The Dental Investigation Service (DIS) has
been part of the Air Force Dental Corps for
almost 30 years, providing members of the
dental community with free, easily accessible
information on dental products. The mission at
DIS has always been to offer tangible solutions
to operational problems and provide advice to
all personnel in the Federal dental services. To
more accurately reflect this mission, DIS has
changed its name to United States Air Force
Dental Evaluation and Consultation Service
(DECS).
DECS is currently located at the Naval
Service Training Command, Great Lakes,
Illinois, and shares facilities with the Naval
Institute of Dental and Biomedical Research
(NIDBR) and the Army Dental and Trauma
Research Detachment (USADTRD), but
remains a detachment of the USAF School of
Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) at Brooks
City-Base, Texas.
Although DIS physically moved in 2000, its
web site server and web address remained at
Brooks City-Base. This too, will soon change.
DECS recently acquired a server at Great
Lakes and when it becomes fully operational
within the next few months, anyone visiting the
current DECS web site, www.brooks.af.mil/dis,
will be redirected to the new address. The
DECS web site will continue to offer new dental
and infection control product information;
synopses on dental materials and equipment;
and results from product evaluations. A 5-level
rating scale for product evaluations ranging
from unacceptable to outstanding plus a visual
rating scale using 1 to 5 Air Force symbols was
initiated in March 2005 for product evaluations.

literature reviews; continuing education (CE)
lectures; frequently asked questions; and
readiness information are available on the web

Oraqix® (lidocaine and prilocaine
periodontal gel) 2.5%/2.5% is a needle-free,
dental local anesthesia approved for adults
who require localized anesthesia in periodontal
pockets during scaling and/or root planing.
Oraqix is applied using the blunt-tipped
Oraqix™ Dispenser, which dispenses the
anesthetic as a liquid, then sets as a gel at
body temperature. Oraqix has a 30 second
onset, approximately 20 minute duration, and
can be re-applied up to a maximum of five
cartridges.

Endodontists can now clearly and
consistently map their working length with
DENTSPLY Maillefer’s new ProPex™ apex
locator.
The key to the accuracy of the ProPex apex
locator lies in its multi-frequency technology.
Detailed graphics, combined with a progressive
audio signal and pre-apical warning, provides
the user a clear picture of his or her location in
the canal, even with the presence of blood,
tissue, NaOCl or other fluids.
Another advantage of the ProPex apex
locator is its ease of use. Its design is compact
and ergonomic, and its LCD screen is large,

direction of the file’s movement is reflected by

New Calamus™ Flow Obturation Delivery System
DENTSPLY Tulsa introduces its new
Calamus™ Flow obturation delivery system.
Designed for ergonomic control and easy
cleanup, the Calamus Flow system has a
slender pen-like handpiece that provides
tactile sensation, visibility and comfortable
access to all areas of the mouth.
Lightly pressing and releasing any flat
portion of the activation cuff around the hand
piece allows a stop-and-start flow of guttapercha into the canal. Buttons on the console
easily control the temperature and flow rate of
the gutta-percha, and an indicator window

of filling material loaded in the handpiece.

Singles gutta-percha cartridges, which make

BioPure™ MTAD™ antibacterial root canal
cleanser.
BioPure MTAD antibacterial cleanser is an
antimicrobial solution designed to chemically
clean and disinfect the root canal system
following endodontic instrumentation.
In root canal therapy, the main objectives
are to remove bacteria from infected root
canals, shape the canals, fill them in three
dimensions and prevent re-infection. Current
cleaning and shaping methods produce a
"smear layer" of necrotic pulp tissue, dentinal
shavings, vascular tissue and bacteria that
cover the instrumented canal walls. Because of
the smear layer’s potential contamination,
experts believe it should be removed to allow
disinfection of the entire root canal system.
Studies have shown that today’s standard
disinfection products and procedures are
inadequate. Irrigants like distilled water or
sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) leave the smear
layer intact. EDTA removes the smear layer,
but erodes the orifices of dentinal tubules in
the process and has little to no
antibacterial effect.
