machinenow pluggedinto the first. lf a third machinewere to be pluggedinto the second,it
too would receivepower. This modular conceptwill not overloada circuit becauseof the
small amount of electricityactuallybeingusedby eachmachine. For example,a system
composedol two FibrometerTimers.andtwo Thermal Prep Blockswould usea maximum
current of 3.0 amperes.
The modular concept is expandedstill further by pluggingthe Automatic Pipettecord directly into the connectoron the front of the Fibrometer.

MechanicalAction - Probe Drop
The Fibrometercan be activatedmanuallyby depressing
the TIMER bar or automatically
when the Automatic Pipettehasdeliveredits last bit of liquid into the reactioncup. There is
a built-in delay of 0.5 to 1.8 secondsbeforethe probe drops into the reactionwell. The delay
allowsfor the removalof the pipette tip from the reactioncup. This delay will not affect the
test results.
After the built-in delay, the sensingprobe assemblydrops into the reactionwell. Beforethe
testingof a sample, the probe is placedin its rbst position abovethe reactionwell. In this
position, the probe restsupon the probe support lever. This leveris mechanicallyconnected
to a solenoid. When the delay circuit energizes
the solenoid,the leversnapsback insidethe
probe sleeveto deprivethe probe of its support and causesit to drop. The drop placesthe
electrodesinto the proper position insidea FibroTubecup in the reactionwell.
MechanicalAction - ElectrodeMovement
Movement of the sweepingelectrodeis suppliedby a segmentedcam that rotatesat 60 rpm
and raisesthe probe foot every 0.5 second. This sweepsthe electrodethrough the reaction
mixture every one-halfsecond.The electrodemovesin the desiredellipticalpattern through
the reactionmixture. This can be viewedas a four step process:
1) The moving electrodesweepsthrough the reaction mixture.
2l Theelectrode liftscompletely outof the reactionmixtureto a point 1.27 mm above
the liquid level.(NOTE.:This is why the FibroTube cup is of such importafice iri the
FibroSystem.Useof thesecups en$rresproper liquid level.)
3) The electrodebecomeselectricallyactive.
4) The electrodeis returned to the liquid level and snreepsthrough the reaction mixtule
to completean ellipticalpattern.
Clot Detection
As the initialf ibrin strandformsin the reactionmixture,it is pickedup on the next sweep
of the movingelectrode(seeFigure2-31.Whenthis electrodeis liftedto a point1.27mm above

Power Supply
The Thermal Prep Block Tay be operatedindependentlyby attachingthe unit by a three-wire
line cortJ(not supplied)to any approved11O-volt,three-wiregroundedreceptacle.
Most usersconnectthe Thermal PrepBlock directly to the Fibrometer. Both of thesemachines
havebeendesignedto operatein a modular arrangement.A singlepower sourcewill operate
both machines. The secondmachinein line will receivepower evenwhen the first machineis
switchedoff.
Safety
The Thermal Brep Block is certifiedfor safety by the Los AngelesCounty Testing Laboratorieg
and is listedby the CanadianStandardsAssociation(CSA).
DO NOT separateor connect the Thermal Prep Block to the Fibrometer while the line cord is
connectedto the power receptacle.A Shock Hazardexists when doing so.
