ABOUT SUSENAS 1999 AND DATA FILES Indonesia Social and Economic Survey (Susenas) was a nationwide survey conducted to collect information on social and economics indices. It serves as a main source of monitoring the social and economic progress in the society. Susenas was conducted on an annual basis since 1963. Since 1992, in addition to a basic social and economic questionnaire (core), a deeper focused questionnaire was introduced separately (module). The core covers basic information of household and individual characteristics on health, death, education/literacy, employment, fertility and family planning, housing, and household expenditure. The core questionnaire is asked annually with only slight modification in subsequent years. Susenas 1999 core covers 205,747 households and is designed to be representative up to district/municipality levels. The module is intended to gather more detailed information on specific topics, especially on data that changed less frequently than yearly. There are several modules that are conducted alternately i.e. consumption module and household income, household welfare, social culture, travel and crime, and the health, nutrition, education and housing modules. In 1999, in addition to three‐year cycle of Consumption, Expenditure and Income Module, there are other modules as follows: 1. Household Consumption/Expenditure Listing (M) 2. Household Iodized Salt Listing (GY) 3. Prepared Food and Beverages Listings (LPK) 4. Social Safety Net Survey ‐ Midwife in the Village (BDD) 5. Social Safety Net Survey ‐ Puskesmas (PSK) 6. Social Safety Net ‐ Social Economic Characteristics of Household and Household Members (RT) Social Safety Net modules was designed to monitor the impact of SSN Program that was introduced in 1998 to address the negative impacts of economic crisis occurred since 1997. However, in Susenas 1999 datasets held by ANU, data on Household Iodized Salt (GY), Prepared Food and Beverages Listings (LPK), Social Safety Net Survey ‐ Midwife in the Village (BDD), and Social Safety Net Survey ‐ Puskesmas (PSK), are not available. Sampling Method The SUSENAS data is collected using a stratified multi‐stage cluster sampling with two strata (urban and rural area) for each district/municipality. Within each district/municipality, a 2‐stage cluster sampling is applied to urban areas, while rural areas sampling follows a 3‐stage cluster sampling design. Urban areas are divided into census blocks (CBs), each comprises of about 100 households. The first stage of the sampling comprises choosing a number of CBs using linear systematic 2
sampling. From each selected census blocks, sixteen households are selected for interview by using linear systematic sampling. For rural areas, the numbers of sub districts (Kecamatan) were selected from the list using the “proportional to size” (PPS) principle, so that the probability of a sub‐district being selected is proportional to its size (i.e. number of households). From each selected sub‐district, a number of census blocks were selected. Then, from each of these selected CBs sixteen households are selected for interview by using linear systematic sampling Questionnaires There are three sets of questionnaires in Susenas 1999 held by ANU: 1. Core questionnaire (form VSEN99.K) which constitutes of questions regarding basic social and economic conditions. The information gathered from this questionnaire often referred as Susenas Core. Susenas core was conducted annually with slight changes of questions (addition, deletion or modification) over the years. Data from this core component is representative up to district/city level. The sampling units in Susenas Core are household as well as individual representing household and individual characteristic, respectively. 2. Module Questionnaire on household consumption/expenditure (form VSEN99.M) which constitutes of detail questions on consumption/expenditure and income of the household (referred as Susenas Module). 3. Module Questionnaire on Social Safety Net Program (form SSN99.RT) which contains questions about social economic characteristics of household and household members related to social safety net program. 3
