For two years from date of purchase, when this Craftsman Lawn Mower is maintained,
lubricated, and tuned up according to the operating and maintenance instructions in the
owner's manual, Sears will repair free of charge any defect in material or workmanship.
if this Craftsman Lawn Mower is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warranty
applies for only 90 days from the date of purchaser
This Warranty does not cover:
o Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as rotary mower
blades, blade adapters, belts,
air cleaners and spark plug.
o Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent crankshafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructions contained in the owner's manual.

PREPARATION:
= Always thoroughly check the area to be
mowed and clear it of all stones, sticks,
wires, bones, and other foreign objects.
These objects will be thrown by the blade
and can cause severe injury.
° Always wear safety glasses or eye
shields when starting and while using
your mower.
° Dress properly. Do not operate mower
when barefoot or wearing open sandals.
Wear only solid shoes with good traction
when mowing.
° Check fuel tank before starting engine.
Do not fill gas tank indoors, when the

hot. Allowthe engineto coolfor several
minutesbeforefillingthe gas tank. Clean
off any spilledgasolinebeforestartingthe

OPERATION:
• Keep your eyesand mind on your mower

o Do not put hands or feet near or under
rotatingparts.Keepclear of the discharge

and any gravel--covered areas.
o Never directdischargeof materialtoward

• Beforecleaning,inspecting,or repainng
your mower,stop the engineand make
absolutelysurethe blade and all moving
parts have stopped.Then disconnectthe
spark plug wireand keep it awayfrom the
spark plug to preventaccidentalstarting.
° Do not continueto runyour mowerif you
hit a foreign object.Followthe procedure
outlinedabove,then repair any damage
before restartingand operatingyou
mower.
o Do not changethe governorsettingsor
overspeedthe engine. Enginedamageor

o Do not operateyour mowerif it vibrates

indicationof damage; stop the engine,
safely checkfor the causeof vibration
and repair as required.
• Do not runthe engine indoors. Exhaust
fumes are dangerous.
° Never cut grass by pulling the mower
towards you. Mow across the face of
slopes, never up and down or you might
lose your footing. Do not mow excessively steep slopes. Use caution when
operating the mower on uneven terrain
or when changing directions -- maintain
good footing.
Never operate your mower without
proper guards, plates, grass catcher or
other safety devices in place.
MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE:
° Check the blade and the engine mounting bolts often to be sure they are
tightened properly.
o Check all bolts, nuts and screws at
frequent intervals for proper tightness to
be sure mower is in safe working
condition.
• Keep al! safety devices in place and
working.
o To reduce fire hazard, keep the engine
free of grass, leaves or excessive grease
and oil.
- Check grass catcher often for deterioration and wear and replace worn bags.
Use only replacement bags that are
recommended by and comply with
specifications of the manufacturer of your
mower.
o Always keep a sharp blade on your
mower_
, Allow engine to cool before storing in any
enclosure.
o Never store mower with fuel in the tank
inside a building where fumes may reach
an open flame or an ignition source such
as a hot water heater, space heater,
clothes dryer, etc.
CAUTION: Always disconnect spark plug
wire and place wire where it cannot
contact spark plug in order to prevent
accidental starting when setting up,
transporting, adjusting or making repairs.

IMPORTANT:

Do not attempt to defeat the function of the
operator presence controls under any
circumstances.
Read these instructions and this manual in
its entirety before you attempt to assemble
or operate your new lawn mower. Your new
lawn mower has been assembled at the
factory with the exception of those parts left
unassembled for shipping purposes. All
parts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,
necessary to complete the assembly have
been placed in the parts bag. To ensure

mower, all parts and hardware you assemble must be tightened securely. Use the
correct tools as necessary to ensure proper
tightness.
TO REMOVE LAWN MOWER FROM
CARTON
o
Remove loose parts included with mower.
o
Cut down two end corners of carton and
lay end panel down flat.
Remove all packing materials except
padding between upper and lower handle
and padding holding operator presence
control bar to upper handle.
Roll lawn mower out of carton and check
carton thoroughly for additional loose
parts.

TO INSTALL
ATTACHMENTS
Your lawn mower was shipped ready to be
used as a mulcher. To convert to bagging
or discharging:
o Open rear door and remove mulcher
plug. Store mulcher plug in a safe place.
° You can now install catcher or optional
clipping deflector.
o To return to mulching operation, install
mulcher plug into discharge opening of
mower.
CAUTION:
Do not run your lawn mower
without mulcher plug in place or approved
clipping deflector or grass catcher in place.
Never attempt to operate the lawn mower with
the rear door removed or propped open.

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWER
ENGINE SPEED CONTROL
]he engine speed is controlled by a lever
located on the side of the engine. Fast position
isfor starting the engine, normal cutting,and
better grass bagging. Slow position is for light
cutting,trimming and fuel economy.
ENGINE
o Lift the rear door on the mower housing and
place the grass catcher frame onto the
formed tabs on the rear door hinge bracket.
o The grass catcher is secured to the lawn
mower housing when the rear door is
lowered onto the grass catcher frame.
CAUTION:
Do not run your lawn mower
without clippingdeflector or approved grass
catcher in place. Never attempt to operate the
lawn mower with the rear door removed or
propped
ZONE CONTROL
CAUTION:
Federal regulations require an
engine control to be installed on this lawn
mower in order to minimize the risk of blade
contact injury. Do not under any circumstances
attempt to defeat the function of the operator
control The blade tums when the engine is
running.
o Your lawn mower is equipped with an
operator presence control bar which
requires the operator to be positioned
behind the lawn mower handle to start and

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT
o Raise wheels for low cut and lower wheels
for high cut.
° Adjust cutting height to suit your requirements. Medium position is best for most
lawns.
o To change cutting height, squeeze adjuster
lever toward wheel. Move wheel up or down
to suit your requirements. Be sure all wheels
are in the same setting.
DRIVE CONTROL
o Self-propelling is controlled by holding the
operator presence control bar down to the
handle and pushing the drive control lever
forward until it clicks; then release the drive
control lever.
, Forward motion will stop when the operator
presence control bar is released° To stop
forward motion without stopping engine,
release the operator presence control bar
slightly until the dnve control disengages.
Hold operator presence control bar down to
handle to continue mowing without selfpropelling.
o To keep drive control engaged when tuming
comers, push down on handle and lift front
wheels off ground while turning lawn
NOTE: Adjuster is properly positioned when
plate tab inserts into hole in lever. Also, 9position adjusters (if so equipped) allow lever
to be positioned between the plate tabs.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

engine.
o Be sure mower is level and area around oil
fill is clean.
o Remove engine oil cap w/dipstick and fill to
the ful! line on the dipstick.
° Use 27 ozs. of oil. For type and grade of oil
to use, see "ENGINE" in Customer
Responsibilities section of this manual.
o Pour oil slowly. Do not over fil!o
• Check oil level before each use. Add oil if
needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.
° To read proper level, tighten engine oil cap
each time.
° Reinstall engine oil cap and tighten.
° Change the oil after every 25 hours of
operation or each season. You may need
to change the oil more often under dusty,
dirty conditions.
GAS
o Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular
unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87
octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline_
Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used
within 30 days to assure fuel freshness.
WARNING:
Experience indicates that
alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using
ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture
which leads to separation and formation of
acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage
the fuel system of an engine while in storage.
To avoid engine problems, the fuel system
should be emptied before storage of 30 days
or longer. Drain the fuel tank start the engine
and let it run until fuel lines and carburetor are
empty° Use fresh fuel next season. See
Storage instructions for additional information,
Never use engine or carburetor cleaner
products in fuel tank or permanent damage
TO START ENGINE
o To start a cold engine, push primer five (5)
times before trying to start, Use a firm push.
This step is not usually necessary when
starting an engine which has already run for
a few minutes.
o Push engine speed control lever to fast
position.
• Hold operator presence control bar down to
the handle and pull starter handle quickty.
Do not allow starter rope to snap back.
o To stop engine, release operator presence
control bar.
NOTE: In cooler weather it may be necessary to repeat priming steps. In warmer
weather over priming may cause flooding and
engine will not start. If you do flood engine,
walt a few minutes before attempting to start
and do not repeat priming steps.

MOWING TIPS
° Under certain conditions, such as very tall
grass, it may be necessary to raise the
height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to
keep from overloading the engine and
leaving clumps of grass clippings.
° For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the
width of cut and raise the rear of the lawn
mower housing one (1) wheel adjuster
setting higher than the front for better
discharge of grass_
• For better grass bagging and most cutting
conditions, the engine speed should be set
in the fast position.
• When using a rear discharge lawn mower in
moist, heavy grass, clumps of cut grass
may not enter the grass catcher. Reduce
ground speed (pushing speed) and/or run
the lawn mower over the area a second
time.
° if a trail of grass clippings is left on the right
side of a rear discharge lawn mower, mow
in a clockwise direction with a small overlap
to collect the clippings on the next pass.
° Keep top of engine around starter clear and
clean of grass clippings and chaff. This will
help engine air flow and extend engine life.

o Change your cutting pattem from week to
week. Mow north to south one 'week then
change to east to west the next week. This
will help prevent matting and graining of the
lawn_

MULCHING MOWING TIPS
IMPORTANT:
For best performance, keep
mower housing free of built-up grass and
trash. Clean UNDERSIDE OF MOWER
HOUSING after each use. See "Cleaning" in
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES section of

o The special mulching blade wilt recur the
grass clippings many times and reduce
them in size so that as they fall onto the
lawn they will disperse into the grass and
not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will
biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for
the lawn, Always mulch with your highest
engine (blade) speed as this will provide the
best recutting action of the blades.
, Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet
grass tends to form clumps and interferes
with the mulching action. The best time to
mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this
time the grass has dried and the newly cLrt

LUBRICATION
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this lawn mower does not
cover items that have been subjected to
operator abuse or negligence. To receive full
"valuefrom the warranty, operator must maintain
mower as instructed in this manual.
Some adjustments will need to be made
periodically to properly maintain your unit.
All adjustments in the Service and
Adjustments section of this manual should be
checked at least once each season.
o Once a year, replace the spark plug, replace
air filterelement and check blade for wear. A
new spark plug and clean/new air filter
element assures proper air-fuel mixture and
helps your engine run better and last longer.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil or grease plastic
wheel bearings. Viscous lubricants will attract
dust and dirt that wilt shorten the life of the self

TIRES
o Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect
control chemicals which can harm rubber°

(bolt, lock washer and hardened washer).

For best results, mower blade must be kept
sharp. Replace bent or damaged blades.
TO REMOVE BLADE
o Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug
and place wire where it cannot come in
contact with spark plugo
• Turn lawn mower on its side. Make sure air
filter and carburetor are up,
o Use a wood block between blade and
mower housing to prevent blade from
turning when removing blade bolt,
• Protect your hands with gloves and/or wrap
blade with heaW cloth.
o Remove blade bolt by tuming counterclockwise, Use a 9/16" box or open-end
wrench°

o Position the blade adapter on the engine
crankshaft. Be sure key in adapter and
keyway in crankshaft are aligned.
• Position blade on the blade adapter aligning
the two (2) holes in the blade with the raised
lugs on the adapter.

TO SHARPEN BLADE
Care should be taken to keep the blade
balanced. An unbalanced blade will cause
eventual damage to lawn mower or engine+
o The blade can be sharpened with a file or on
a grinding wheel° Do not attempt to sharpen
while on the mower.
o To check blade balance, drive a nail into a
beam or wall. Leave about one inch of the
straight nail exposed. Place center hole of
blade over the head of the nail. If blade is
balanced, it should remain in a horizontal
position. If either end of the blade moves
downward, sharpen the heavy end until the
blade is balanced.
GRASS CATCHER
o The grass catcher may be hosed with water,
but must be dry' when used+
o Checkyour grass;catcher often for damage
or deterioration. Through normal use it will
wear. if catcher needs replacing, replace
only with a manufacturer approved replacement catcher. Give the lawn mower model
number when ordering.
DRIVE WHEELS
Check front drive wheels each time before
you mow to be sure they move freely.
The wheels not turning freely means trash,
grass cuttings, etc. are in the drive wheel
area and must be cleaned to free drive
wheels.
If necessary' to clean the drive wheels,
check both front wheels.
o Remove hubcaps, hairpin cotters and
washers.
o Remove wheels from wheel adjusters.
= Remove any trash or grass cuttings
from inside the dust cover, pinion and/or
drive wheel gear teeth.
° Put wheels back in place.
If after cleaning, the drive wheels do not
turn freely, contact your nearest
authorized service center.

° To keep your drive system working
properly, the gear case and area around

cold weather, these multi--viscosity

Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or at least once a year ifthe lawn mower
is not used for 25 hours in one year.
Check the crankcase oil level before
starting the engine and after each five (5)
hours of continuous use. Tighten oil plug
securely each time you check the oil level.
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drain
oil, drain fuel tank by running engine until
fuel tank is empty.
° Disconnect spark plug wire from spark
plug and place wire where it cannot
come in contact with spark plug.

o Remove engineoil cap; lay aside on a
clean surface.
o Tip lawn moweron its side as shown
and drain oil into a suitable container.
Rock lawn mowerback andforth to
remove any oil trapped inside of engine.
o Wipe off any spilled oil on lawn mower
and on side of engine.
o Fill enginewith oil. Fill only to the "FULL"
line on the dipstick.DO NOT OVER
FILL.
° Replace engineoil cap.
o Reconnect spark plug wire to spark
plug.

Yourenginewill not run properly and may be
damaged by using a dirty air filter.
Replace the air filter every year, more often
if you mow in very dusty, dirty conditions. Do
not ,wash air filter.
TO CHANGE AIR FILTER
o Loosen cover screw.
o Swing cover down and remove from hinge.
° Pull paper filter out of air cleaner body.
° Clean air cleaner cover and body.
° Install a new paper filter.
= Reinstall cover to air cleaner body. Be sure
hinge is assembled properly.
o Swing cover up and tighten cover screw.

MUFFLER
inspect and replace corroded muffler as it
could create a
fire hazard and/or damage.
SPARK PLUG
Change your spark plug each year to make
your engine start easier and run better. Set
spark plug gap at .030 inch.
CLEANING
IMPORTANT: For best performance, keep
mower housingfree of built--up grass and
trash° Clean underside of mower housing after
each use.
CAUTION: Disconnect spark plug wire from
spark plug and place wire where it cannot
come in contact with the spark plug.
° Tum lawn mower on its side_ Make sure air
filter and carburetor are up. CIean the
underside of your lawn mower by scraping
to remove build--up of grass and trash.
• Clean engine often to keep trash from
accumulating. A clogged engine nJns hotter
and shortens engine life.
• Keep finished surfaces and wheets free of
all gasoline, oil, etc.
o We DO NOT recommend using a garden
hose to clean lawn mower unless the
electrical system, muffler, air filter and
carburetor are covered to keep water out°

REAR DEFLECTOR
The rear deflector, attached between the
rear wheels of your lawn mower, is
provided to minimize the possibility that
objects will be thrown ou_ the rear of the
lawn mower into the operator's mowing
position,
If the rear deflector becomes damaged, it
should be replaced.
TO REMOVE/REPLACE
DRIVE BELT
° Remove drive cover. Remove belt by
pushing down on gear case pulley and
rolling belt off it.
o Turn lawn mower on its side with
carburetor and fuel cap up.
o Remove blade.
o Remove debris shield.
° Remove belt from engine pulley on
crankshaft.
° Install new belt by reversing above
steps.
• Always use factory approved belt to
assure fit and long life.

o Remove the cable clips.
o Remove the controls and operator
presence control bar from the upper
handle.
° Remove hairpin cotters.
= Disconnect the lower handle from the
handle bracket&
o Turn the handle over and reassemble
the hairpin cotters that have been
removed.
o Route cable(s) below crossbar of lower
handle and reassemble the controls and
the operator presence control bar to the
upper handle.
CAUTION:
The operator presence
control bar must pivot freely to permit
blade brake engagement when control bar
is released. Do not over tighten the
fasteners holding the controls to the upper
handle.

will have to be turned over.

or it may result in personal injury, if you
believe that the engine is running too fast
or too slow, take your lawn mower to an
authorized service center for repair and

Your carburetor has a non-adjustable fixed

does not operate properly due to suspected carburetor problems, take your

You can fold your lawn mower handle for
storage.
• Squeeze the bottom ends of the lower
handle toward each other until the lower
handle clears the handle bracket, then
move handle forward.
o Loosen upper handle mounting bolts
enough to allow upper handle to be folded
back.
IMPORTANT:
When folding the handle for
storage or transportation,be sure to fold the
handle as shown or you may damage the
control cables°
° When setting up your handle from the
storage position, the lower handle will

ENGINE
FUEL SYSTEM
IMPORTANT:
It is important to prevent bum
deposits from forming in essential juel system
parts such as carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose,
or tank during storabe. Also, experience
indicates that alcolol blended fuels (called
gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can
attract moisture which leads to separation and
formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas
can damage the fuel system of an engine
while in storage.
o Drain the fuel tank.
° Start the engine and let it run until the fuel
lines and carburetor are empty.
° Never use engine or carburetor cleaner
products in the flJe} tank or permanent
damage may occur.
° Use fresh fuel next season.
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable
alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel
gum deposits during storage. Add stabilizer to
gasoline in fuel tank or storage container.
Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer
container. Run engine at least 10 minutes
after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to
reach the carburetor° Do not drain the gas
tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

Do not store gasoline from one season to

to rust. Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will
cause problems.

• Nunca opere la segadora sin las
protecciones adecuadas, las planchas, el
recogedor de c_sped y otros dispositivos de
seguridad en su lugar.

Lea estas instruccionesy este manual
completamente antes de tratar de montar u operar
su segadora nueva. Su segadora nueva ha sido

partes que se dejaron sin montar por razones de

• Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n del
mango infedorse asegure en su lugar, en la
posici6n para segar.
° Remueva la cufa protectora, levante la secci6n
del mango superior hasta su lugar en el mango
inferior y apriete ambas maniIlas del mango.
° Remueva la cuSa del mango que sujeta la barra
de los control que exige la presencia del
opemdor junto con el mango superior.
o El mango de la segadora puede ajustarse segt_n
le acomode para segar. Refi_rase a "AJUSTE
DEL MANGO" en la Secci6n de Servicio y
Ajustes de este manual

Su segadora rue enviada lista para usarse como
una acolchadora de capa vegeta!. Para convertirla

CONTROL

La velocidad del motor se controb por medio de
una palanca ubicada en el lado del motor_ La
posici6n de r_ptdo se usa para arrancar et motor,

PRECAUClON:
Las regulaciones federales
exigen que se instale un control para el motor en
esta segadora para reducir a un mfnimo el riesgo de
lesionarse debido al contacto con la cuchill& Por

del operador. La cuchilla gira cuando el motor est_
funcionandoo
o Su segadora viene equipada con una barra de
control que exige la presencia det operador, Io
que requiere que el operador est6 detr&s del
mango de ta segadoi'a para hacerla arrancar y
operarla.
PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTE
° Levante las ruedas para el code bajo y baje las
ruedas para el corte alto.
° Ajuste la altura de corte para que se acomode a
sus requisito& La posici6n del medio es la mejor
para la mayoffa de los c_spedes.
o Para cambiar la altura de corte, empuje la
palanca det ajustador hacia la nJeda°Mueva la
rueda hacia ardba o hacia abajo de modo que se
acomode a sus requisitos. Aseg_rese que todas
tas ruedas queden igualmente ajustadas.
ATENCION; El ajustador esta correctamente
colocado cuando las orejas de la placa est_
insertadas en el agujero del mango. Tambi_n, los
ajustes de 9 posidones (si equipado) permiten que
el mango pueda ser movido entre las orejas de ta
ptacao

PARA VACIAR EL RECOGEDOR

° Para remover el recogedor del c_sped suelte la
barra de control del operador para poder parar el
motor.
° Levante la puerta de arras y remova el recogedor
del c6sped por el mango.
AVISO: No arTastre la bolsa cuando la vacfe; se
producir& un desgaste innecesario.
CONTROL

DE LA IMPULSION
La autoimpulsi6n se controla a] sujetar la
barra de control que exige la presencia del
operador hacia abajo en el mango y al
empujar la palanca de control de la impulsi6n
hac{a adetante hasta que suene "clic," luego
se suelta la palanca.
° El movimiento hacia adelante parar& cuando
la barra de control que exige la presencia del
operador se suelta. Para parar el movimiento
hacia adelante sin parar el motor, suelte la
barra de control que exige la presencia del
operador un poco hasta que se desenganche
el control de la impulst6n. Sujete fa barra de
control que exige la presencia del operador
abajo en contra det mango para continuar
segando sin autoimpulsi6n.
° Paramantenerel controldela impulsiSn
arrancar el motor y h&galo funcionar hasta que las
lineas del combustible y el carburador queden
vacfoso La pr6xima temporada use combustible
nuevo. Vea las lnstrucciones Para El
Almacenamiento para m&s informaciOn. Nunca use
productos de limpieza para el motor o para el
carburador en el estanque del combustible pues se
pueden producir daSos permanentes.

Su segadora rue enviada sin aceite en el motor.
o Asegerese que la segadora est_ nivelada y que
e! &rea airededor del depSsito de aceite est_
limpiao
° Remueva la tapa del depSsito de aceite del
motor con la varilla indicadora de nivel y rellene
hasta ia Ifnea de lleno en 0sta.
° Use 0,61 (27 oz.) de aceite. Para el tipo y la
calidad vea "MOTOR" en la secciOn de las
"Responsabilidades del Client#' en este manual.
° Vacfe el aceite lentarnente. No Io Ilene
demasiado.
° Revise el nivel dei aceite antes de carla usoo
Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hasta la
linea de lleno en ta varilla indicadorade niveL
= Para leer el nivel adecuado, apriete la tapa de!
depOsito de aceite del motor cada vez.
° Vuelva a instalar la tapa del dep6sito de! aceite y
apd_tela.
o Cambie el acelte despuOs de 25 horas de
operaci6n o una vez por temporadao Puede
necesitar cambiar el aceite m&s a menudo
cuando las condiciones son polvorosas o sucias.
GASOLINA
AVISO: En climas m_s frfos puede que sea
necesafio repetir los pasos del cebado. En
climas m&s calurosos el cebar demasiado
puede producir el ahogo y el motor no va a
arrancar. Si se ahoga el motor espere unos
cuantos minutos antes de tratar de hacerlo
arrancar y no repita los pasos del cebadoo

° Llene el estanque de combustible. Use gasolina
regular, sin plomo, nueva y limpia con el mfnimo
de 87 octanos, No mezcle el aceite con la
gasolina. Para asegurar que la gasolina utilizada
sea fresca compre estanques los cuaJes puedan
ser ulJlizados durante los primeros 30 d_as.
ADVERTENClA:
La experiencia ha indicado que
los combustibles mezclados con alcohol (cenocidos
como gasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol)
pueden atraer la humedad, la clue conduce a la
separaciOn y formaciOn de &cldos durante el
almacenamiento. La gasolina aci'dica puede dafar
el sistema del combustible de un motor durante el
almacenamiento. Para e_Atarlos problemas con el
motor, se debe vaciar el sistema del combustible
antes de guardarlo por un perfodo de 30 dias o
m&s. Vacie el estanque dal combustible, haga

o Bajo ciertas condiciones, tal como c6sped muy
alto, puede ser necesaflo el elevar la altura det
corte para reducirel esfuerzo necesario para
empujar la segadora y para evitar sobrecargar el
motor, dejando montones de recortes de c6sped.
o Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el ancho del
corte pasando parcialmente por encima dei lugar
anteriormente cortado y siegue lentarnente.
• Para un mejor ensacado del c_sped y para la
mayon'a de las condicionesde corte, la velocidad
del motor debe ajustarse a la postci6nde r_idoo
o Cuando use una segadora con descarga trasera
en c6sped h_medo y pesado, los montones det
c6sped cortado puede que no entren en el
recogedor de c6sped. Reduzca la velocidaddel
recorddo (velocidad de empuje) y/o haga
funcionar la segadora sobre el _rea por segunda
VGZ_
o Si queda una huella de cortes en el lado derecho
de una segadora con descarga trasera, siegue
en la direcciSn en que giran las manillas del reloj,
solapando un poco para recaudar los recortes en
la pr6xJma pasada.
• Los poros en los recogedores de c_sped de tela
pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo con el uso y
los recogedores recaudar_ menos c_sped.
Para evitar _sto, rocie et recogedor con la
manguera de agua regularmente y d6jelo
secarse antes de usarlo.
o Mantenga la parte superior del motor, alrededor
del arrancador, despejada y sin recortes de
c6sped y paja..Esto ayudar& el flujo dal alre del
motor y extender& la duraci6n _ste.

Y
IMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejor
rendimiento mantenga la caja de la segadora
sin acumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea
"limpieza" en la seccion de
"RESPONSABILIDADES
DEL CLIENTE" de
este manual.
= La cuchilla acoichadora especial va a volver a
cortar los recortes de c_sped muchas veces,
y los reduce en tama5o, de modo que si se
caen en el c_sped se van a dispesar entre
6ste y no se ,,,an a notar. Tambi6n, el c6sped
acolchado se va a deshacer r&pidamente
entregando substancias nutritivas para el
c6sped. Siempre acolche can la velocidad del
motor (cuchitla) m=Ssalta, pues asf se
obtendr_ la mejor acci6n de recorte de 1as
cuchitlas.
o Evfte cortar et c_sped cuando est6 mojado_ El
c6sped mojado tiende a formar montones e
interfiere con la acci6n de acofchado<. La
mejor hora para segar el c6sped es ternprano
en la tarde. A esa hora 6ste se ha secado y el
&rea reci6n cortada no quedar& expuesta at
sol directo.
• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajuste la
altura del corte de la segadora de modo que
_sta corte solamente el tercio superior de las
hojas de c6sped. En el caso de que el
c6sped haya crecido demasiado, puede ser
necesario el elevar la attura del corte para
reducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar la
segadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,
dejando montones de recortes de c6sped_
Para un acolchamiento muy pesado, reduzca
el ancho del corte pasando por encima del
lugar anteriormente cortado y siegue
lentamente.
o Ciertos tipos de c_sped y sus condiciones
pueden exigir que un _rea tenga que ser
acolchada por segunda vez para esconder
completamente los recortes. Cuando se haga
el segundo corte, siegue atravesado o en
forma perpendicular a la pasada del primer
corte.
• Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana a
semanao Siegue de norte a sur una semana y
luego cambie de este a oeste la pr6xtma
semana. Esto evitar_, que el c6sped se
enrede y cambie de direcci6n.

en donde no pueda entrar en contacto con

° Haga descansar la segadora en su lado,
Asegt'Jrese que et filtro de aire y que el
carburador queden rnirando hacia arriba.
o Use un bloque de madera entre ia cuchilla y
la caja de ta segadora para evitar que la
cuchitta gire cuando se le quite el pemoo
o Proteja sus manos con guantes y/o envuelva
ta cuchilla con una tela gruesa.
o Remueva el perno de la cuchilla gir_ndolo en
el sentido contrario en que giran las maniltas
del reloj.
o Remueva la cuchilla y los artfculos de
ferreteria adjuntadores (el perno, la arandeta
de segufidad y la arandeta endurecida),
AVISO: Remueva el adaptador de ta cuchilla y
revise el cubo interior de la ranura det
adaptador de la cuchillao La ranura tiene que
estar en buenas condiciones para que funcione
en forma adecuada. Cambie et adaptador si

• Ponga el adaptador de la cuchitla en et

del adaptador y que el chavetero del cigueSal
est_n alineados,

alineando los dos (2) agujeros en la cuchilla
con las salientes elevadas en el adaptador,
° Aseg0rese de que el borde de salida de la
cuchilla (opuesto al borde afilado) est_ hacia
arriba hacia el motor.
o Instale el perno de la cuchilia con la arandela
de seguridad y ta arandeta endurecida en el
adaptador de la cuchilla y et cigueSal.

o Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchilta y
la caja de la segadora y apriete el perno de la
cuchilla gir&ndolo en el sentido en que giran
las manillas del reioj.
o La torsiSn para apretar recomendada es de
35- 40 pies libra&

LA CUCHILLA
Se tiene que tener cuidado de mantenerla
balanceada. Una cuchilla que no est&
balanceada va a producir eventualmente dafio
en la segadora o en el motor.
° La cuchilla puede afilarse con una lima o en
una rueda rectificadorao No trate de afilarla
mientras se encuentra en la segador&
° Para revisar el balance de la cuchilla, clave
un clavo en una viga o en la pared. Deje
alrededor de una pulgada de un clavo recto
expuesto. Ponga el agujero central de fa
cuchilIa sobre la cabeza del clavo. Si la
cuchilla estA balanceada debe permanecer
en la posiciSn horizontal° Si cualquiera de los
extremos de la cuchilta se mueve hacia
abajo, afile el extremo pesado hasta que _sta
quede balanceadao
CAJA
RUEDAS DE IMPULSION
Revise las ruedas de impulsi6n delanteras cada
vez antes de segar, para asegurarse de que se
mueven libremente.
Si las ruedas no giran libremente quiere decir
que hay basura, recortes de c_sped, etco en el
Area de las ruedas de impulsiSn y tienen que
limpiarse para liberarlas.
Es necesario Iimpiar las ruedas de impulsiSn;
revise ambas ruedas delanteras.
° Remueva los tapacubos, las clavijas de
horquilIa y las arandelaso
• Remueva las ruedas de los ajustadores de
las ruedas.
. Remueva la basura y los recortes de c_sped
de dentro de la cubierta contra el polvo, pifiSn
y!o de los dientes de los engranajes de las
ruedas de impuIsiSn.
• Ponga las ruedas de vuelta en su lugar,.
° Si despu_s de limpiar 1as ruedas de
impulsi6n no g(ran libremente, p6ngase en
contacto con su centro de servicio m_s
cercano.
RECOGEDOR
DE CESPED
= El recogedor de c_sped puede ser rociado
con el agua de ta manguera pero tiene que
estar seco cuando se vaya a usar.
° Revise su recogedor de c_sped a menudo
para verificar si est_ dafiado o deteriorado,
Se va a desgastar con el uso normal_ Si se
necesita cambiar el recogedor, cAmbieto
solamente por uno que sea aprobado por el
fabricante. D_ el nQmero del modelo de la
segadora cuando Io ordene.
MOTOR
LUBRICACION
Use solamente aceite de detergente de alta
calidad clasificado con la clasificaciSn SF, SG o
SH de servicio API. Seleccione la calidad de
viscosidad SAE segt]n su temperatura de
operaciSn esperada.
CALIDADES DE VISCOSIDAD DE SAE
DE ENGRANAJES
° Para mantener el sistema de impulsi6n
funcionando en forma adecuada, la caja de
engranajes y el Area alrededor de la
impulsiSn tienen que mantenerse limpias y
sin acumulaciSn de basura. Limpie debajo de
la cubierta de la impulsi6n dos veces por
temporada.,
• La caja de engranajes se Ilena con lubricante
hasta el nive( adecuado en la fAbficao La
Qnica vez que el lubricante necesita atenciSn
es cuando se le ha prestado servicio a la caja
de engranajes.
o Si se necesita lubficante, use solamente

• Remueva ta tapa del dep6sito del aceite;
d6jela a un lado en una superficie limpia.
° Incline la cortadora de c6sped por este
costado tal como se muestra y purgue el
acette en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva la
segadora de atr&s para adelante para
remover todo el aceite que se haya quedado
atrapado dentro det motor.
• Limpie todo el aceite derramado en la
segadora yen el lado de! motor.
° Llene el motor con aceite. LI6nelo solamente
hasta la lfnea de "LLENO" (FULL) en la varilta
indicadora de nivel. NO LO LLENE

PARA CAMBIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE

contrario en que giran las manillas del reloj, hasta

IMPORTANTE:
Para obtener el mejor rende-mento, mantenga la caja de la segador sin
acumulation de cesped y basura, Umpie la parte de

acumule la basura. Un motor tapado funciona
m_ caliente y se acorta su duraci6n.
= Mantenga las superficies acabadas y las ruedas
sin gasolina, aceite, etc.
• No recomendamos el uso de una manguera de
jardfn para limpiarla segadora a menos que el
sistema el6ctrico, el silenciador, el filtro de aire y
el carburador est6n tapados para evitar que les
entre el agua. El agua en el motor puede acortar
la duraci6n de 6ste.
UMPIE DEBAJO DE LA CUBIERTA DE LA
IMPULSION
Limpie debajo de la cubierta de la impulsi6npor Io
menos dos veces cada temporada. Raspe debajo
de la cubierta con un cuchillo para masitla o con una
herramienta parecida, para remover toda
acumulaci6n de c6sped o basura en la parte inferior
de la cubierta de la impulsi6n,
o Ponga la cubierta del filtro de aire dentro del
collar alineando la oreja con la ranura.
o Empuje ta cubierta hacia adentro y g[rela en el
sentido de las manillas del reloj para
apretarta.

DESVIADOR
TRASERO
Se proporciona un desviador trasero, adjunto
entre tas ruedas traseras de su segadora, para
reducir a un mfnimo la posibilidad que objetos
sean tanzados hacia afuera de la parte trasera
de la segadora, en la posici6n en donde se
encuentra el operador. Si se daSa el desviador
debe cambiarseo
PARA REMOVER/CAMBIAR
DE
IMPULSION
LA CORREA
° Remueva la cubierta de la impulsi6n. Remueva
la correa empujando hacia abajo en la polea de
ta caja de engranajes.
o Haga descansar la segadora en su lado con el
filtrode aire y el carburador mirando hacia arriba.
o Remueva la cuchitla.
° Remueva la defensa en contra del desperdicio.
° Remueva la correa de la polea del motor en el
cigueSal.
o Instale la correa nueva siguiendo los pasos
antedores en el orden inverso.
° Siempre use la correa aprobada por la f,f_brtca
para asegurarse que calce y dure.
° Para cambiar de la posici6n mediana baja a
mediana alta, la secci6n supedor y la inferior
del mango tendr&n que darse vuetta°
° Remueva las abrazaderas del cable.
° Remueva los controles y la barra de control
que exige la presencia del operador del
mango supedor,
° Remueva las clavijas de horquilla.
= Desconecte et mango infei'ior de los puntales
del mango
° De vuelta el mango y vuelva a montar las
clavijas de horquilla que se habfan removido.
° Dirija el(los) cables(s) por debajo de la varilla
transversal de la palanca inferior y vuetva a
montar los controles y la barra de controles
que exige la presencia del operador en el
mango superior,
PRECAUClON:
La barra de control que exige
la presencia del operador tiene que pivotear
libremente para permitir el enganche de la
cuchiUaifreno cuando se suelta la barra de
control. No apdete demasiado los sujetadores
que sujetan a los controles al mango superior°
° Para cambiar de la posici6n de mediana baja
a atta solamente se tendr& que dar vuelta la
secci6n del mango supedor.
o Para cambiar de la posici6n mediana baja a
baja, sofamente se tendrA que dar vuelta la
secci6n del mango inferior.

servicio autorizado para repararla y/o ajustarla

• Limpie toda la segadora (Vea "L1MPIEZA" en
la secci6n de Responsabilidades del Cliente
de este manual).
o Lubrfquela seg_n se muestra en la secciSn
de Responsabilidades del Cliente de este
manual,
• AsegQrese de que todas las tuercas y clavijas
y todos los pernos y tomiltos estAn apretados
en foma segura. Inspeccione las partes que
se mueven para vedficar si est_in da5adas,
quebradas o desgastadas. C_.mbielas si es
necesario.
° Retoque todas las superficies que est_n
oxidadas o con la pintura picada; use una lija
antes de pintar..
MANGO
Puede doblar el mango de su segadora para
almacenarla.
o Apriete los extremos inferiores del mango
inferior entre si hasta que el mango inferior
quede separado del punta! del mango, luego
muAvalo hacia adelante.
o Suelte los pernos de montaje del mango
superior to suficiente como para permitir que
el mango superior se pueda doblar hacia
atrAs.

Cuando doble el mango para

SISTEMA
DE COMBUSTIBLE
IMPORTANTE:
Es importante evitar que se
formen depositos de goma an partes
fundamentales del sistema de combustible tales
como el carburador, el filtro del combustible, la
manguera del combustible o en el estanque
durante el almacenamiento, La experincia
tambien end!ca que los combustibles
Mezclados con alcohol (conocido como gasohol
o que tienen etanof o metanol) pueden atraer
humedad, Io queconduce a la separacion y a fa
formacion de acidos durante el
almacenamlento. La gasolina acdica puede
danar el sistema de combustible de un motor
durante el periodo de almacenamiento.
• Drone et estanque de combustible.
° Haga arrancar el motor y d_jelo funcionar
hasta que las Ifneas del combustible y el
carburador est_n vacfos.
° Nunca use los productos para limpieza del
carburador o del motor en el estanque de
combustible pues se pueden producir daSos
permanentes.
• Use combustible nuevo la pr6xima
temporada.
AV1SO: El estabilizador de combustible es una
alternativa aceptable para reducir a un mi'nimo
la formaci6n de dep6sitos de goma en el
combustible durante el perfodo de
afmacenamientoo Agregue estabilizador a la
gasolina en el estanque de combustible o en el
envase para et almacenamiento, Siempre siga
la proporciSn de mezcla que se encuentra en el
envase det estabilizador_ Haga funcionar el

motor por Io menos 10 minutos despu_s de
agregar el estabtlizador, para permitir que este
Iiegue al carburador. No drene la gasolina del
estanque de gasolina y el carburador si se est_
usando estabilizador de combustible,
ACEITE
DEL MOTOR
Drene el aceite (con el motor caliente) y
c_.mbielo con aceite de motor limpio, (Vea
"MOTOR" en la secci6n de Responsabilidades
del Cliente de este manual.)
ClLINDRO
o Remueva ta bujia.
° Vacfe una onza (29 ml) de aceite a trav_s del
agujero de la bujfa en el cilindro.
° Tire ta manilta de arranque lentamente unas
cuantas veces para distribuir el aceiteo
= Vuelva a montar la nueva bujfa.
OTROS
° No guarde la gasolina de una temporada a ia
otra.
IDENTIFICACION
• Cambie el envase de la gasolina si se
empieza a oxidar,. La oxidaci6n y/o la mugre
en su gasolina producir&n problemas.
° Si es posible, guarde su unidad en un recinto
cerrado y cubrala para pro1_egerla contra el
polvo y la mugreo
• Cubra su unidad con un forro protector
adecuado que no retenga ia humedado No
use pl&stico. El pt&stico no puede respirar, Io
que permite la formaci6n de condensaci6n, Io
que producir& la oxidaci6n de su unidad.
IMPORTANTE;
Nunca cubra la segadora
nientras el motor y las areas de escape todavia
estan calientes.
PRECAUClON:
Nunca almacene la segadora
con gasolina en el estanque dentro de un
edificio en donde los gases pueden alcanzar
una llama expuesta o una chispa. Permita que
se enfrfe el motor antes de almacenada en
alg_n recinto cerrado.
