Calendar 2 Positive Parenting Tips for Summer 3 Builders Club, Summer Fun 4 DMMS Murals, 5 As the school year draws to a close, I want to thank all of you for the support you have given the staff and faculty. Our children benefit the most when school and home work together; however, our work is not quite done. Please look over the enclosed calendar and note the following: In May, we will be conducting the Virginia SOL testing. Please be sure that your student is well rested and prepared for the test. We ask that you schedule students’ appointments so that the testing environment is not interrupted. If you have any questions regarding the tests or the schedule, please contact your grade level counselor. We have several special events planned for students in the final weeks of school. These events are designed to celebrate success and to motivate students to stay focused on academics and make good choices. Each grade has planned different events and activities including a dance for 7 th and 8th graders, various field trips, and field day activities. Students have been informed that their participation depends on being appropriately behaved and working hard in their classes in the weeks preceding these events. We appreciate your support in helping us to maintain our students’ focus on success in school as we countdown to the end of the year. Virginia state law requires all rising 6th graders to receive the DTAP booster shot before entering school in August. We will be offering a free shot clinic on June 2, during the school day. If you choose to have your 5 th grade student participate, required paper work will be sent home towards the end of May to be completed and returned. Summer school will begin on July 7. If you are interested in having your student participate, please submit your registration form immediately. This summer the DMMS library will be open on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 pm beginning June 25. Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are welcome to come to the library and check-out books. There will be informal book discussions and students will be able to use the computers and access the Internet. But what happens when school is not in session, especially during the extended summer break? As a parent, you are the most influential person in your children’s lives, and how you work through family issues can have a positive influence on behavior throughout the family as well as the school. Following are some parenting tips to work on throughout the summer months. the child breaks a rule, the parent can point to a printed sheet and ask, “What is the rule?” This takes the heat off the parent as the bad guy and places it on the “rule.” Rules must be clearly stated and reasonable for the child’s age, developmental level and emotional stability. In some situations, the rules can be created with the child, which creates buy-in. For example: The rule might read: “Marie’s bed time is 8 p.m.” When Marie tries to negotiate for a later time, the parent asks the child, “What is the rule?” and the answer is clear. Also choose consequences that fit when rules are broken. Coming home late from a Sibling conflicts: Stay on the sidelines of friend’s house should result in your child sibling arguments (unless there is bloodshed) not being able to see the friend for a few and help your children learn to appropriately days. Missing a trip to the amusement park express their negative feelings. At my school, as punishment does not fit this offense. students learn to use the “magic sentence.” Praise is also important. Look for the good The sentence includes phrases such as “I feel in your child and praise it. Sometimes par… because,” “I want you to…” and “I am ents must look hard to find something to willing to…” Example: “I feel angry because praise, but you still should look for it. Also you called me a name and I want you to stop. work to build your child’s self-esteem I am willing to stop calling you names.” through positive acclamations, such as Using the magic sentence requires practice “You know Billy, I love you because you're and parental guidance. It may feel contrived my son, but I really like you because you’re at first, but if your children and you get into you.” Messages like these really help in the habit of thinking and stating your feelings building self-esteem, especially when they rather than acting out, you’ll find it opens up are unearned and spontaneous. Your child always will appreciate them. the lines of communication and decreases outbursts. Parental conflicts: Two wonderful words can be used when your child wants Encourage your children to listen to other to engage in an unending argument with people’s magic sentences and then repeat you or chooses to defy your authority. They back to them what they understand they are “nevertheless” and “regardless.” For heard. Consistency negotiation and keep the child’s focus on means your behavior as a parent is absolutely the issue. These deflectors can be used to predictable; this is key. To a child this means, avoid arguments in almost any situation. In “Every time I throw a fit in the store, Mom resolving conflicts at home, especially those or Dad will leave the store” If you give in regarding how thoroughly your children once, it’s like a slot machine that pays off. have accomplished their chores, it helps to Winning once is addicting. If the slot never specify the task while being direct and to paid, no one would ever put money in. the point. In this way, there is no confusion. You will have the greatest success if Having rules in print is important. When you keep the statements short and direct, and you child will feel more successful upon completion. As always, don't forget to praise a job well done. Family meetings: At least one night a week should be set aside for family meetings. These should be open forum in that everyone should have an opportunity to tell how they feel. A family meeting isn’t the time to punish or discipline but rather to listen to your children's feelings and concerns and to ask them to listen to yours. Only through open, honest communication can a family increase its positive relationships and grow together. Parenting is hard work. There is no instruction manual for children when they are born. Therefore, we must try new things, hone our skills, learn from and support each other and give ourselves a break when we have rough days. It helps to have a positive attitude. Remember these two phrases from Janet Lane and Henry Chester. Lane says, "Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important.” Chester says, "Enthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world. It beats money, power and influence.” P age 4 Builders Club May is an exciting month for our Builders Club. We will have three more full meetings. Extra meetings will be held to plan for the 5th Annual Used Book Sale AND our new Jewelry Sale. Over 50 members and parent volunteers worked the Kiwanis Spring Pancake Day held April 5th. With smiles on their faces they set tables, cleared tables, served sausage, served drinks and learned how great volunteering can feel. At their shift’s end they could eat as many PANCAKES as they wanted. Volunteers (members and adults) are needed for sorting, setting up and boxing books AND on the days of the events Proceeds from the sale will go to some great causes which we will vote on at our meeting. P age 5 DMMS Students Pave the Way With Tile Murals Students in grades 5 through 8 at Daniel Morgan Middle School have been busy beautifying the hallways with large scale tile murals that exist as permanent testament to their creativity. Through a collaborative effort with visual artist Beryl Solla and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the murals have been expanding over the walls outside the school's auditorium over the past several years. The initial murals flank the doors of the auditorium; subsequent murals have grown to wrap around the large, previously empty corridor. DMMS administration and staff are extremely supportive of the project and hope it will continue until the space is completely wrapped in murals. Beryl Solla, professor of art at Piedmont Virginia Community College, works with groups of students to first develop a concept for the artwork, and then guide them through the entire mural process from start to finish. The murals reflect the community of DMMS as well as the surrounding community of Winchester. The images chosen by the students include apples, music notes, footballs, tacos, and just about everything in between. The murals are active, vibrant, and diverse - a fitting reflection of the many students who had a hand in creating them! Recently, fifth grade students participated in writing break out groups. Students in Ms. Studebaker’s writing break out session were challenged with creating an amazing adventure story. These adventure stories were then submitted to Green Screen Adven- tures for a writing competition. Green Screen Adventures selects winners to be published on their website. First place winners receive the honor of their story being made in to a short online episode. This year Daniel Morgan had several writers who were published. Congratulations to Mark Machado, Jonathan Patrick, Brennon Putt, Grace Dunn, Sophia Posadas, Samantha Darrell, Samantha Thomas, and Jet Savusdiphol. Estoy dispuesto a cambiar."
