The Isle Of Lewis Chessmen

Own a faithful reproduction of the earliest known chessmen! This chess set is a genuine replica of the legendary Isle of Lewis Chessmen, which hold a place
in chess history like no other. The original chessmen were discovered in 1831 when the sea carried away a sandbank on the Isle of Lewis (Scotland) and
uncovered a mysterious building that had been long buried under the sand. A peasant working nearby entered the building and discovered what he thought
was a collection of Elves and Gnomes. The superstitious highlander flung down his spade and fled home in horror. He was later induced by his wife to return
to the spot and take the figures home. He sold them to a local collector who realized they were chessmen. There were 93 pieces in all belonging to at least
eight different sets; 82 are now housed in the British Museum and the rest in the National Museum, Edinburgh. It is believed that the Isle of Lewis Chessmen,
as they are now known, date back to the 12th century and are of Scandinavian origin. Experts are unanimous in regarding them as the most astonishing
collection of ancient chessmen in existence.

The Celtic Chessmen

The Celtic people were inhabitants of Western Europe, particularly Ireland,
Wales, Brittany and the Highlands of Scotland and were subjected to raids
by Vikings and Norsemen. This chess set is the story of a battle between
the Irish King, Brian Boru, and the Viking invaders and took place in 1014
AD at Clontarf, near Dublin. Although the Celts managed to defeat the
Viking invaders, their King, Brian Boru, was slain. This chess set features
principal characters involved in the battle and depicts Celtic designs and
artifacts of the period. The skill and workmanship of the Celtic tribes was
demonstrated by their artistic and unique designs, reproduced here in this

The Ancient Greek Gods are well represented and portrayed in this
impressive chess set. Zeus is the king, presiding over the whole social
order and Mount Olympus. He is the father of gods and men and the most
important of his fellow deities. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, daughter
of Zeus, reigns as queen. Asklepios, the god of healing and medicine, son
of Apollo, serves as bishop. The Centaur, the part horse part man creature
from Greek legend, represents the knight. The Corinthian column of the
classical order was selected as the rook to create balance in the set. Pan, the
gods of shepherds and countryside, represented with horns, legs of a goat
and playing the pipes, serves as the pawn. 6.25” king height

between Christians and Muslims. This conflict has continued intermittently
for over a thousand years, but it is the period between 1095 and 1292 that
has captured our imagination because of the exploits of the Crusader
knights. These chessmen represent the Christian side led by King Richard
I of England, known as Richard the Lionheart, in combat with the Muslim
armies led by Saladin. This chess set concentrates particularly on the Third
great Crusade led by King Richard I of England, who in 1189 joined King
Philip II of France in an effort to recapture the holy city of Jerusalem. 5” king

This gorgeous Chess set captures a pivotal moment in Scottish History - The
Battle of Bannockburn. Scottish forces, starving and vastly outnumbered,
defeated the English army in what would become the final battle of the
First War of Scottish Independence. The Scots are lead by Robert the Bruce,
King of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth De Burgh, who had recently been
reunited with her husband after being held captive by the English for over
8 years. The English are lead by King Edward II, who reigned from 1284 until
1327. The epic battle took place on June 24, 1314. This set depicts the same

Delivery and Processing
Our shipping and processing charges are intended to compensate our
company for processing your order, handling and packaging the products you
purchase, delivering them to you, and covering related materials and overhead.
Most purchases are shipped from our warehouses and arrive within 5-7 business days of the receipt of your order. If any delay is anticipated, we will notify
you by mail or email. Some items are shipped directly from our suppliers and
may take longer to arrive. Also, items ordered together may not arrive in the
same box. Please be aware that some heavy or bulky items can not be shipped
outside the United States.
We provide delivery service with both FedEx and United States Postal Service.
We charge the same fees for both services. As a default, we use FedEx unless
your package is being shipped to a post office box, military address or you have
a personal preference for United States Postal Service. All packages are shipped
via trackable and insured methods.
Shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, Military and U.S. Territories
Items shipped to Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. Territories are delivered by United
States Postal Service at our regular shipping and processing fees, with an
additional charge of $15.
Delivery and Processing Surcharges
Because some items may be bulky, large or heavy, they have a deliver and
processing surcharge listed in parentheses ($00) after the price. This charge is
in addition to the regular delivery and processing charges in the rate schedules.

USCF Sales Return Policy
The Item Return Policy of USCF Sales depends on the item/s that were
ordered. There are numerous classes of products that have their own
unique return policy. Please review the list below to find the return
policy that best describes the item/s you wish to return. Once you have
reviewed the policies and confirmed that your purchase is eligible for return, please contact us for specific return instructions, including an RMA
(Return Merchandise Authorization) Number.
Item Returns - Computer Software and DVDs
Computer Software and DVDs can only be returned or exchanged if the
product is in its original, shrinkwrapped packaging and has not been installed or used in any way. Once you open the packaging of a Computer
Software or DVD title, it can only be exchanged for the same title if the
original media is defective. There are NO exceptions to this rule.
Item Returns - Custom Orders
Custom Orders, such as items that have been engraved or printed to your
specifications, can not be return/exchanged under any circumstances. Any
fees associated with the customization of that item are not refundable.
Item Returns - All Other Items
You have three weeks (21 calendar days) from the date your package is
shipped to notify us that you wish to return an item. Once we have been
notified of your intent to return an item, you have two weeks (14 calendar
days) from the date of notification to have the item returned to us and in
our possession.
All shipping charges, including those that you paid to originally receive
the package, are NOT refundable.
The item being returned and all of its packaging / accessories / components / documentation must be returned in the exact condition (e.g. unused) that they were received. The items must be packed carefully and
sent via a method that is trackable, has signature required for delivery
and is insured. The shipping carrier that we recommend is FedEx.
We are not responsible for any damage or loss that is incurred while the
package is in transit. That is why we require the package to be insured.
If the item being returned was part of a promotional purchase, such as
eligible for receiving a free gift, you must return all of the items that were
part of that promotional purchase, including the free gift.
If the item being returned was part of a free shipping promotion, you will
be responsible for the original shipping costs for that item, which will be
deducted from any return or credit owed.
All Returns are subject to a 15% restocking fee, unless the item is exchanged.
We will waive the restocking fees on items exchanged for an item of equal or
greater value.
A RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number is required for all returns. We will refuse all packages which do not have an RMA # clearly
marked on the outside of the package. Please make sure it is CLEARLY
WRITTEN AND VISIBLE.
Premium membership provides a printed copy of Chess Life (monthly) or Chess Life for Kids
(bimonthly) plus all other benefits of regular membership. Youth provides bimonthly Chess
Life, Scholastic bimonthly Chess Life for Kids, others listed above monthly Chess Life. Visit our
