slippery surfaces. Look behind and use care when

Read the owner's manual carefully+ Be thoroughly
familiar with the controls and the proper use of the
edger. Know how to stop the edger and disengage the

@ Neverleave the edger with fuel in the fuel tank inside
a building where ignition sources are present such as
water and space heaters, clothesdryers, and thelike.
Allow the engine to cool before placing in any enclosure.
After stdking a foreign object, stopthe engine (motor).
Remove the wire from the spark plug, and keep the
wire away fro m the plug to prevent accidental starting..
Thoroughly inspect the edger for any damage, and
repair the damage before restarting and operating the
edger.
@ lithe edger should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the
engine (motor) and check immediately {orthe cause
Vibration is generaUy a warning of troubte.
@ Stop the blade whenever you leave the operating
position. Also, stop the engine and disconnect the
spark plug wire before unclogging the blade and when
making any repairs, adjustments, or inspections
@ When cteaning, repairing,or inspecting, shuto{{ the
engine and make certain all moving parts have stopped
@ Never attempt to make any adjustments while the
engine is running (except when specitically recommended by the manufacturer).

NOTE: Lower handle should be attached first as it is
difficult to attach lower handle with the wheels on.

Figure 1 shows the edger completely assemb(ed_

Place the lower handle inside the edger lrame (See
Fig. 3) and secure in place with four (4) 5/16-18 hex
head wide flange screws and four (4) 5;/16-18 hex
head Iocknuts (found in parts bag), Hold back on the
lower handle as you tighten the screws,. NOTE:
Locknuts should be on the inside of frame as shown
in Fig. 3.

Attach each rear wheel, as shown, to the edger (See
Fig 2) with a 3/8-t6 x i_390 inch shoulder bolt,
spacer and 3/8-16 hex head jam nut (found in parts
bag).
Reference to the right and left hand side of the edger is
from the operator's position behind the unit.

Place theupper handle on the lower handle (See Fig.
4), aiign upper handle holes with holes in the lower
handle, and secLJrein place With four (4) 5/16-18 x 11/4 inch hex head screws and four (4) 5/16-18 hex
head locknuts (found in parts bag). Locknuts should
be to the inside of the two handles as shown in Fig..4

Insert one end ol the control rod from left to right
through the hole in the clutch lever (See Fig, 4) and
attach with a hair pin (found in the parts bag),
O
Place the clutch lever in the first depth selection-(Figo
4) and insert the other end of the control rod through
the hole in the quill support arm (See Fig. 4)_ Attach
with ha!qoin(found in parts bag),
@ Move the clutch levei" to rearmost (NEUTRALi position ahd !a!ch in. See note below_
NOTE: tf it is difficult to get the clutch lever into NEUTRAL, It may be necessary to loosen the four screws'and
nuts holding the lowerhandles to the frame (See Fig•.5).
Pry up (forward) on the handles onty enough to allow the
clutch le_,erto freely enter the NEUTRAL position.. Retighten nuts and screws° When the clutch lever is in
NEUTRAL the quitl support arm shoiJid be against the
spacer and screw behind it (See Fig. 4 inset),

@ Remove the oil fitl cap (Fig 7A)
e Fill the engine crankcase, pouring slowly Do not
overfill. For approximate capacity see PRODUCT
SPECIFICATIONS on page 3 of this manual
® Reinstall the oil fi!l cap and tighten securely.

Check oil before each use. Add if needed
®
Change oil after the first 2 operating hours and every
25 operating hours thereafter.
AND CAUTION MUST BE USED WHEN
CAUTION: GASOLINE IS FLAMMABLE
HANDLING OR STORING IT. DO NOT
FILL FUEL TANK WHILE EDGER IS RUNNING,
HOT, OR WHEN EDGER IS IN AN ENCLOSED
AREA. KEEP AWAY FROM OPEN FLAME, ELECTRICAL SPARK, AND DO NOT SMOKE WHILE
FILLING THE FUEL TANK. NEVER FILL FUEL
TANK COMPLETELY; BUT FILL THE TANK TO
WITHIN 1/4 - 1/2 INCH FROM THE TOP TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR EXPANSION OF FUEL. ALWAYS FILL FUEL TANK OUTDOORS AND USE A
FUNNEL OR SPOUT TO PREVENT SPILLING.
MAKE SURE 1'O WIPE UP ANY SPILLED FUEL
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE.

SUPPLY OF GASOLINE "tO ASSURE VOLATILITY. GASOLINE IS INTENDED TO BE USED AS A
FUEL FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES;
THEREFORE, DO NOT USE GASOLINE FOR ANY
OTHER PURPOSE. SINCE MANY CHILDREN LIKE
THE SMELL OF GASOLINE, KEEP IT OUT OF
THEIR REACH BECAUSE THE FUMES ARE DANGEROUS TO INHALE, AS WELL AS BEING EXPLOSIVE.

FILL GAS:
Fillthe fuel tank (See Fig. 7A) with clean, fresh,unleaded
grade automotive gasoline_ Be sure that the container
you pour the gasoline from isclean and free from dust or
other foreign particles.. Never use gasoline that may be
stale from long periods of storage in the container.

WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blended
fuels (called gasoho! or using methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids
dudng storage. Acidic gas can damage the fue! system of
an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the
fuel system should be emptied before storage of 30 days
or lor_jer_Drain fuel tank, start engine and let it run until fuel
lines and carburetor are empty_ Use fresh fuel next season. See Storage Instructions for additional information_
Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the
fuel tank or permanent damage may occur

TO START THE ENGINE

full engine speed during normal use
NOTE: The cutting blade speed is controlled by the
engine speed. To reduce the cutting blade speed, push
down on the throttle controllever_To increasethe blade
speed, push the throttle control lever up.

Edging is best performed when conditions are dry. If
the soil is to wet, did becbmes packed in and around
the blade causing premature belt wear and decreased performance

If dirt does become packed around the blade, stop
the engine, remove the spark plug wire, and remove
the packed debris before continuing to edge.

If very deep edging is required, we recommend that
a shallow cut be made first,then cuts at greater depth
until the desired depth is obtained_

Uniform edging can be performed when the blade
guide rides on and against the surface which you are
edging
@ Edging can be Customized by varying the number of
passes and by the distance your blade is from the
surface you are edging
O To stop the engine, make sure the clutchlever is all
the way back (or up) and move the throttle control
lever to the STOP position..

NOTE: Although multiwiscosity oils (5W30, 10W30, etc.)
improve starting in cold weather, these multi-viscosity oils
will result in increasedoil consumption when used above
32°F. Check your engine oil level more frequently to avoid
possible engine damage from runninglow on oil
Apply light machine oil after each 25 hours of use to
all moving parts, particularly the wheels.
ENGINE
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
The oil in the crankcase must be changed after the
first 2 hours of operation and alter each 25 hours of
use thereafter.
NOTE: If the edger is being used In sandy or dusty
areas, change the oll more frequently to prevent
premature engine wear.

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug

Remove the oil drain plug (See Fig 8) and drain the
oil into a fiat pan..

After draining all the oil, reinstall the oil drain plug
securely.
NOTE: The oil wilt drain more freely when the engine is
warm

SPARK PLUG
To instalta new air filter, do the following:
e
Disconnectthe spark plug wire from the spark plug.
e
Turn the cover (See Fig. 9) to the left (counterclockwise) and remove the cover and the air filter from the
flanger
Clean the spark plug and =reset the gap periodically.
Clean the area around the spark plug base, before
removal, to prevent dirt _[om entering into the engine.
Replace the spark plug if the electrodes are pitted or
burned or ifthe porcelain is cracked. Clean the spark plug
by carefully scraping the electrodes (do not sand blast or
use a wire brush). Be sure the spark plug isclean and free
of foreign material. Check the electrodes gap with a wire
feeler gauge and reset to ,,035 if necessary. If a new
spark plug isneeded, refer to the Engine Operation and
Maintenance manual for the proper replacement spark
plug
@ Discard the air filter.

Clean the cover and the flange thoroughly_
Insert the new air filter into the cover.
@ Push the cover firmly against the flange and turn it to
the right (clockwise) as far as it wilt go (See Fig,,9. Be
sure the retainers are locked around the flange,

Reconnect fhe spark plug wire_
Before reinstalling the spark plug, coat the threads lightly
with graphite or light oil to insure easy removal° Tighlen
the spark plug lirmly into the engine,, If a torque wrench
is available, torque the spark plug to 15 foot- pounds_

@ Pull the clutch lever back (or up) to release the
tension from the belt.

Remove the two top screws from the engine pulley
cover (See Fig° 10) and.remove the cover.

' Remove the front screw securing the belt guide
(See Fig.. t0) to the engine. Then loosen the rear
screw and swing the belt guide away from the bell

Remove the belt from the engine and quill assembly
pulleys and install the new belt.

ad_sting screw in until the engine speed or sound,
a_ers. Adiust the screw old until the engine speed
sound alters, Note the difference between the two
limits and set the screw in the middle of the range.

If the enginetends to stall under Ioador not accelerate
fromlow speed to h_ghspeed properly, adjust the high
speed screw out in 1/8 turn increments until the
problem is resolved.,

MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE FORTHE
NEXT SEASON.

To remove gasoline, run the engine until the tank is
empty and the engine stops.,
O
if youdo not wantto remove gasbline, a fuel stabilizer
(such as Sears Craftsman fuel stabilizer No+33500)
may be added to any gasoline left in the tank to
minimize gum deposits and acids, If the tank is
almost empty, mix stabilizer with fresh gasoline in a
separate container and add some to the tank+ALWAYS FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON STABILIZER
CONTAINER. THEN RUN ENGINE AT LEAST 10
MINUTES AFTER STABILIZER IS ADDED TO
ALLOW MIXTURE TO REACH CARBURETOR.
STORE EDGER IN A SAFE PLACE. SEE WARNING ABOVE.

Store the edger in the wheels-down, operating position. If the edger is stored in any other position, oil
from the crankcase could enter the cylinder, causlng
a service problem.
You can keep your engine in good operating condition during storage by:

un compuesto especial, S| se desgasta o se qutebra la correa

USE UN SUBSTmJTO.

Tire ta palanca del embrague hacta atr&s (o arras) pars
soltar ta tansi6n de la cortes.

delantera (yea la Fig, 11),

Remueva ta correa de tas poteas del conjunto del cuerpo
y del motor • Instate una cortes nueva,

lnst_e y asegure la protecdSn de la cortes delantera,

Asegure la guts de la cortes qua se solt6 anterlorrnenteo
•
Vuetva a instalar lacubierta de la poles del motor y vuelva
a conectar-el alambra de la bujfa,

Para camblar la cuchllla, haga Io slgutente:

Desconecte elatambre de la bujia.

Remueva la tuema de saguddad (vea la Fig. 12) que
asegum la cuchi!taal eje de impulsi6n.

Remueva la cuchilla.
e
lnstaJe la cuchilla nueva, vuelva a instalar la tuerca de
seguridad. Apriete latuerca en forma segura.
e
Vuelva a conectar el alambre de la bujfa_

PARA AJUSTAR EL CARBURADOR
SUJECION
El cazburador (V6ase Fig. 13) ha sido preconfigurado en la
f_tbrica y los reajustes no deberlan ser necesartos, Sin embargo,si el carbura_fordehecho necesitaser a!ustad0' proceda
de la manera stguiente:

Cferre el tomillo de ajuste de alta velocidad a mano.
e
No io apriete en exceso.
e
Luego dbra!o 1-114 a 1-1/2 vueltas.
e
Arrahque el motor y d6jelo calentar.
e
Coloque el control de la aceleraci6n en MARCHA (RUN).,
Ajuste el tomil]o de ajuste de alta velocldad hacla adentro
hasta que la vetocidad del motor 0 el sonido se alte_ao
Ajuste el torhillo hacla afuera hasta que el sonidode la
velocidad del motor se altera_ Note la d_ferencia entre los
dos I|mites y fije el tomillo an ta mitad de ese tango.

SI el motor tiende a apagarse bajo carga o no acelerar
desde ia velocidad baja a ta a]ta apropiadamente,ajuste el
tomilJode atta velockfad en tncrementosde 118de vuelta
hasta que el problema se resuelva..

Lubdcar et &tea del pist6nicilindro. Esto se puodo hacer
removiendo la buj[a primero y roctando aceite de motor
limpio en elagujerodelabujia. Luegoc_ibratocon untrapo
para absorber el roc[o del aceiteo Luego, rote el motor
tirando el arrancador dos otresveces. Finalmente, vuelva
a instatar fa bujia y adjunte el alambre de _sta,,
