Knowledge…
For example, you want to leave from a
church to go to a lake.
North
There are two types of north: the North
and magnetic north.
The North is the north indicated on
maps. It is the direction of the top of a
map. The compass indicates magnetic
north. Magnetic north is caused by the
earth’s gravity and it is derived from
about 11 degrees of North.
Draw a line on your map to link your
two points: the church and the lake.
The Needle
In almost our compasses, you will notice
the needle is divided in 2 colours: red
and black. The red part always points to
the magnetic north pole, wherever the
direction you are, even if you turn the
compass around.
The azimuth
The azimuth is the horizontal angle
between the direction sight and the
North. This is the angle of direction to
follow.
Map handling
 To know the direction between
two points on a map
Put the compass on the map where
the church is and match the compass
side with the line drawn previously. The
arrow of sight has to point at the lake.
Line up the north of the compass
(N) with the map’s north (= to the top of
the map) by turning the rotary crown, the
orienteering lines will help you to get a
perfect match.
Now, on the crown, you are able to
read the azimuth and know the angle of
direction to follow.
To know the distance between
those two points, you have to look at the
scales written on the compass.
 Application of this direction in the
field
Once the azimuth is found, your
compass is ready. Do not touch to the
rotary crown anymore.
Hold the compass in your hand and
turn it to make the red needle match with
the north of the compass (N).
Now, you can follow the direction
indicated by the arrow of sight.
To know how to head toward
 Make a sight
For example, you are on a hill and you
see a church but during the walk, you
won’t see it.
Take the compass in your hand with
the arrow of sight pointed to the church.
Once the church aimed, turn the
crow of the compass to make the red
needle match with the north on the
compass (N). The sight is now done.
Note the azimuth. The arrow of sight
indicates the direction to follow to reach
the church. The red needle always has
to match with the north (N).
However, to avoid any mistake, we
suggest you to divide your itinerary into
several steps.
