We chose this type of storage because it looks professional and saves space. This specific rack
cabinet was the best value and had adjustable mounting depth. Also, it has computer grade
ventilation and can be easily relocated. Since the rack will be placed in an area that’s easily

Why we chose this…
We have selected the Cat 5 cable because it is the standard cable used in networking. The
difference between Cat 5 and Cat 6 is minimal, but Cat 6 cable costs more money. We did not
select the fiber optic cable because the labs that we are creating are in close proximity to the
servers. There was no need to spend extra money on the fiber optic because the information
wasn’t traveling long distances. We chose the Genica cable because it was the least expensive
on the market. We decided to buy the cable in bulk due to the fact that it is less expensive to
purchase a roll of cable and attach the necessary accessories than it is to purchase ready-to-install
cable by the foot. Since we will be installing the cabling and accessories, there was no need to
incur the additional expense of pre-assembled cable.

The RJ-45 connectors we have found come in a pack of 100. For only $8.94, this package is the
least expensive for the amount of connectors. The RJ-45 connector is the standard for Cat 5
cable. We will need to place a connector at the end of each section of Cat5e cable where the
cable attaches to the computer station, printers, and to the keystone jacks that will be in the wall
mount. The RJ-45 connectors will allow the printers and computers to be included in the
network.

Why we chose this…
We have decided to go with the D-Link Wireless AP. After a great deal of research, we found
this wireless access point to be the least expensive with the best features. The D-Link Wireless
AP has the ability to transfer files with a maximum wireless signal rate of up to 54 Mbps. The
wireless access points will be located in each of the labs, the cozy room and the student
workroom. Faculty will also have access to the wireless connection. Those faculty members
and students connected to the wireless network will only be able to access the Internet and will
not have direct access to the entire network. We have chosen to limit access for security reasons.
For those wireless users who wish to access their web folder or Helios directory, they may utilize
the ftp service to do so.

This laptop was selected to serve in the diagnosis of problems that may occur with the servers.
Since the laptop will only be used when problems arise and the software used on the computer
will not require a great deal of RAM, we selected a very basic system. After comparing prices at
a number if websites, we determined that this laptop from Gateway was the best value.
In the ‘for a few $$ more…” section of the binder, you will find that there is an option to
purchase laptop computers. This option is there in the hopes that the college will wish to
purchase laptop computers that can be signed out by students on an hourly basis. This would
allow students to utilize the comfy room while completing their assignments. The cost of the
laptops is minimal and the students could be charged to replace the computer in the event they do
not return it or it gets broken. (Students would be expected to sign a contract agreeing to terms
of usage before obtaining access to the laptops.)

We decided to choose Dell for our desktop computers. While SUNY Potsdam is primarily a

We have decided to purchase our projector from TigerDirect because it was less expensive when
purchased from this company than from others. We have chosen the BenQ BP6200 projector
because we wanted a native resolution greater than 800*600. (This model’s resolution was
1024*768.) Since a better resolution means a clearer picture, we wanted the output from the
projector to be as clean and clear as possible. Seeing as how there is a possibility students and
faculty may display images that are bigger then 800*600 we didn’t want these images to look
disproportional on the screen.

We have chosen to recommend the Panasonic Interactive PanaBoard because we feel it
would greatly benefit those students who are working in the workroom. The PanaBoard
allows individuals to write on the surface using specially designed markers. The
information written on the board can be sent to a printer or saved to a computer to use
later. We feel this piece of hardware would be helpful when working in groups. Instead
of everyone having to write down the information discussed, the students can simply use
the interactive board then print a copy for everyone in the group. If students choose to

Why we chose this…
This scanner was affordable and PC compatible. It has a see-through window so that you
can see the location of the document you are scanning while it is inside the scanner. This
is a nice feature because it enables you to know the exact placement of your document.
This particular scanner is quite small so it conserves space.

Why we chose this…
We chose this screen because we wanted a screen that was 10ft*10ft. This screen will
provide a square, glass-beaded surface for an image to be projected upon. Since the
computer screens that are in the labs are square, the image being projected will appear the
same as that being viewed at a workstation. This particular screen was the most cost
effective on the market. We also chose an electrical roll down screen because we have
found that manual screens can easily become damaged making them hard to use.

Server Software
Why we chose this…
In selecting software our philosophy was that we wanted to use open source products….
The quality of the products was very high and the cost savings more then offset any
additional fees needed for either training operators or use of an occasional consultant.
Our plan is to use five rack mounted Linux (Red Hat) servers that are interconnected to a
RAID, a network router, a UPS, patch panel, switches, wireless gateways and also a
Firewall.
1. Boot Servera. This server would use The Network File System Software (NFS) to
provide a fast, seamless interface for sharing files across your specific
network.
b. NIS+ would also be hosted on this server. NIS+ is an improved version of
NIS as it allows for data encryption and also authentication over secure
RPC. NIS+ provides management of all userids, password, and
mail_aliases.
c. For IP addressing we would use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocal
(DHCP). This software assign and keeps track of all IP addresses. The
advantage of this version is that the dynamic aspect allows for and IP
address to be assigned to new machines added to the network without the
administrator having to do it manually.
2. Data Server- We chose MySQL as our database software. It is a standard product
and though there would be a licensing cost for use of the software, installing, and
annual support we believe the $1995.00 would be well spent for the first year.
During that time we would hope that internal support could be developed thus
eliminating the need to paying an annual support fee.
3. Web Servera. Web-Truthfully Apache httpd is the industry standard capable of working
across platforms and is HTTP/1.1 compliant. The software includes full
source code and an unrestrictive license. It is customizable and is actively
being developed and upgraded.

b. FTP-We would host ftp services also on this server. We would use WUFTPD software originally developed at Washington University. This
software would replace the Red Hat FTP daemon. This software is able to
handle all ftp duties on the network.
4. Email Server- Scanmail—This product is very scaleable. It can not only handle
the email server’s duties but additional modules/features can be added to provide
anti-spam and anti-virus protection.
5. Print Server-CUPS is the open source program we chose. It has a web interface,
network printer directory services, encryption support, PPD-based printer drivers
along with many other features that made it a natural choice.

Why we chose this…
We selected these 4-port keystone boxes because they mount on the wall and are
designed to accommodate raceway. With the use of the 4-port boxes, we can run 4 Cat5e
cables down to the computer stations from the main raceway. We will be able to plug in
4 computers to each box. Buying the 4-port boxes was the same price as purchasing 2port boxes, so we will be saving space by installing these boxes. We think that it would
be a good idea for the client to purchase and pay for the installation of one or two extra
boxs in each lab in the event the college wishes to expand the number of computers in
each lab.

Why we chose this…
In order to connect the computers to the keystone boxes, we need to use keystone jacks.
The Cat5e cable that is connected to the patch panel at one end must be connected to the
keystone jack at the other. Once installed, the Cat5e cable from the computer stations
can be plugged into the jacks that are placed inside the boxes to complete a network
connection. Since these jacks are sold individually, we have decided to purchase enough
of each color to allow us to color code the labs.

Why we chose this…
From the patch panel, the Cat5e cable will travel through the ceiling to the computer labs
and offices. Once the cable reaches the rooms, it will need to be concealed as it travels
along the walls to the mount boxes. The Cat5e cable will be run through the raceway that
will be attached to the walls. In the 2 computer labs, we will place the raceway one
above the other along the ceiling in order to accommodate the 12-14 cables that will be
running from the server room along each side of the room. From these thick strips of
raceway, we will run one strip of raceway down towards the floor to the keystone mount
boxes. These pieces of raceway will hold 4 lengths of Cat5e cable.
