server. The answers you provide to other prompts must be
unique to the secondary VCX Connect server. See “Reconfiguration
Sample Script” on page 60. The comments within the sample script
provide guidance on how to answer the prompts.
When the vcx-reconfigure script has been completed, the secondary VCX
Connect server is rebooted. The server is then ready to communicate with
the primary VCX Connect server.

Duplicating the VCX Database on the Secondary Server
Before you can set up database replication between the primary and
secondary VCX Connect servers, you must:
■
Back up the database on the primary VCX Connect server
■
Copy the database backup file to the secondary server
■
Restore the database backup file on secondary server.
Backing up the Database on the Primary Server
1 On the primary server, log in to the tomcat account.
2 Enter the following commands to change the directory and stop Tomcat:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/scripts/rc3.d
./S70tomcat stop
3 Log in to the cworks account and enter these commands to stop the
database service:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/scripts/rc3.d
./S20vcxdata stop
4 Enter the following commands to start the database backup utility:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/bin
./backupVcxdata
5 The utility prompts you to verify that Tomcat and the VCX Authentication
and Directory server services are stopped. Enter y to confirm the services
are stopped.
6 When prompted for the site ID, enter the site description that you
configured for the VCX Connect servers. The script creates a backup file
containing the VCX database. By default the file is located here:
/opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/db/export/
7 Log in to the tomcat account and enter the following commands:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/scripts/rc3.d
./S70tomcat start
8 Log in to the cworks account and enter the following commands:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/scripts/rc3.d
./S20vcxdata start

Copying the Database Backup File to the Secondary Server
1 While still logged in to the cworks account on the primary VCX Connect
server, navigate to the directory that contains the database backup files.
cd /opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/db/export/
2 Identify the backup file that you just created. Backup file names have this
format:
vcxdata<site ID>backup.<version of vcxdata>.tgz
3 Use this command to copy the database backup file from the primary
VCX Connect server to the secondary server:
scp vcxdata<site ID>backup.*.tgz cworks@<IP address of the
secondary VCX Connect server>:/opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/db/import
4 When prompted for the cworks password, enter it, and the file is copied
to the secondary server.
Restoring the Database on the Secondary Server
On the secondary VCX Connect server:
1 Log in to the tomcat account.
2 Enter the following commands to change the directory and stop Tomcat:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/scripts/rc3.d
./S70tomcat stop
3 Log in to the cworks account and enter these commands to stop the
database service:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/scripts/rc3.d
./S20vcxdata stop
On the secondary VCX Connect server:
1 Log in to the cworks account and enter these commands:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/bin
./restoreVcxdata
2 The script prompts you to confirm that the tomcat and vcxdata processes
have been stopped. Enter y to confirm.
3 When prompted for the site ID, enter the site description that you
configured on both the primary and secondary VCX Connect servers.
The database backup file is used to populate the database on the
secondary VCX Connect server.

On the primary VCX Connect server:
1 Log in to the cworks account and enter this command:
cd /opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/bin
./setupReplication
2 When prompted for the site ID, enter the site description that you
configured on both the primary and secondary VCX Connect servers.
3 When prompted for the number of master sites, enter 1.
4 When prompted for the IP address of the Master Definition site, enter the
IP address of the primary VCX Connect server.
5 When prompted for the IP address of the Master site, enter the IP address
of the secondary VCX Connect server.
Allow approximately 30 minutes for the database replication between the
primay and secondary servers to be completed. This time may be longer,
depending on how much data is in the database.
6 To verify that the replication process has been completed, remain logged
in to the cworks account, stay in the /opt/3com/VCX/vcxdata/bin directory
and enter this command:
./checkReplication
The output from this command varies depending on how close the
replication process is to being completed. When you see a message
indicating that the status is NORMAL, the replication process has been
completed.
Configuring Mirroring for IP Messaging
When you add a secondary VCX Connect server after the primary server
has been in operation for some time, you must:
■
Back up the IP Messaging data on the primary server
■
Copy the backed up data to the secondary server
■
Restart the primary server and then the secondary server
Backing Up IP Messaging Data
Before you back up the IP Messaging data, the primary server must be in
an idle state (no call or messaging traffic). This means that the backup
process must be done during non-business hours.
CAUTION: Do not shut down the IP Messaging service. The service must
be running or you cannot back up the IP Messaging data.

1 Log in to the app account on the primary server.

Configuration
To configure voice mailboxes, the simplest method is to:

Create a telephone profile.

Select the Create Mailbox option in that profile.
When you create a user manually, select the profile.
If you use the Data Import method to create users, include the name of
the telephone profile as one of the parameters on each line of the
imported file. See “Adding Users” on page 43.
To add configure other IP Messaging parameters, use the IP Messaging
Administration web browser interface.
1 Open a browser window and navigate to the IP address of the primary
VCX Connect server.
2 Click IP Messaging Web Provisioning.
3 Enter the administrative login ID and password.
CAUTION: The default login ID is sockroot and the default password is
secret. For security reasons, 3Com strongly recommends that customers
change the default password for this account. See “About the IP
Messaging Provisioning Password” on page 47 for instructions on how to
change the default password for the IP Messaging Web Provisioning
interface.
4 Configure the parameters described in table 3. Detailed instructions on

Adding Users
The steps in Table 4 on page 40 are required to set up a VCX Connect
system with basic services. There are many other configuration options
described in the VCX guides. For example, you can also enable the
following features on your VCX Connect system:
The simplest way to create multiple users (with associated telephone
information) on the VCX Connect system is to create a file containing the
user data and then import that file.
To import user data:
1 Open a browser and access the IP address of your VCX Connect server.
2 In the window that appears, click Central Management Console.
3 Enter the administrative login ID and password. The defaults are admin
and besgroup.
For security purposes, 3Com strongly recommends that you change the
default password for all accounts on each VCX Connect server. For
information on how to change the default password for the admin
account, see “About VCX Administrator Web Passwords” later in this
document.
4 In the window that appears, click Site Data menu item, located in the
upper left menu on the screen.
5 In the window that appears, click the Browse button and browse to the
location of the file that contains the user data.
Sample files are provided on each VCX Connect server. See “Resource
Files”, later in this section.

File Formats
3Com suggests that users create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet
containing the user information. Alternative file formats include
comma-separated value files and tab-delimited value files. Both of these
can be created by exporting data from the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
CAUTION: You cannot import data from an Excel Spreadsheet if the
spreadsheet contains any Excel formulas. If you have used formulas to
generate any of your data (for example, extension numbers), you must:
■
Remove all formulas from the spreadsheet
OR
■
Export the spreadsheet to a comma-separated value file or a
tab-delimited file.
In a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, each user is defined by a separate row in
the spreadsheet. Each row contains several columns, some of which are
required and some of which are optional. To leave a user parameter
undefined, leave the corresponding cell in the table blank.
Resource Files
The VCX Connect server includes the following sample files in the
/opt/3com/downloads directory.
The Import Data tool in the VCX Central Manager interface loads any of
the following files and creates VCX telephone extensions and associated
user data based on the content of the files.

VCX-Connect-Sample-import-file.xls – This file contains user data
within a Micrsoft Excel spreadsheet file.
■
VCX-Connect-Sample-import-file.csv – This file contains user data,
separated by commas.

To change the default password for IP Messaging Provisioning interface,
you must use the AppMon interface to the IP Messaging. To access the
Appmon interface, you must use the secure shell (ssh) command and you
must have support for the X Windows System (also referred to as X
Windows or X).
On a UNIX or Linux computer, the X Windows System is often available by
default. On a Windows PC, you can install the Cygwin/X software,
available for download from http://x.cygwin.com.
For instructions on how to install the Cygwin/X software on a PC, see
“Installing Cygwin/X” in the “IP Messaging Module Operations and
System Administration Guide.”
The instructions in this section assume that you have installed the
Cygwin/X software on a PC and have launched a bash shell window.
To access the AppMon interface:
1 In a bash shell window, enter this commands:
ssh -Y -l app <ip address of IP Messaging server>
The -Y switch enables trusted X11 forwarding. Trusted X11 forwardings
are not subject to the X11 SECURITY extension controls. The -l switch
specifies the login ID (app, in this case).
2 When you are prompted for the password, enter nice, or, if you have
already changed the default password for the app account, enter the
new password instead.
A message appears:
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for
X11 forwarding.
You can safely ignore this message.
3 Enter this command:
vmlogin
4 The System Admin window launches.

To modify the default password for the IP Messaging Web interface:
1 In the System Admin window, type root in the Login text box and press
the Enter or Return key.

3 In the Main Menu window that appears, double click Administrator
Profile.
4 In the Administrator Profile window that appears, type root in the Login
ID text box and press the Enter or Return key.
The default password (secret) appears in the Password text box.
5 Modify the default password and click the Exit button in the lower right
area of the screen.
6 Click Exit again to close the System Admin window.
7 In the bash shell window:

Upgrading VCX
Software
UPGRADING VCX SOFTWARE
To upgrade the VCX software on a VCX Connect 100 or VCX Connect
200 server, follow the instructions located in Appendix B of the VCX
Maintenance Manual.
CAUTION: VCX servers other than VCX Connect servers cannot be
upgraded to run VCX Connect software. VCX Connect software upgrades
can be done only from one version of VCX Connect to a more recent
version of VCX Connect.
CAUTION: If you are connecting to the VCX Connect server using the ssh
(secure shell) utility, you will lose your connection to the server when the
server reboots. Typically, you will be able to reconnect to the server before
the upgrade to the new VCX software release has been completed (the
additional time required is a few minutes). Do not perform any function
on the server until the upgrade has been completed.
To verify that the VCX Connect server upgrade has been completed, enter
this command:
vcx-showversion
The output from this command is the current version of VCX Linux.
Repeat this command as necessary until you see the new version.

Using USB Storage
Devices
USB DEVICES
The VCX Connect product supports the use of most USB 1.1 and 2.0
flash memory and disk devices. After they have been recognized by the
VCX system, you can transfer files such as database backups and license
key files to and from these devices. Both VCX Connect servers have USB
connectors.
CAUTION: There is no guarantee that any particular USB storage device
will work with the VCX Connect product. There are so many
manufacturers and models that comprehensive testing was impossible.
Supported File
Systems
The VCX Connect system supports several file system formats to enable
file transfer to and from Windows, Linux, and Mac computers.
■
FAT32 (Windows)
■
Linux ext2/ext3 filesystems
■
VFAT (also known as the "Windows 95" filesystem)
■
DOS FAT
CAUTION: The "NTFS" filesystem is not supported.
CAUTION: Do not use a USB hub to connect more than one USB storage
device. The VCX Connect product supports a single USB storage device.

Requirements
Before you attempt to connect any USB device, the device must:

Contain a single partition only, and
■
Have been previously formatted with one of the file systems
mentioned in “Supported File Systems”.
Most USB 1.1 and 2.0 storage devices meet these requirements.
Connecting USB
Devices
To connect a USB storage device to a VCX Connect system, follow these
instructions:
1 Plug the USB storage device into a USB port.
2 Log in to root account on the VCX Connect server, and enter this
command:
cd /mnt
3 Wait for approximately 10 seconds and then enter this command:
ls
4 Look for the presence of this device in the list:
usbdisk
5 Mount the USB storage device using this command:
mount /mnt/usbdisk
CAUTION: After you you have mounted the USB storage device, do not
disconnect it without first unmounting it. If you fail to unmount the USB
storage device:
■
The VCX Linux operating system is not informed that the device is no
longer available.
■
Data may be lost because files are not gracefully closed.
See “Disconnecting USB Devices” next, for instructions.

Before you disconnect a USB storage device from a VCX Connect system,
you must unmount it.
1 Log in to the root account on the VCX Connect server and enter this
command:
umount /mnt/usbdisk
2 Remove the storage device from the USB port.

Troubleshooting
If your attempt to mount the USB device fails, you can take these
additional steps:
1 Try a different USB device.
2 Look in the /var/log/messages file to determine whether the VCX
Connect system saw the USB device and, if so, what it used for a device
name.
USB devices are treated as virtual SCSI devices so look for recent events in
the messages file that contain device names that begin with the letters sd
(for example sda, sdb, or sdc, depending on how many other SCSI
devices are currently on your system).
3 If you find a new device called sdb1, for example, you can then log in to
the root account and enter these commands to manually mount the
device:
mkdir /mnt/mydisk
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/mydisk

Downloads
You are entitled to bug fix / maintenance releases for the version of
software that you initially purchased with your 3Com product. To obtain
access to this software, you need to register your product and then use
the Serial Number as your login. Restricted Software is available at:

To obtain software releases that follow the software version that you
originally purchased, 3Com recommends that you buy an Express or
Guardian contract, a Software Upgrades contract, or an equivalent
support contract from 3Com or your reseller. Support contracts that
include software upgrades cover feature enhancements, incremental
functionality, and bug fixes, but they do not include software that is
released by 3Com as a separately ordered product. Separately orderable
software releases and licenses are listed in the 3Com Price List and are
