I. Introduction to the Language CD Contents.
MAITHILI CD is a set of various softwares which enables you to do
various tasks in Indian Languages. For the sake of convenience of the
users the softwares in the CD are divided into three categories.
1) Tools for Desktop usage 2) Tools for Internet usage and 3) Utilities.
Tools for Desktop usage contain basic tools required by the user for
creating contents in MAITHILI language. Software for day to day office

uses or documentation purposes called Libre Office.
Tools for Internet usage include the set of softwares which can be used
by users who have access to internet and are aware of some basic
things about internet usage. This set of softwares includes Local
language open source Web browser called Mozilla Firefox, software for
sending and receiving emails (email client) called Mozilla Thunderbird,
and software for chatting with others over internet called PIDGIN.
Utilities include Accounting Software called GNUCash, a graphics
design software called INKSCAPE, Drawing software for children called
TUXPAINT, and content management system called Joomla.
Following tasks can be accomplished using the softwares given in
the Language software CD.
1. Create data/ contents in MAITHILI language by using any
application such as Libre Office, Notepad, MS Office or any
other Unicode compatible applications.
2. Send Emails in MAITHILI language.
3. Chat with others over internet in MAITHILI language.
4. You can browse various websites and do any other internet
related activity by using the web browser.
5. Maintain accounting information for individuals, smallscale industries/ organizations.

6. Design and create all kinds of graphics.
7. Children can use the software for creating some funny
pictures and drawings.
8. You can create simple to very powerful websites, web
portals in Indian languages.

1. Please insert the CD in the CD ROM Drive and Explore CD
contents, and double click Index.htm.
2. A Screen similar to this appears on your computer.

(Execute start.sh with user permissions and provide superuser credentials only when installer asks for).
8. A menu will be displayed. Precede installation by selecting
among Desktop Tools, Internet Tools and/or Utilities.

NOTE: Installer may require an internet connection if it does not
meet base dependencies.
Integrated Installer is tweaked for Ubuntu Linux, whereas Individual
Installation should be preferred while installing tools on debian linux,
boss or linux mint debian edition.
INDIVIDUAL INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION
FONTS
This category introduces C-DAC (GIST) fonts (confined to license terms
of C-DAC GIST) for better rendering. To install fonts untar GISTFonts.tar.gz and run install.sh file in terminal.

DESKTOP TOOLS
This category contains LibreOffice with Language Support. To install
LibreOffice untar compressed file and run install.sh file in terminal.
User can invoke LibreOffice through Applications > Office.
To enable Language Pack invoke LibreOffice and, navigate to Tools >
Options > Language Settings > Languages > User Interface and, select
newly installed language and restart LibreOffice.
INTERNET TOOLS
This category has Internet Browser: Mozilla Firefox, Email Client: Mozilla
Thunderbird with Calender Plugin and Chatting Messenger: Pidgin.
To install mozilla tools untar compressed file and run firefox or
thunderbird, actually no installation is required as such. Mozilla Firefox
and Thunderbird are getting installed at /home/$USER/Internet-Tools.
Further, user can install Lightning Plugin: /home/$USER/InternetTools/lightning-1.7-sm+tb.xpi through manage add-ons in
thunderbird.
Pidgin follows untar and running install.sh steps. Pidgin Desktop
shortcut can be used to invoke Pidgin, which can only be removed if
get uninstalled using uninstaller script.
UTILITIES
This category provides Accounting Software: GnuCash, Imaging

CMS: Joomla with lampp server. All the tools follow untar and running
install.sh steps.
GnuCash, Inkscape and Tuxpaint Desktop shortcut can be used to
invoke GnuCash, Inkscape and Tuxpaint respectively, which can only be
removed if get uninstalled using uninstaller script.
Joomla Installation Instructions:
1. Navigate to Joomla Directory and issue command...
$ ./install.sh
This will install lampp server at /opt/lampp.
To start, stop, check status, restart and help; user can issue:

Point your browser to http://localhost/joomla and follow onscreen

And to install Language Pack navigate to Extensions as well

This setup will install localised version of Libre Office.
MAITHILI VERSION OF LIBRE OFFICE (OFFICE SOFTWARE)
Libre office is a Free and open source office software like any other
commercially available office softwares. It has components for Word
Processing (WRITER), Spreadsheet Application (CALC), Presentation
software (IMPRESS), Database application (BASE), Drawing software
(DRAW), and Application for creating mathematical formulae (MATH).
The advantages of why one should use or switch to Libre office are as
follows:

available in Indian languages.
2. User can export the files as .PDF with a single button click.
3. There is a large base of satisfied Libre Office users
worldwide.
4. It's free no worry about license costs or annual fees.
5. It is available in different languages including Indian
languages.
6. You can use it, customize it, hack it and copy it without any
worries. It is distributed under LGPL public license.
7. Simple-to-use yet powerful interface that is easy to
personalize
8. Compatible with all major competitors' file formats. You can
easily import files from Microsoft Word, Excel and
PowerPoint and many other formats, and can easily save to
Microsoft Office and other formats when needed.

This setup will install three softwares on your computer machine. Viz.

Mozilla firefox is a very powerful open source web browser. Since it is a
web browser, it can solve all your problems just like other web browsers
like Internet Explorer. It is software which enables users to access, retrieve
and view documents and other resources on the Internet. We have given

localized version of firefox. User can switch between English and
MAITHILI Language using Quick Locale Switcher which is present as a
Plugin in Firefox.
B.2. MAITHILI VERSION OF THUNDERBIRD WITH LIGHTENING
PLUGIN (EMAIL CLIENT)
Thunderbird is a free email application that's easy to set up and
customize and it's also loaded with great features.
1. Easier to get started It is very easy for someone to install this
software and start using it for sending and receiving emails.
2. Tabs and search features - Tabbed email lets you load
emails in separate tabs so you can quickly jump between

them. You can also search the Web without having to leave
Thunderbird application.
3. Customisation of your email choices- Thousands of Add
Ons gives you the freedom to make Thunderbird your own.
You can change the look and feel of the software, “Smart
Folders” feature help you manage multiple email accounts
by combining special folders like your Inbox, Sent, or
Archive folder. Instead of going to the Inbox for each of your
mail accounts, you can see all of your incoming email in one
Inbox folder
4. Security and protection to your email- Thunderbird has

Pidgin is an easy to use and free chat client used lot of people across the
world. One can connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and more chat networks all
at once. Supported chat networks include AIM, Bonjour ,Gadu-Gadu,
Google,,Talk,Groupwise,ICQ,IRC,MSN,MXit,MySpaceIM,SILC,SIMPLE,Sam
etime,XMPP,Yahoo! and Zephyr.
Pidgin is a chat program which lets you log in to accounts on multiple
chat networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with
friends on MSN, talking to a friend on Google Talk, and sitting in a Yahoo
chat room all at the same time
