Top Dead Center is the upper most point the piston can ever reach. Timing is measured from this point. Advancing the timing is when you set the spark to happen before TDC as the piston is on it’s way up. This is measured in degrees. Retarding the timing is a phrase used to explain reducing the number of degrees before TDC that the spark happens. 40
