Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to apply Java technology to facilitate the creation of more reliable, portable, flexible and logical hardware control systems. This has been achieved by integrating Java tools and libraries throughout the development processes of several software projects. In particular, the development of enhancements to the Automated Patrol Telescope control software was conducted. The Java language has been used to develop both sophisticated user interface and hardware control components utilising protocols such as the Simple Network Management Protocol. These enhancements have been seamlessly integrated into the Java Automation System to provide distributed control of the Automated Patrol Telescope. The Spectrum Scanner application has also been developed in Java to provide software control of a radio receiver through the RS232 Serial protocol, capable of data visualisation using the VisAD toolkit. This thesis documents these achievements and presents the possibility of integrating these advancements with other systems in the future. 3
