Certificate Storage Solutions My History
Are you serious about preserving your past?
Are you having difficulty storing certificates in ordinary A4 folders? Do you have concerns about the long
term storage of old photographs? Do you know the life expectancy of the paper you are printing on? These
are just some of the concerns our customers have about preserving their research for their own descendants.
Did you know that even storing data on CDs can be problematic as these can deteriorate over time and once
corruption begins whole photographs and sections of data can be lost forever. Serious archivists still prefer to
see printed documents as these have been proven to last hundreds of years if printed out on acid free paper and
stored carefully.
We stock the ‘Parkinson’ brand of archive binders, albums and hold-alls, recognised for its quality for many years
by archivists in libraries and museums.

My History Certificate Storage Solutions (Traditional)
Traditional Certificate Storage
The certificate folders on this page and on page 6 are for the old original traditional certificates that are much longer
than an A4 sheet. Certificates fit in the pockets without the need for folds and may be placed back to back with a
white acid-free certificate card in between thus allowing two documents per pocket.
If all your certificates are of the modern A4 landscape type then you will only need the A4 landscape binders on p7.
Deluxe Certificate Binder
A quality binder for storing those awkward shaped marriage and birth certificates without having to resort to
folds and creases. This padded binder looks good and feels good. Will hold up to 40 pockets allowing archival
storage of 80 certificates if inserted back to back in the pockets. The PVC binder lays flat when open and has a
high quality 4 ring mechanism plus a transparent pocket on the spine.
Dimensions 17½ x 10¾ ins (44.5 x 27cm) approx.

TIP: What order should
documents go into a folder?
TIP: Where may certificates
be ordered from?
There is no right or wrong way for this but many
genealogists use the divider sets to divide up their
documents by family name. Within a name you
could file a marriage certificate followed by the birth
certificates of any children and the death certificates
of the parent followed by the marriages of children
and their families etc. It is probably more interesting
to file the oldest documents first followed by more
recent additions towards the back of the binder.
Once you have the name and location of a birth,
death or marriage as well as the quarter year in which
it happened then you will need to order from the
relevant local registrar or from the General Register
Office (GRO) at Southport.

My History Photo Albums & A4 Storage Solutions
Storing Old Photographs
There are two aspects to storing photographs.
1) How best to store the originals. 2) How best
to pass copies of them on to various descendents. (Of
course one lucky descendent will get the originals).
From an archiving perspective it is important that your
old photos are stored to prolong their life. Scanning
them will allow you to present them in family tree
charts, reports or dedicated photograph albums that
may be duplicated as many times as you wish.
We do not recommend encapsulating photos
in plastic using a laminating machine or the use of
albums with stick down plastic coverings. This can be
harmful to photographs even in the short term.
Photograph A4 Hold-All
The Photo Hold-All is a secure way to store your family
history photos and other similar documents. Holds A4
portrait or landscape pockets. Carry your photos around
safely without worrying about losing anything. This
briefcase style case is not only a good way to display
your family history but is also excellent for transporting
by car or public transport due to its robustness.
The construction and material also help to keep out
light that can damage your precious photographs.

up to an A3 landscape layout. This can be particularly useful when you wish to mix the A4 photo pocket pages
with A3 pockets and certificate pockets.

sets of dividers without them protruding out beyond the cover. The pockets are made of a thin archive safe
material that allows more pockets per binder than our thicker A4 pockets on page 7.

1911 Census
Information
The 1911 census for England and
Wales was taken on the night of
Sunday 2 April 1911. The census
started to be available for viewing
during January 2009 with a limited
number of counties being listed. This
was partly to avoid a huge rush of
users overloading the system on day
one of the launch but may also be
because some counties are still to be
finished and loaded into the system.
1911 is the first year that the actual
householders return is available rather
14
Order Line 01709 586758
than the enumerators transcribed
summaries that we have all been
used to when viewing an older
census. This means that we get the
chance to see the return handwritten
by our own ancestors which of course
makes it very likely that the names
and data should be very accurate
(depending of course on the integrity
of the person filling it in).
In order to view the census returns
you will need to purchase FindMyPast
units, either by buying vouchers from
My History or on the 1911 website.
The units may be used on either the
1911 website or at FindMyPast.
Please visit our website for more
information.
Subscribers to FindMyPast which is
associated with the 1911 site will
not be able to use their subscriptions
to view the returns on the new site.
We do not know what date in the
future when the 1911 census will
be available for unlimited viewing by
subscription or whether indeed it will
eventually be available to subscribers
of Ancestry.co.uk
Please see page 42 for full details on
buying vouchers and units to view the
1911 Census.

Bookmaking
Information
Some family tree software
packages will allow you to set
up a series of reports and charts
in the form of book pages. The
software will allow you to write
a title page and automatically
create a contents page and an
index. It also numbers all the pages
thus making a complete work
for publication and distribution
to other family members. Whilst
we are convinced at My History
that many younger members of
the family will be happy to receive
your work in digital format by
way of a website on CD or a
copy of your data file, we also
believe that there is no better way
of preserving a link to the past
with the production of a printed
document. This is because we
believe it is still the most accessible
way to present information to a
wide audience and will never be
reliant on any technology other
than the quality of the paper used.
The information presented does
not have to be every detail from
your tree and at the very least will
provide an introduction to the
family archive encouraging our
inquisitive descendants to access
the extra data locked away in a
digital format.
Two of the most popular packages
at the moment for producing
books are Family Tree maker and
RootsMagic. Family Historian
is also an excellent program at
producing reports but it does not
yet have the content and indexing
facility of the above.

My History Choosing Family Tree Software
Choosing Family Tree
Software
If you’re still using pen and paper
to draw your family tree diagrams
then you may be thinking about
how you can easily produce up-todate diagrams and reports. Using
a good family tree program will
produce excellent printed results
and it will also help you keep track
of all your family information and
reduce the amount of paper work
you need to keep.
If you are already using an online
family tree website such as
GenesReunited or Ancestry, you
may be getting concerned about
privacy, data security and you may
want to store more information
against your ancestors than they
give you room for. The online sites
only produce very basic charts and
little or no text reports. In addition
they may be costing you money to
keep online each year. The good
news is that online sites also allow
GEDCOM transfer files (see below)
for you to transfer your family tree
on to your own PC where your data
remains private, secure and free.
When choosing software consider
the following points:
Data Transfer and Online Family
Trees
Most software (even the old ones
sold many years ago) will produce
an output file in GEDCOM format
which will allow transfer of family
tree data. This is a relatively
straightforward task and should not
present many problems to users of
family tree software.
What do you want to achieve?
Do you just want to produce very
basic diagrams or do you want to
have control over how the diagrams
look and what information is
printed on them. Consider also
how much detail you want to store
18
Order Line 01709 586758
against your ancestors. You may
want to store a lot more detail
than usual if you come across an
ancestor who did something good
(or bad)!
Who is going to see the results?
Consider whether printed output
is important or are your relatives
likely to want to view your research
in the form of a personal family
website or on a CD.
Ease of data input and manuals.
It’s important that you find
inputting the data an easy task.
Check if a printed manual comes
with your program and is a further
comprehensive manual supplied
on the installation disc for printing
out if you prefer. All the modern
programs have on-screen help
which in most cases is good.
Researching your tree.
If you want automatic links to
online databases check that the
program you are buying will do
this and that it does connect to the
website you want to use.
Check the types of chart a
program will produce.
If producing charts is important
to you then check out the chart
capability of a program to suit your
own preferences before purchasing.
See the bottom of page 19 for
basic examples of chart layouts. If
you want lots of control on how
the chart looks and you wish to add
extra pictures and notes to a chart,
then you will need to consider one
of our more detailed programs such
as Family Historian.
Reports.
Check out if the software will
include your notes and present
your family history research in a
logical format. Programs like Family
Tree Maker, Family Historian and
Reunion (Mac) are all excellent at
producing good quality reports in a
book format.
Photographs and other multimedia.
All new software will store pictures
and other types of media file.
However check out the additional
features of Family Historian where
you may select individuals from
group photos and link parts of a
picture to individuals in your tree.
Sources and repositories.
Make sure the program you are
considering has ample scope for
linking sources to your facts so that
you don’t waste time at a future
date trying to find the information
again.
How secure is your data?
Make sure you understand how
to back-up your data in case of
computer failure, burglary or other
types of disaster. Give your relatives
copies of charts and reports or a
regular basis.
Finally!
Who is going to inherit your
research? Remember this is a family
heirloom you are producing. Those
charts and reports will be kept and
passed on to future generations.
Print everything out onto good
quality acid-free-paper and make
sure it is presented well in folders
and binders. Your descendants are
more likely to take greater care of
this than just another computer file
on a CD or memory stick.
A much more comprehensive
version of this article appears in the
Family and Local History Handbook
which may be bought on page
18 of this catalogue. An extensive

My History Family Tree Software
Family Historian v4 (2009)
Family Historian is an easy to use, comprehensive professional family tree
program that has some of the most modern features anyone could wish for.
One of its unique facilities is the way parts of a group photograph may be
linked to different individuals in the tree. Though all-embracing, this 100%
British software also makes a good program for beginners as well as advanced
genealogists due to its easy to understand user screens.
New Focus Screen
This new window has made Family Historian
much easier to use allowing the user to navigate
up and down their tree with ease.
Four different tabs on the focus screen allow
you to view:i) Spouses and Children of particular individual,
ii) Parents and Siblings of an individual,
iii) Ancestors and
iv) Descendants
The right hand panel for data entry is
customisable allowing the user to decide what
fields appear on screen.
Charts, Diagrams and Smart Trees
Instantly create Ancestor, Descendant, Hourglass and
Everyone diagrams, as well as Family Historian's unique
All Relatives diagrams.
Diagrams are tightly integrated and used for browsing,
exploring and editing – as well as for creating superb wall
charts. All diagrams are fully adjustable and images of
individuals are easily included. You may also add as many
extra images and additional text boxes as required.
Smart Trees give you great control over your charts.
Family Historian’s Smart Trees give you unprecedented control over chart
layout. Hide, show, move, re-size and re-order boxes – trees will automatically
adjust themselves to reflect your changes. To expand or close any branch on a
diagram, one button click will make the diagram automatically adjust. Smart
Trees give you absolute control over your charts.
Share your research
Family Historian lets you share your research with others using not just charts
but also websites, family tree CDs, reports and more...
Creating websites is easy with
the website wizard.

Pictures and multimedia
With Family Historian, not only can you add as many
pictures as you like for each person, you can also add
a picture once and then link it to each person in the
picture.
You can even link each person to their own face in the
picture, and show just faces in diagrams without having
to ‘crop’ your pictures. Family Historian is the only
Windows family tree application that supports this –
an essential feature if you wish to work with pictures.
You can also add sounds, video and other kind of
multimedia.
Link each person to their own face in any picture
Other great features
100% GEDCOM - the universal standard format for
shared genealogical data, but applications vary in how
well they support it. Family Historian is unique in being
100% GEDCOM compatible, meaning that it can save
all of its data to the GEDCOM format and it will load
all records and fields from a GEDCOM file – including
other applications’ extensions to GEDCOM.
Queries - allow you to extract whatever data you want
from your family tree file. For example, you could use
a query to find out the ages at death of a person’s
ancestors in the 19th Century, or to find out what boys’
names have been used by a given person’s descendants.
Family Historian comes with 34 standard queries,
but you can easily create your own, to get whatever
information you want from your own data.
Merge/compare - Only Family Historian lets you
compare any two GEDCOM files side-by-side so that
you can see where and how they differ, and how they
will end up if you merge them – before you commit
yourself to merging anything. You have complete
control and you can see exactly which records will be
updated and which will be unaffected.
Family Historian’s support for Sources is Second
to None – letting you keep detailed records of the
sources of your information, and the location of these
source documents (repositories). You can even store
images of sources (e.g. scanned images of documents).
Documentation - Family Historian comes with a
48-page booklet to get you started. A full User Manual
is included on the CD, which can be printed off.

The Master Genealogist (or “TMG”) v7 is the gold
standard in family history software. Used by novices

USB Memory Sticks & Hard Drives My History
Backing Up Your Data Files
Using Memory Sticks for Data Storage
This has got to be the best method of backing up
your family history. It is so easy to use and the ample
storage capacity means that you will be able to
store all those valuable images of family, certificates
and even those census returns you have been
painstakingly downloading off the internet.
Transfer your data between PCs, Notebooks and
MACs. Perfect for moving files between home, office
and library. You can move, save, copy, delete and run
files from the USB Drive in the same way you would
from your PC’s hard drive.
Remember floppy discs? Well a 4GB USB memory
stick holds more data than 3000 floppies or almost
as much as 6 CDs. However the real difference is the
ease of use. Just plug it in and hey presto you have
the convenience of a hard drive. Create directories
and save files to it just like you do on your ‘C’ drive.
Overwrite or delete in just the same way.
TIP: If you use a laptop as well as a desktop PC then
we recommend keeping your main file and images on
this USB drive so that it is available for use on either
computer. Use your computers to hold back ups after
each session working on your family history.
TIP: Just 1GB will hold 250 scans at 4mb. A typical
family tree without any photographs embedded is
usually less than 1mb.
External
Hard
Drives
On our
website
we have a
selection of
external hard
drives that just
plug into the
USB socket
on the side of your laptop or your desktop PC. As
well as offering huge amounts of extra storage an
external drive provides an excellent form of backup
and security in the event of your C: drive failing. Due
to the rapidly increasing capacities we recommend
visiting our website www.my-history.co.uk for upto-date specifications and prices.

My History Large Format Chart Printing
We can provide all levels of service for printing your
family tree chart. If you have your chart already
designed in a family tree program then all you need to
do is create a PDF file, make a note of its dimensions
and send that to us for printing on paper or canvas.
If you need help with your chart or you just want to
send us a data file from your favourite program or
online tree then for a small extra charge we will be
happy to convert that into a chart for you. Please see
the bottom of page 33.
We understand how you are going to use your chart.
It is going to be unrolled and re-rolled many times
during its life so we will print your chart on a good
quality acid-free paper that is thicker than average
and if that isn't enough you may elect to have your
chart printed on an even heavier paper or canvas for
a small extra charge. Your chart will be packaged in a
cardboard tube with plastic end caps so that you have
a means of carrying it around and storing it without it
getting too battered over the years.
Our website www.my-history.co.uk has lots of
hints and tips to help you with your chart and even
includes help sheets which you may download for
your favourite family tree software or online tree
service. There is also a conversion page that allows
you to calculate the size of chart to order based on
the number of A4 pages your program has calculated
for your chart.
Paper Weights - are quoted as grams per square
metre (gsm). Ordinary printer paper is usually 80 gsm.
Proofing Service – If you’ve never had a chart
printed before on wide format paper then it can be
quite daunting to spend lots of money on a high
quality rolled chart. That’s why we have introduced
our chart proofing service that allows you to get
a black and white folded proof copy for a fraction
of the cost of a standard chart. Furthermore our
proofing paper is recycled and acid-free. Please see
prices below.

recent relatives include photographs as well.
Large Format Chart Printing My History
Ink
We insist on original manufacturers ink for our
printing service as these have proven to be fade
resistant, better quality and have more colours when
compared to cheaper alternative inks.
Advantages of canvas; Easy to roll, Will not tear,
Acid free, Crease resistant, High Quality Finish,
Additions may be added at a future date using an
acid-free pen and if you spill anything on it, it has a
Wipe clean surface.
Why not have Your Chart Printed on Canvas
Our synthetic canvas is an excellent material for
charts as it is extremely durable and the result is just
as good as printing on paper. Before we used the
canvas we thought that some of the detail such as
text and images would be difficult to read or blurred
but in actual fact it is excellent and possibly better
than smooth paper as it does not reflect the light. We
guarantee that you will not be disappointed with this
material.
Discounts
Why not take advantage of our discounts for multiple
copies of your chart so that you may finally share
your hard labours with some of your relatives. They
make excellent Christmas, Birthday and Anniversary
presents. If you order more than one print of a single
size & design then we are able to offer the following
discounts:
2 charts - 20%
3 Charts - 30%
4 Charts - 40%
8 Charts - 45%
You may mix different weights of medium and
heavy paper for the same print order to reach the
above discounts but the canvas prints are priced and
discounted separately.

My History Data CDs
Trade Directories
On our website you will find
a growing range of trade
directories on CD covering
many counties and towns
of the UK. They are a sort
of mix of yellow pages
and residential telephone
directories that we have
today. Some businesses even
took display space on some
of the pages.
The directories can be
incredibly useful in locating
households in both rural
areas and towns as they
often include both a
residential address and
a business address for
people in business including
professionals from shoe
makers to solicitors and
landlords of pubs, beer
houses and Inns. They often
also have a huge amount of
extra information such as;
details of towns and villages,
times of coaches and delivery
services etc. Whilst this
won’t always help you find
a family member it can assist
you with understanding
what a place was like when
your ancestor lived there.
This information can often
be added to your family
history to make it a more
interesting read.

Data CDs My History
National Burial Index
This second edition released August 2004 includes the 5.4 million
burials from the first edition plus a further 7.7m to bring the
total to over 13m records. There are even more counties (see
list below) and parishes registers covered for England and Wales
from 1538 onwards. It is still not a complete index to all burials,
but represents an enormous effort by Family History Societies and
Groups to make available a large amount of information easily
searchable in your own home. The National Burial Index, known
as the NBI, is quality British data at an affordable price.
This is an index transcribed by family historians in the locality of
the original records and is therefore considered to be of very high
quality.
Use with PC operating systems only.
Not suitable for Mac
What will you find out if an ancestor burial is on the CD?

Cassini Past
& Present Maps
Each Cassini Past & Present map is
centred on a city or town and covers
an area of 15km x 15km using four
Ordnance Survey mapping series to
cover four different periods: the mid
19th century, the late 19th century,
We strongly recommend visiting our
website to check the places covered by
the maps before ordering as many of
them cover two or more places. The 64
maps of the ‘Past and Present’ series
covers the following 114 towns or cites:
Baldock, Bedworth, Birmingham,
Blackburn, Bolton, Bourne End,
Bournemouth, Bradford, Brighton,
Bristol, Bromsgrove, Caerphilly,
Cambridge, Cannock, Canterbury,
Cardiff, Chatham, Cheltenham,
Chester, Christchurch, Coventry,

Old Series
The Cassini Old Series
based on the Old
Ordnance Survey’s one
inch to the mile (Old
Series) maps are good
for studying larger areas
and although not as
detailed as the Alan
Godfrey range they will
give a good idea of the
size of communities
between 1805 and 1874
which is the period in
which these maps were
published. They will also
reveal a much clearer
picture of the main
routes for travellers at
the time compared to
the modern maps of
today. This was the first
accurate national survey,
and records a time of
momentous transition
from an agrarian to an
industrialised society.

the1920s and the present-day. All
four maps cover exactly the same
area. Historical notes, details of the
original maps used and web-links

sources of information are also
provided.

My History Historical Maps for Genealogists
Printed Maps or Maps on CD
A printed map is always preferable
to one on screen as it is so much
easier to interpret when the whole
thing is laid out in front of you
on paper. However due to the
scarcity and diversity of some older
maps it makes economic sense to
include them in large numbers on
CDs. There is little or no overlap
between the printed ranges and
the ones included on the CDs.
We stock 3 different ranges of
printed maps all of which can be
useful to the family historian. The
Alan Godfrey Maps are particularly
useful for genealogists as they
nearly always show individual
homes even when they form part
of a terrace as in the example on
Page 39.

Historical Maps for Genealogists My History
Alan Godfrey Maps
The Alan Godfrey Maps are ideal
for genealogists to use as they
nearly always show individual
homes even when they form part
of a terrace as in the example
(right). They cover only about a
square mile, so even a small town
may be covered by several maps.
There are over 2000 maps in the
range and there are still many
more to be printed to cover the
areas of the country that had the
most dense population around
1900. These maps are considered
to be representative of places
during the 1800’s as street
layouts had to a great extent
remained unchanged up to
the time this range was first
published.
It would need a separate
catalogue to list all of the
available maps from this
range. Below we give you an
idea of the number of maps
already reprinted for each county.
The maps that are available cover
the areas of highest population in
each county so please don’t expect
to find many small towns and

Printing Service
Are you fed up with writing up
or printing charts onto lots of A4
and then taping them all together
or do you need some charts for a
special occasion that not only look
good but will become a family
heirloom in years to come.
We have teamed up with a
leading wide format printer who is
able to print your charts on paper
from a roll up to 42 inches wide
and almost as along as you like up
to about 50 yards. The charts are
printed in colour with as much or
as little information as you require
about your relatives and displaying
photographs of individuals.
We have three levels of service.
You may supply us with a
handwritten chart and we will
arrange for it to be entered
onto a computer and laid out in
whatever style/format you choose.
Alternatively you may supply a file
from your favourite family tree
program and we
will format the chart and print
it out. Finally if you know
exactly how you want the chart
printed, we will be happy to just
print the finished chart file you
send us.

printing service please see pages

My History Searching for your Ancestors Online
Introduction
There are some sites on the internet
where you may search for your
ancestors without being charged.
For a full list of these please see the
right-hand side bar of our home
page at
www.my-history.co.uk
Other sites such as Find My Past,
Ancestry and the 1911 census
charge for viewing their records,
not only because of the high cost
of scanning them but also because
they are investing in scanning and
subscribing even more records.
Imagine what it would be like if we
could just call up a list of everyone
who had been baptised in a parish
since 1538. You may view via
‘subscription’ or ‘pay-per-view’
credits.
For a comparison of charges and
records available please visit our
website. Alternatively we sell payper-view vouchers for three of the
most popular sites and these are
approximately £5-6 each.
