Measuring principle
The measurement principle of toxic gases is based on the electrochemical principle or optionally on infrared bench
(NDIR).
Temperatures are measured by means of thermocouples Type K (NiCrNi) , optionally type S ( PtRhPt) for very high
temperature probe and Platinum RTD PT 2000.
2.1
Electrochemical measuring
measuring principle
The oxygen content of the sample gas will be measured with a 2 electrodes electrochemical sensor.
Toxic gases like carbon monoxide CO, nitrogen oxide NO, nitrogen dioxide NO2, sulfur dioxide SO2 ,hydrogen sulphide H2S will be measured with 3-electrodes sensors.
The electrochemical sensors are based on the gas diffusion technology.
The advantages of this technology are: The permanently generated signal is direct proportionally and linear to the
volume concentration (% or ppm) of the analysis gas components.
The 3 electrodes are: S (sensing electrode), C (counter electrode) and R (reference electrode).

The gases reaches the sensing electrode reacts on the electrode surface either through oxidation ( for example CO,
H2S, SO2, NO, H2 ) or reduction (like CO, H2S, SO2, NO, H2 )
Example: CO sensor:
CO reacts at the sensing electrode as follows:
CO + H2O - > CO2 + 2H+ + 2eotherwise: at the counter electrode oxygen from air will be re-oxidize to water:
½ O2 + 2H+ + 2e
2 e - - > H 2O
The generated current (µA-range) will be measured and analysed by the microprocessor.

2.2
NDIRNDIR- measurement
By means of the non-disperse infrared bench of the RASI 901, it is possible to measure carbon monoxide (CO),
carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydro-carbons (HC).
Optional it is possible to measure sulphur dioxide SO2 in higher ranges as it is possible with the electrochemical SO2
sensor.
Principle of the IRIR- bench
A regulated infrared source (IR) provides a photon stream in the range of 2 to 8 microns (µm). The infrared light is
directed through the sample cell to the optical detector. The source is electronically modulated with 2Hz ( no chopper wheels, no moving parts).
Infrared transparent calcium fluoride lens are provided at each end of the gas sample cell. The pyro-electric detector is temperature regulated. Additionally a measurement compensation for the sample gas temperature and pressure variations is provided.
The residual infrared energy, not absorbed by the sample gas, is guided to the optical detector. It passes four optical narrow band pass filter that are each aligned on the infrared absorption spectrum of the target gases (one filter
is the reference filter; it is used for ageing and soiling compensation).
Infrared light passed through the filter is collected by four pyro-electric detectors, which share the same housing.
They produce a voltage that is proportional to light intensity. The detector block temperature measurement and
regulation facilitates compensation for IR filter and IR detector temperature variances. The detector out-put is preamplified and sent via a multiplexer to an analog or to a digital converter (ADC) and to the u-controller.

Prepare for measurement
It is necessary to check before even measurement the condensate separator. The separator must be clean
(without
(without condensate) and the filter has to be white coloured!
coloured! If the filter is contaminated, it changes the
colour from white to grey/brown and is has be washed up to 5 times (e.g. ultrasonic bath) or replaced!
(Start-up with other available probes see § 7)
• Take out analyser from the transport case
• Mount gas sample probe and connect it to the analyser.
Connect RASI to mains power supply
It can be power supplied by:

14.1
Manual for firmware update of H8H8 - Industrial analyzers
14.1.1 System requirements
•
Operating system MS Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP or later
•
Pentium PC 450MHz or better
•
One avalable RS232 port. It should be a real RS232 port. A RS232-USB adaptor may work, but may fail as well.
14.1.2 Important
Important hints and warnings
• Most probably stored measurements and sites get lost during a firmware update!
•
After the update the analyser must be switched off, as soon as it has reached the self test window! Please
disconnect mains (unplug cable or switch off the master switch), analysers with battery additionally need to be
switched off by pressing the keys F1 and F4 simultaneously. Now you can restart the analyser and use it with
its new firmware.
•
Please start the update only with a reliable mains connection.
14.1.3 Update procedure
•
Please do not switch-on the analyser yet and disconnect mains! Connect the analyser with a 0-modem-cable
(at least five-wire crossed) to the PC’s RS232 port.
•
Start the PC-program “MRU_UPLOADER.EXE”.
•
Select the COM-port, which is connected with the analyser by clicking on “RS232” and then on the appropriate “COMx”.
•
Load a firmware file by clicking on “file” / “load file” and selecting a file.
•
Now press and hold down the F1 key and connect mains (plug cable or switch on the master switch). Hold the
F1 key down until the PC indicates the message “MRU unit (H8-generation) recognized”. Now you can release
the F1 key.
•
The update usually takes less than one minute. The unit’s display stays empty during the uploading process.
When the update has finished, the unit starts its program as usual. Please bear in mind now the important
hints and warnings written above concerning switching-off and data loss!
14.1.4 Possible causes and solutions in case of update failure:
•
Cable problems: cable defective, wrong cable or cable not properly plugged
•
Another software runs on the used PC reserving the selected RS232 port: Close all running programs and restart MRU_UPLOADER.EXE.
•
A serial mouse uses the one and only RS232 port: Use another PC or another mouse.
•
You have not selected the COMx port which is connected to the analyser: Change the COM-port selection.

14.5.1.5 NO2NO2- conversion of NO2 [ppm]
No conversions of NO2!. All the values of interest are in the NOx conversion.
14.5.1.6 NOxNOx- conversion of NO [ppm] (possible also of NO2 [ppm])
NOx[ ppm ] = NO[ ppm ] ⋅ 1,05
(if no NO2-sensor exists)
NOx[ ppm ] = NO[ ppm ] + NO 2[ ppm ]
(if a NO2-sensor exists)
NOx undel [ ppm] = NOx[
NOx[

If NOx is specified in mg, it has to be considered, that all the NO in the atmosphere will become to NO2.
Therefore the conversion factor ppm => mg is factor of NO2.
