6.2 Problems and Future work
Although both the SGDBM and the CSFS were implemented, they are elementary and
not very complete. Some questions are still open. The sections below will discuss some
parts of the implementation that may be improved in the future.
6.2.1 Future Work for Secure DBMS
The SGDBM was implemented based on GDBM in Linux. It is functionally restricted by
the internal limitation of the GDBM system itself. Because the GDBM in Linux is an
elementary database management system and does not provide all the functions that a
DBMS is supposed to give. Firstly, it does not support backup and recovery. Secondly, it
does not provide index management. Lastly, it does not support all kinds of objects that
usually exist in a commercial DBMS. Each individual GDBM database is, in fact, a table
consisting of only two columns, which is a key / data pair.
With the above limitations of GDBM, even though the goal to develop a Secure DBMS
was accomplished, it is just an elementary secure database management system and can
be used only by some not-too-complicated database applications. In the future work, this
database system can be improved by adding more database functions. Or, a new Secure
DBMS can be created by applying the approach of establishing a secure database system
at low level.
