As the school year draws to a close, I want to thank all of you for the support you have given the staff and faculty. Our children benefit the most when school and home work together;
however, our work is not quite done. Please look over the enclosed calendar and note the following:

In May, we will be conducting the Virginia SOL testing. Please be sure that your student
is well rested and prepared for the test. We ask that you schedule students’ appointments
so that the testing environment is not interrupted. If you have any questions regarding
the tests or the schedule, please contact your grade level counselor.

We have several special events planned for students in the final weeks of school. These
events are designed to celebrate success and to motivate students to stay focused on academics and make good choices. Each grade has planned different events and activities
including a dance for 7 th and 8th graders, various field trips, and field day activities. Students have been informed that their participation depends on being appropriately behaved
and working hard in their classes in the weeks preceding these events. We appreciate your
support in helping us to maintain our students’ focus on success in school as we countdown to the end of the year.

Virginia state law requires all rising 6th graders to receive the DTAP booster shot before
entering school in August. We will be offering a free shot clinic on June 2, during the
school day. If you choose to have your 5 th grade student participate, required paper work
will be sent home towards the end of May to be completed and returned.

Summer school will begin on July 7. If you are interested in having your student participate, please submit your registration form immediately.

This summer the DMMS library will be open on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00
pm beginning June 25. Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are welcome to come to the
library and check-out books. There will be informal book discussions and students will be
able to use the computers and access the Internet.

Positive Parenting Tips for Summer

For 180 days a year, school administrators,
teachers, school counselors and other staff
members work with students on how to express their feelings in appropriate ways, how
to deal with their anger and how to cope with
stressful situations. But what happens when
school is not in session, especially during the
extended summer break? As a parent, you are
the most influential person in your children’s
lives, and how you work through family issues can have a positive influence on behavior throughout the family as well as the
school. Following are some parenting tips to

AND our new Jewelry Sale.
Over 50 members and parent volunteers
worked the Kiwanis Spring Pancake Day
held April 5th. With smiles on their faces
they set tables, cleared tables, served sausage, served drinks and learned how great
volunteering can feel. At their shift’s end
they could eat as many PANCAKES as
they wanted.

DMMS Students Pave the Way With Tile Murals
Students in grades 5 through 8 at Daniel
Morgan Middle School have been busy beautifying the hallways with large scale tile murals
that exist as permanent testament to their
creativity. Through a collaborative effort with
visual artist Beryl Solla and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the murals have been expanding over the walls outside the school's
auditorium over the past several years. The
initial murals flank the doors of the auditorium; subsequent murals have grown to wrap
around the large, previously empty corridor.
DMMS administration and staff are extremely
supportive of the project and hope it will continue until the space is completely wrapped in
murals.
Beryl Solla, professor of art at Piedmont Virginia Community College, works with groups of
students to first develop a concept for the artwork, and then guide them through the entire
mural process from start to finish. The murals
reflect the community of DMMS as well as the
surrounding community of Winchester. The
images chosen by the students include apples,
music notes, footballs, tacos, and just about
everything in between. The murals are active,
vibrant, and diverse - a fitting reflection of the
many students who had a hand in creating
them!

2014 Summer Programs for
Rising 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
Take the boredom out of summer by taking a class at Daniel Morgan Middle School! Students can
choose from a range of classes that provide extra help or enrichment.
All summer sessions take place between July 7 and 25, in 1 week, 3 week, and 2 day sessions. The
students attend from 8:15 to 12:15 pm. Bus transportation is provided for students who do not live
within walking distance.

5th Grade Published Writers
Congratulations to our fifth grade published writers! Recently, fifth grade students participated in writing break out
groups. Students in Ms. Studebaker’s
writing break out session were challenged with creating an amazing adventure story. These adventure stories were
then submitted to Green Screen Adven-
tures for a writing competition.
Green Screen Adventures selects
winners to be published on their website. First place winners receive
the honor of their story being made
in to a short online episode. This year

The Forensics Competition this
year at Daniel Morgan has been
exceptional (despite weather interruptions). Many people made this

A medida que el año escolar llega a su fin, quiero agradecer a todos ustedes por el apoyo que le han
dado al personal. Nuestros niños se benefician más cuando la escuela y el hogar trabajan juntos. Sin

Consejos Positivos para Padres durante el Verano

"¿Cuál es la regla?" Y la respuesta es clara.

Los alumnos hacen camino con los murales de cerámica
Los estudiantes de los grados 5 al 8 han
estado embelleciendo los pasillos con murales
de azulejos de gran escala que existen como
testimonio permanente de su creatividad. A
través de un esfuerzo de colaboración con el
artista visual Beryl Solla y el Museo de Bellas
Artes de Virginia, los murales se han expandido en los muros exteriores del auditorio de la
escuela. Los murales iniciales flanquean las
puertas del auditorio; los murales posteriores
han crecido por el gran corredor, previamente
vacío. La administración y el personal de la
escuela son un gran apoyo en este proyecto y
esperan que continúe hasta que el espacio está
completamente envuelto en murales.
Beryl Solla, profesor de arte en Piedmont
Virginia Community College, trabaja con grupos de estudiantes para desarrollar primero un
concepto de la obra de arte, y luego guiarlos a
través de todo el proceso de principio a fin. Los
murales reflejan la comunidad de DMMS así
como la comunidad de los alrededores de Winchester. Las imágenes elegidas por los estudiantes incluyen manzanas, notas musicales, balones
de fútbol, tacos, y más. Los murales son activos,
vibrantes, y diversos -un fiel reflejo de la creación que tienen los alumnos.

Programas de verano 2014
Los futuros alumnos de quinto, sexto, séptimo, y octavo grado pueden
sacarle provecho al verano y tomar una clase en Daniel Morgan. Los estudiantes pueden elegir entre una variedad de clases que proporcionan ayuda o enriquecimiento extra.
Todas las sesiones de verano se llevan a cabo entre el 7 y 25 de julio, en 1 semana, 3 semanas, y 2
sesiones diarias. Los estudiantes asisten de 08:15 a 12:15p.m. Se proporciona transporte de autobús
para los estudiantes que no viven a poca distancia.

Felicitaciones a nuestros escritores
publicados de quinto grado. Recientemente, los estudiantes de quinto grado
participaron en una redacción. Los estudiantes de la Sra. Studebaker fueron desafiados con la creación de una historia
de aventuras increíbles. Estas historias de
aventuras se presentaron luego en un
concurso de escritura. Green Screen
selecciona a los ganadores que se
publicarán en su página web. Los
ganadores del primer lugar recibirán
el honor de que su historia se realice
en un corto episodio en línea. Este
