DEDICATION
I would like to dedicate this thesis to my Fox and Smith families, both of whom
have always been tremendously encouraging and supportive of my educational
endeavors. I am honored to be the first in either family to receive a graduate degree in a
field I care about so passionately.
To Robyn, my longest and best friend. Despite our differences we have endured
so much together, and I look forward to a time when we will not have to Skype and
phone to catch up. Some people find soul sisters; I am so lucky to have you as a real one
and want to share my daily life with you.
To Toby, the best surprise a family could ask for. You have grown so quickly into
such an amazing person. I see so much of myself in you – keep reaching for the stars.
They will deliver you to a better life than you can dream. I can’t wait to see you through
hormones, girlfriends and self-discovery.
To Mom, who passed on the inner chemist. I am so glad you have found work you
love and to which you can contribute so much. Keep me posted about that new farm
we’re starting! I cannot express how much I appreciate your enduring financial and
emotional support, though I’m sure you’re glad to have your basement back!
To Dad, my student-in-arms. I am so proud of you for stepping up and going back
to school when the world decided that 30 years of experience “wasn’t good enough”.
Doubtless that experience has helped tremendously with the process of getting that
degree! I can’t wait to be at YOUR graduation day soon!
