New R1234yf Servicing Requirements
Ford Motor Company will begin phasing in the new refrigerant, “R1234yf”, into our U.S. vehicle lineup.
This new refrigerant has already been implemented by several other OEMs both in the U.S. and Europe,
including Ford, and is already implemented in the Transit, Mustang and Edge in Europe. It obtains similar
vent temperatures as R134a systems and has similar system pressures.
Dealerships can expect to receive R1234yf equipped vehicles by the end of April 2016.
The main reason for this change is due to its strong environmental benefits.

We are expecting high volume orders over the
next several months. We recommend that
Dealerships purchase the needed equipment
ASAP so the equipment is on-hand
upon vehicle arrival.

REFRIGERANT
R1234yf Equipment Requirements
Service Machine: R1234yf systems use a completely
different service port fitting to prevent contamination
between different refrigerants which is crucial to
maintain proper A/C operation. A new R1234yf service
machine must be used when servicing the refrigerant.
Rotunda currently offers two machines that have passed
our rigorous real-world testing. These machines are:
• Robinair “023-AC1234-6” (see page 4)
• Flo Dynamics “199-FFX1234” (see page 6)
Unique Features: R1234yf service machines perform
certain procedures and functions that were either
optional or didn’t exist with R134a machines. For this
reason, servicing R1234yf is expected to take slightly
longer than with previous refrigerants. Please refer to SAE
standard J2843 for more details on machine changes,
here are just a few highlights:
•R
1234yf machines will include an integrated refrigerant
identifier which simplifies the already existing
identification process
•R
1234yf machines serve as a “Hybrid Ready” A/C
machine. This means that they contain a hose flush
function and will NOT perform automatic oil injection
•E
ach machine will perform a pre-charge vacuum decay
and a 15% charge leak test. This is a mandatory test per
the SAE standard
Oil Injectors: Unique service ports and required
manual oil injection will require the use of two oil
injectors designed specifically for R1234yf ports. One
injector will be used for PAG oil (non-Hybrid vehicles) and
the other injector for POE oil (Hybrid/EV).
Leak Detectors: Certified R1234yf leak detectors are
available through Rotunda. These are required to meet
SAE standard “J2913”. All of these detectors work with
both R1234yf and R134a systems. Previously purchased
versions of these leak detectors will work with both
refrigerants.
Training: The web-based training course “35S04W0”
will be updated in the near future with a new R1234yf
training section. Completion of this section within the
new course 35S04W1 will be required to maintain Climate
Control certification. Monitor STARS for release updates.
