3A. MAKING IT FIT
You are now ready to draw in the units of your new kitchen on your plan. Use adjustable corner
units to take up space and fill in the “gaps”.
To ensure that all the space is used to best advantage, and that there are no “gaps”:
• Firstly experiment with different combinations of cabinets, including wine racks.
• Use Corner Conversion Units which can be adjusted to take up from 0–200mm
(1027–1227mm from wall).

HOW TO INSTALL
YOUR KITCHEN
1R
emove the old kitchen – Make sure that you
use someone to help with heavy cabinets,
and turn off the power and water before you
start. Remove old wall and ceiling linings.
2S
ecure services – Use a registered plumber
or electrician to remove tapware, lights and
power points. This is also the time to plumb
or wire in new services, including rangehood
ducting.
3M
easure the site accurately – Do a final and
accurate measure, check floor levels, walls
and corners are square.
4C
omplete alterations – Undertake any
alterations and prepare the floor. Check
with your builder or local authority well
beforehand to see if you need any permits.
5 P ut in new wall linings – Place new
insulation, wall linings, scotia mouldings and
skirting. Do a double check to make sure you
have all your services in place before you
start. For the best finish it is often best to use
a professional Plasterboard Stopper.
6A
ssemble cabinets – Assemble your kitchen
cabinets following the instructions provided
with each cabinet.
Installing your own kitchen can
provide you with an immense level
of personal satisfaction. However, it
is important to replace existing wall
linings, particularly if it is an older
house.
This is an opportunity to reframe
and insulate, and to provide
surfaces that are level to ensure
you get the best finish for your
new kitchen. Also, while you have
no kitchen cabinets in place, it’s
a great time to renovate the floor,
alter walls, or replace or create new
window openings to improve the
lighting in your kitchen.
Your pantry, appliances and food
preparation surfaces are the most
important in the kitchen. They
determine how well your kitchen
works and meets your needs.
It is best to have these appliances
available when tradesmen are
installing services, so they can read
the instructions and ensure special
requirements are taken into account.

7 L evel Cabinets – Locate each cabinet and
check the height and level. Some adjustment
to the adjustable feet on each cabinet may
be required.
8 L ine up kitchen components – Place all
cabinets in their correct location. Ensure
they are the same height and level. Once
this is done, screw cabinets to the wall and
together as required
9M
easure and position rangehood – If you
are installing a rangehood, measure the
space and position of the rangehood for
fixing. A good tip here is to make sure you
have a suitable framing place to secure the
rangehood in step 4.
10 P ositioning the bench top – The most
important thing is to take your time and
follow the instructions. Ensure that the
bench top is level and fits squarely against
the walls and into the corners. Use a high
quality sealer to finish off wall joins.
11 Installing toe-kicks – Toe-kicks can be
installed using feet clips. Take time to
measure lengths twice or more before you
make any cuts. If using an aluminium toekick you may need to use a special metal
cutting blade.
12 S
inks and tapware – To ensure the best fit,
the sink, tapware and wastes should be
installed by your plumber once you have
the cabinets and bench tops in place.
13 A
ppliances – Choose your kitchen
appliance and ensure that all its installation
requirements are met to ensure effective
operation.
14 F ridge and cabinets – Ensure you select a
fridge that meets your current and future
needs. Also, allow sufficient space and
ventilation for the appliance to operate to
the manufacturer’s specifications.
15 P antry and bench tops – The age-old axiom
that “you can never have enough storage”
is true. Make sure you plan sufficient
storage to meet your needs and also
convenient to the food preparation areas.
