Part III. Reading Comprehension ( 20’ )
Directions: In this section you will read two passages. Each one is followed by a number of questions
about it. You will choose the best answer, A, B, C, or D, to each question. Then, on Answer Sheet, find the
number of the question and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen.
Passage One
A desktop computer is a personal computer that is designed to fit easily on top of a typical office desk. A
desktop computer often comes in several units that are connected together during installation: the processor,
the display monitor, and the input devices—usually a keyboard and a mouse. At home, most desktop
computer users also purchase a printer. In businesses and more and more at home, desktop computers can
be interconnected and can share resources such as printers by being connected to a Local Area Network
(LAN).
A portable computer is a personal computer that is designed to be easily transported. The earliest PCs
designed for easy transport were called portables. As the size and weight of most portables decreased, they
became known as laptop computers and later as notebook computers. Today, larger transportable computers
continue to be called portable computers. Most of these are special-purpose computers—for example, those
for use in industrial environments where they need to be moved about frequently.
A notebook computer is a battery-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase. It can easily
be transported and used in limited spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries, small offices, and at meetings. A
notebook computer, sometimes called a laptop computer, typically weighs less than 5 pounds and is 3 inches
or less in thickness. Among the best-known makers of notebook and laptop computers are IBM, Apple,
Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, and Hewlett-Packard.
56. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.
A desktop computer is designed to be placed on the desk.
B.
People can take a portable computer wherever they go.
C. A notebook computer is a kind of portable computer.
D. Desktop computers cannot be connected with LAN.
57. Which of the following units of computers is mentioned in the passage?
A.
case
B. processor
C.input pen
D.
memory
58. Which of the following companies does NOT make notebook computers?
A.
Microsoft
B.Toshiba
C. Dell
D. Apple
59. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.
Laptop computers are completely different from notebook computers.
B.
Desktop computers can easily be turned into notebook computers.
C. LAN can be comprised of desktop computers.
D. LAN can only be comprised of notebook computers or laptop computers.
60. What can you infer from the passage?
A.
Notebook computers only use a battery as power supply.
B.
Nowadays, some portable computers are much larger than notebook computers.
C. Only desktop computers in business corporations can be connected and share resources.
D. Notebook computers, as well as desktop computers, can be used in libraries, small offices, and at
meetings.
Passage Two
The Local Area Network, or LAN, is a computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most LANs are
confined to a single building or group of buildings.
However, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves. A
system of LANs connected in this way is called a Wide Area Network, or WAN.
Most LANs connect workstations and personal computers. Each node (individual computer) in a LAN has its
own CPU with which it executes programs, but it is also able to access data and devices anywhere on the LAN.
This means that many users can share expensive devices, such as laser printers, as well as different kinds of
data. Users can also use the LAN to communicate with each other, by sending e-mail or engaging in chat
sessions.
There are many different types of LANs. Ethernets are the most common for PCs. Most Apple Macintosh
networks are based on Apple's AppleTalk network system, which is built into Macintosh computers.
The following characteristics differentiate one LAN from another:
1)Topology: The geometric arrangement of devices on the network. For example, devices can be arranged in
a ring or in a straight line.
2)Protocols: The rules and encoding specifications for sending data. The protocols also determine whether
the network uses a peer-to-peer or client/server architecture.
3)Media: Devices can be connected by twisted-pair wire, coaxial cables, or fiber optic cables. Some
networks do without connecting media altogether, communicating instead via radio waves.
LANs are capable of transmitting data at very fast rates, much faster than data can be transmitted over a
telephone line; but the distances are limited, and there is also a limit on the number of computers that can be
attached to a single LAN.
61. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about LANs?
A.
Ethernet is one of the types for LAN
B.
All kinds of LANs include only personal computers
C. There can be many sorts of devices in a LAN
D. One purpose of LAN is to share devices and data
62. What can NOT be done with LANs?
A.
One can download everything he wants from LANs
B.
One user can use another user's printer in the LAN
C. One computer can access data on another computer in the same LAN
D. Users can chat with each other in chat sessions
63. Which of the following is TRUE about the characteristics of LANs?
A.
There are only two kinds of topologies of LANs
B.
Protocols are used to connect computers in a LAN
C. LANs are connected by either twisted-pair wire, or coaxial/fiber optic cables
D. Whether the network uses a peer-to-peer or client/server architecture depends on the topology
64. We can infer from the passage that ________
A.
protocols play an important role in building LANs.
B.
there may be unlimited number of computers connected in one LAN in the future.
C. LANs transmit data faster than WANs.
D. Telephone lines will be replaced by LANs one day
65. What can we learn about LAN from this passage?
A.
It covers a very large area
B.
LANs usually don't connect with each other
C. LANs are built with only physical media
D. A WAN consists of LANs
