SIMPLIFIED OPERATION
DURING PHASE 1 :
5 < > 2Oms
When handswitch is pressed Safety Relay is activated and, power supply sent to triacs.
DURING PHASE 2 :
1 < > 20 ms
The Preheat time is going to start, by activating Triac A.
DURING PHASE 3:
220 mS
PREHEAT TIME
Power supply is sent to the X-ray head through two 39 Ω resistor.
A reduced value of main supply reaches the head and high voltage to the tube is present and filament starts to
warm up.
During the first 80 ms, filament is still cold, transformer is not loaded by the tube current, there is no electron
going to the anode of the tube.
As the transformer is unloaded, high voltage to the tube is quite high ( 80-90 kV).
As the filament is warming up, some electrons are going to hit the anode with a high kinetic energy emitting a
photon with a high frequency (hard X-ray). In fact the first peak detected by NERO. At that time tube current is a
few µAmp (microamps).
Because of the resistive characteristics of an high voltage transformer, there is quite a big difference between
high voltage loaded or unloaded. This is the first reason which makes the kV drop. This drop is increased; and
increasing drop of tension through R1 while the consumption of the head is higher due to a warmer filament and
a larger tube current. Filament is still warming up. Exposure time is going to start by activating TRIAC B.
DURING PHASE 4 :
EXPOSURE TIME
Mains voltage is sent to the X-ray head by activating triac B (shorting R1). Filament is not hot enough to deliver
the 8mA during the first 60 - 100 mS of exposure time, and this makes the kV higher than nominal value. Once
the filament has reached its temperature, kV are stabilised around the nominal KV value for the complete
remaining duration of exposure.
DURING PHASE 5 :
5 < > 20 ms
The two triacs A, B are opened and no voltage is applied to the tube head, no more X-rays are emitted.
Safety relay will fall down 5 < > 20 mS.

In this case during the preheat a low radiation is generated ( see the following curve ), usual mesasuring
devices detect the kVp and low radiation during this time.
Because the exposure time is calculated on the kVp, the time measured is false.
1 - For measuring the exposure time you can use the method proposed by IEC 601-2-7 (1987) :
With a dosimeter and oscilloscope you count the number of cycles greater than 20% of the maximun value of
the dose rate and multiply by 20 ms in 50 Hz or 16.6 ms in 60 Hz.
2 – or you can use the method proposed by IEC 601-2-7 (1998) :
With an oscilloscope you count the number of cycles greater than 25% of the maximun value of the mA rate and
multiply by 20 ms in 50 Hz or 16.6 ms in 60 Hz.
