Letter from the Chairman
I had the pleasure to attend the opening of a juried photography exhibit, Looking at
our Landscape, at Crystal Bridges at the Massey on April 2, along with PSNWA board
members, Eric Molle, John Baltz, Sean Doyle, Joe Sparks, and Pat Sides. The exhibit
featured photographers from all over Northwest Arkansas, including several members
of PSNWA! Congratulations to winners, Patrick Lanford, Joseph Sparks, Bill Dark,
Sean Doyle, Kathy Mayhue, Harold Hull and Don Lowe! Also attending were Bob
King, Linda Whitaker, Bob Shull, and PSNWA friends and speakers, Don House and
Tom Ewart. Don was one of the exhibit’s jury members. The exhibit will remain on display through May 30, 2010. I encourage you to go see these wonderful photographs!
It’s May, and I would normally be encouraging you to sign up for MAPSym. This past
year, however, the leadership of MAPSym decided to hold the event every other year.
So, that means we won’t have a symposium this year! (It will be back next year, though,
never fear.) What do photographers in Northwest Arkansas do in the spring for education and fun without this major event? If you’ve attended before, you know that one of MAPSym’s highlights is the night
model shoot. PSNWA decided to host its’ own Night Model Shoot on Dickson Street in Fayetteville on April 24. I hope
you took advantage of this fun event. Don’t forget to post some images from the shoot on the PSNWA web site gallery, if
you did attend this event.
While you’re looking for fun things to do, be sure to visit www.psnwa.org to check for upcoming events. We have a
group going to Hallett Motor Speedway in Oklahoma on May 23, and there’s room for more to join us. There are other
trips scheduled throughout the Summer and into the Fall with camping, hot air balloons and military aircraft at Drake
Field in Fayetteville.
We always have a full slate of classes and studio model shoots where you can learn more and also expand your image
portfolio. This year, we’re also adding workshops to the mix. Check the www.psnwa.org site to stay abreast of what’s
happening.
Finally, you’ve probably seen some notes on the PSNWA Yahoo group to update your profile and image portfolio on the
web site. Let me add my voice to the chorus. This is a really valuable way for us to get to know each other, our interests
and talents. It’s also a great opportunity to add some of your own photographs to your own portfolio gallery. Please take
the time to share with the rest of PSNWA who you are and what you like to photograph.
I hope to see you at Whole Hog Café the first Thursday of next month!

PSNWA Members Yard Sale - June 5th
You the PSNWA membership asked for it, so we have
the first ever PSNWA Member Yard Sale for photographic
equipment, accessories and related items!
8:00 a.m. - Noon in the PSNWA lobby.
How does it work? PSNWA will provide white tags similar
to the ones you see at flea markets. You will bring your
items either to the meeting prior to the sale or the morning
of the sale and place a white tag with your name and price
you want for the item. PSNWA will station volunteers at the
door to collect the money for the item and the tag. After the
sale the money will be distributed back based on collected
tags.
So start cleaning out your closets for those old lenses,
cameras, filters, camera
bags, tripods, books,
lights, or any other
photographic
related
items or items to assist
with photography (such
as books about trails
that may assist in
finding places to take
pictures.)
Please register online if you plan to bring
one or more items so we can make proper preparations.
Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions by
writing [email protected].
Group & Family Portraits Webinar by Bert Behnke
It’s not rocket-science, but Bert will de mystify the group
portrait with ideas and examples of what creates a great
group portrait. Design, equipment, posing and lighting will
be discussed as well as shown via actual portraits. He’ll
explain the 8 levels he uses to create a space and a place
for each individual in a group portrait. He’ll also discuss
how with only an arm chair or two, you can pose almost any
group, even 20 adults! Wednesday, June 23rd, 7:00 pm
To register, go to the Webinar section at: www.psnwa.org

Shooting a Motor Race
By: Sean Doyle
On May 23rd, PSNWA will be visiting the Hallett Motor
Racing Circuit in Oklahoma. Since there is no longer any
road racing tracks in this area, this may be a very new
experience for many of us. Below are some things to
consider, along with suggestions for camera settings
to get you started:
Challenges of Shooting a Motor Race
PSNWA members will be allowed to
shoot in the pits. For this article, we will
focus on the challenges of shooting race
cars that are out on the track including
shooting objects that are moving at
a high rate of speed and possible
changes in light conditions.
Equipment Considerations
• Camera
• ISO 400. This should produce shutter speeds around
1/1000,or higher, which should be fast enough to freeze the
action. ISO’s of 800 or 1600 will increase shutter speed,
but could produce grainy results. An ISO of 200 will reduce
shutter speeds by half. And ISO 100 will reduce shutter
speeds by another half.
• For “Panning” shots (race car frozen in
motion, but background blurry) you will
want a shutter speed around 1/80 to 1/100.
For that, try reducing ISO to 100. If that
doesn’t work, switch to shutter priority,
and set the shutter speed to your desired
speed.
• IS (Image Stabilization). If your lens has
that feature, then use setting number 2. My
owners’ manual says this setting is perfect for
panning shots.
• Focus Mode: Al Servo. This setting allows the
camera
to continuously focus while tracking a

moving car, by holding down the shutter button
half way. This works regardless if the car is
moving toward you, or away from you.
• Tripod or Mono-Pod to steady the camera while panning
• Shooting Mode: Continuous. This setting allows you to

conditions may require some adjustments to get the best
results.

are available on your camera.
• Varied lenses for shooting in the
pits and long lenses for shooting the
cars during the races
Have You Completed Your PSNWA Profile?
One of the many benefits of being a member of PSNWA is
the opportunity to complete a profile of yourself and post
some pictures to the PSNWA web site.
Completing your profile is easy, and only takes a few
minutes. Your profile will include the area’s of photography
that interest you most, along with an opportunity to share
a bit about your background, and let other PSNWA get to
know you. In addition to your profile, you also have the
opportunity to post photographs you have taken to your
own personal portfolio.
Please take a few minutes and setup or update your
information at www.psnwa.org.
Do You have News for the PRISM?
Do you have an article or news for the PRISM or PSNWA
web site? Then now is the time to let us know! We are
currently accepting articles for the 2010 newsletters and
any photography-related news from PSNWA members
in our region is greatly appreciated. E-mail Sean at
[email protected].
