PREPARATION Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto beused.Removeall doormats,newspapers, sleds,boards,wiresandotherforeignobjects,which couldbetrippedoveror thrownbythe auger/impeller. Safe Handling of Gasoline: Toavoid personalinjuryor property damageuseextreme carein handling gasoline.Gasolineisextremely flammable andthe vaporsareexplosive. Seriouspersonalinjurycan occurwhen gasolineis spilledon yourselfor your clotheswhich canignite. Washyourskinandchangeclothesimmediately. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer. Extinguishall cigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesofignition. Neverfuel machineindoors. Neverremovegascapor addfuel whilethe engineishot or running. Allowengineto coolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling. Neveroverfillfuel tank.Filltankto nomorethan1/2inchbelowbottomof filler neckto providespaceforfuel expansion. Replace gasolinecapandtightensecurely. Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeit off the engineandequipment.Movemachineto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingtheengine. Neverstorethe machineor fuel containerinsidewherethereisanopen flame,sparkor pilot light (e.g.furnace,waterheater,spaceheater,clothes dryeretc.). Allow machineto coolat least5 minutesbeforestoring. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eyeshieldsduringoperationandwhile performinganadjustmentor repairto protectyoureyes.Thrownobjects whichricochetcancauseseriousinjury to the eyes. Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleor ona truckor trailerbedwitha plastic liner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthe groundawayfrom yourvehiclebefore filling. Donotoperatewithoutwearingadequatewinteroutergarments.Donot wear jewelry,longscarves or otherlooseclothing,whichcouldbecomeentangledin movingparts.Wearfootwearwhichwill improvefootingonslipperysurfaces. Ifpossible,removegas-powered equipmentfromthe truckor trailerand refuelit on theground.Ifthis isnot possible,then refuelsuchequipment on atrailerwith a portablecontainer,ratherthanfromagasolinedispenser nozzle. Usea groundedthree-wkeextensioncordandreceptacleforall machines with electricstartengines. Disengage all controlleversbeforestartingthe engine. Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhileengineisrunning,except wherespecificallyrecommended inthe operator'smanual. Letengineandmachineadjustto outdoortemperaturebeforestartingto clearsnow. Keepthe nozzleincontactwith the rim ofthe fuel tankor containeropening at all timesuntil fuelingiscomplete.Donot usea nozzlelock-opendevice. OPERATION CLEARING A CLOGGED DISCHARGE CHUTE Donot put handsor feetnearrotatingparts,inthe auger/impellerhousing or chuteassembly. Contactwith the rotatingpartscanamputatehandsand feet. Handcontactwith the rotatingimpellerinsidethe dischargechuteisthe most commoncauseof injuryassociated with snowthrowers.Neveruseyourhandto cleanout the dischargechute. Theauger/impellercontrolleverisasafetydevice.Neverbypassitsoperation. Doingsomakesthe machineunsafeandmaycausepersonalinjury. Toclearthe chute: a. SHUTTHEENGINE OFF! Thecontrolleversmustoperateeasilyin bothdirectionsandautomatically returnto the disengagedpositionwhenreleased. b. Wait 10secondsto besurethe impellerbladeshavestopped rotating. Neveroperatewith amissingor damagedchuteassembly.Keepall safety devicesin placeandworking. c. Alwaysuseaclean-outtool, not yourhands. MAINTENANCE Neverrunanengineindoorsor inapoorlyventilatedarea.Engineexhaust containscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas. & STORAGE Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperationregularly. Referto the maintenanceandadjustmentsectionsof thismanual. Donot operatemachinewhileunderthe influence of alcoholor drugs. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting machinedisengageall control leversandstopthe engine.Waituntil the auger/impellercometo acomplete stop.Disconnect the sparkplugwire andgroundagainstthe engineto preventunintendedstarting. Mufflerandenginebecomehot andcancauseaburn.Donot touch.Keep childrenaway. Exercise extremecautionwhenoperatingonor crossinggravelsurfaces.Stay alertforhiddenhazardsor traffic. Check boltsandscrewsforpropertightness atfrequentintervals to keepthe machine insafeworkingcondition. Also,visuallyinspectmachine foranydamage. Exercise cautionwhenchangingdirectionandwhileoperatingonslopes. Planyoursnow-throwingpatternto avoiddischargetowardswindows, walls,carsetc.Thus,avoidingpossiblepropertydamageor personalinjury causedbyaricochet. Donot changethe enginegovernorsettingor over-speed the engine.The governorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeedof the engine. Snowthrowershaveplatesandskidshoesaresubjectto wearanddamage. Foryoursafetyprotection,frequentlycheckall componentsandreplace Preventpossiblepropertydamageor personalinjury fromobjectricochetby planningyoursnowthrowingpatternto avoiddischargetowardswindows, walls,cars,etc. with originalequipmentmanufacturer's (OEM)partsonlyaslistedinthe Partspagesofthis Operator's Manual.Useof partswhichdo not meetthe originalequipmentspecifications mayleadto improperperformanceand compromisesafety! Donot overloadmachinecapacitybyattemptingto clearsnowat too fastof arate. Checkcontrolleversperiodicallyto verifythey engageanddisengage properlyandadjust,if necessary. Referto the adjustmentsectioninthis operator'smanualfor instructions. Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityor light. Alwaysbesureof yourfootingandkeepafirm holdon the handles.Walk,neverrun. Disengage powerto the auger/impellerwhen transportingor not in use. Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary. Neveroperatemachineat hightransportspeedsonslipperysurfaces.Look downandbehindandusecarewhenbackingup. Observe properdisposallawsandregulationsforgas,oil,etc.to protectthe environment. If the machineshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe engine, disconnectthe sparkplugwire andgrounditagainstthe engine.Inspect thoroughlyfordamage.Repairanydamagebeforestartingandoperating. Priorto storing,runmachineafewminutesto clearsnowfrom machineand preventfreezeupof auger/impeller. Disengage all controlleversandstopenginebeforeyouleavetheoperating position(behindthe handles).Waituntil the auger/impellercomesto acompletestopbeforeuncloggingthe chuteassembly, makingany adjustments,or inspections. Neverstorethe machineor fuelcontainerinsidewherethereisanopen flame,sparkor pilot light suchasa waterheater,furnace,clothesdryeretc. Neverput yourhandin the dischargeor collectoropenings.Donot unclog chuteassemblywhileengineisrunning.Shutoff engineandremainbehind handlesuntil all movingpartshavestoppedbeforeunclogging. Checkfuel line,tank,cap,andfittings frequentlyforcracksor leaks.Replace if necessary. Useonlyattachmentsandaccessories approvedbythe manufacturer(e.g. wheelweights,tire chains,cabsetc.). According to the Consumer Products SafetyCommission (CPSC) andthe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), thisproducthasanAverageUsefulLife of seven(7)years,or 60 hoursofoperation.Attheendof theAverageUseful Lifehavethemachineinspected annuallybyanauthorizedservicedealerto ensurethatall mechanical andsafetysystemsareworkingproperlyandnot wornexcessively. Failureto dosocanresultinaccidents, injuries or death. Alwaysreferto the operator'smanualforproperinstructionsonoff-season storage. Donot crankenginewithsparkplug removed. Whenstartingengine,pullcordslowlyuntil resistance isfelt, then pull rapidly.Rapidretractionof startercord(kickback)will pullhandandarm towardenginefasterthanyoucanlet go.Brokenbones,fractures,bruisesor sprainscouldresult. 4 DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE Toavoidseriousinjuryor death,donot modify engineinanyway.Tampering with the governorsettingcanleadto arunawayengineandcauseit to operate at unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwith factorysetting of enginegovernor. NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS Engineswhich are certifiedto complywith Californiaandfederal EPA emissionregulations for SORE (SmallOff RoadEquipment)arecertified tooperate on regularunleadedgasoline,and mayincludethe following emissioncontrol systems:EngineModification (EM),OxidizingCatalyst(0C), SecondaryAir injection(SAI)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWC)if soequipped. SPARK ARRESTOR Thismachineisequippedwith an internalcombustionengine andshould not be usedon or near any unimprovedforest-covered,brushcoveredor grass-coveredland unlessthe engine'sexhaustsystemisequippedwith a sparkarrestormeetingapplicable localor state laws (if any). Slipthe recoilstarterropeintotheeyeboltfromthe backofthesnowthrower. SeeFigure10. 5. Securely tightenthe eyebolt andhandleknob. Set-Up FuelRecommendations Operatingthe enginewith E15or E85fuel, an oil/gasoline mixture, dirty gasoline,or gasoline over30 days oldwithout fuel stabilizing additive may result indamageto your engine'scarburetor. Subsequentdamage would not be coveredunderthe manufacturer'swarranty. Protective Sleeve Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedor low leadedto minimizecombustionchamber deposits)with aminimumof 87octane.Gasolinewith upto 10%ethanol(EIO) or 15%MTBE (MethylTertiaryButylEther)canbe used.Neverusean oil/gasoline mixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting dirt, dust,or waterinthe fueltank.DO NOT use E15 or E85 gasoline. Refuelinawell-ventilatedareawith the enginestopped.Donot smokeor allowflamesor sparksinthe areawherethe engineis refueledor where gasolineisstored. Becarefulnot to spillfuelwhen refueling.Spilledfuel orfuel vapormay ignite.If anyfuel isspilled,makesurethe areaisdry beforestartingthe engine. Avoidrepeatedor prolongedcontactwith skinor breathingofvapor. 9 Adding Fuel Useextremecarewhen handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable andthe vaporsareexplosive.Neverfuel the machineindoorsor while the engine ishot or running. Extinguishcigarettes,cigars,pipesandother sourcesof ignition. Alwayskeephandsandfeet dear of equipment moving parts. Donot usea pressurizedstarting fluid. Vaporsareflammable. Removethe gascap,checkthe fuel levelandaddfuel if necessary. Fillthe tank untilthe fuel reaches1/2"belowthe bottomof the filler neckto allow forfuel expansion.Becarefulnotto overfill. Checkingand Adding Oil Theengine isshippedwithout oil in the engine.Youmustfill the engine with oil beforeoperating. Runningthe engine with insufficientoil can causeseriousengine damageandvoid the productwarranty. 1. Placethe snowthrowerona flat, levelsurface. 2. Removethe oil filler cap/dipstickandwipethe dipstickclean.SeeFigure11. f )il FillerCap/ bstick J Figure11 3. Insertthe cap/dipstickinto the oil filler neck,but do not screwit in. 4. Removethe oil filler cap/dipstick.Ifthe levelis low,slowlyaddoil until oil levelregistersbetweenhigh(H)andlow (L),Figure11. NOTE:Donotoverfill.Overfillingwith oil maycausesmoking,hardstarting, or sparkplugfouling. 5. Replace andtightencap/dipstickfirmly beforestartingengine. NOTE:DONOTallowoil levelto fall belowthe "L" markon the dipstick.Doing somayresultin equipmentmalfunctionsor damage. Therecoilstarterhandleisusedto start theengine. Choke Control Gas Cap Removethegascapto addfuel. Activatingthe chokecontroJ dosesthechokepJateoncarburetorandaidsJnstarting engine. Thechoke lever slides between the "UNI _and C,OKEM positions. Doingsomaycauseitto break. _!_ 0 Auger Primer Whenengaged,the augerrotationdrawssnowinto the augerhousingandthrows it out the dischargechute.Rubberpaddleson the augeralsoaidin propellingthe snowthrowerastheycomeincontactwiththe pavement. Pressing the primer,makingsureto coverthe venthole whenpushing,forcesfuel directlyinto the engine's carburetorto aidincold-weatherstarting. Meets ANSISafety Standards CraftsmanSnowThrowersconformtothe safetystandardof the AmericanNationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI). 11 Insertignitionkeyinto slot.Makesureit snapsinto place.Donot attemptto turn the key.SeeFigure13. AugerControl Located ontheupperhandle,theaugercontrolhandleisusedtoengageanddisengage drivetotheauger.Squeeze thecontrolhandleagainsttheupperhandleto engagethe auger;release it todisengage. Muffler Engineexhaustexitsthe engineviathe muffler. ChuteRotation Control Thechuterotatecontrolislocatedinthecenterofthecontrolpanelandcontrols the directionsnowisthrown.Depress thebuttonandrotatethechuterotationcontroltothe rightto turnthe chutetothe rightandrotatetotheleft toturnthechuteto theleft. ChuteAssembly Thepitchofthedischarge chutecontrolstheangleatwhichthesnowisthrown.Loosen thewingknobonthesideofthe discharge chutebeforepivotingthe discharge chute upwardordownward.Retighten the knoboncethedesiredpositionhasbeenachieved. ShavePlate Theshaveplatemaintainscontactwith the pavementasthe snowthroweris propelled,allowingsnowcloseto the pavement'ssurfaceto bedischarged. Oil Fill/Dipstick Figure13 NOTE:Theenginecannotstart unlessthe keyisfully insertedinto the ignitionswitch. Engineoil levelcanbe checkedandoil addedthroughthe oil fill.
