W ater so ftener
In order to achieve good cleaning
results, the dishwasher needs to
operate with soft water. H ard water
results in the build-up of calcium
deposits on crockery and in the
dishwasher.
Mains water with a hardness level

dishwasher, such as "3 in 1" or
"4 in 1" products, y ou should still
add salt in order to achieve optimum
results and to ensure that the water

between 1/3 and 1/4 of the normal
amount.
Important: B efore filling the salt
reservoir with dishwasher salt for the
fir st tim e, y ou must fill it with
approx . 1 litre of water to enable the
salt to dissolve. O nce the
dishwasher has been used, there is
alway s sufficient water in the
reservoir.
18
If the water in y our area is very soft

A c tiv e ing r ed ients
Modern detergents contain various
active ingredients, the most important
of which are:
– P hosphates to prevent calcification.
– A lkalis to aid removal of dried on
soiling.
– E nz y mes to break down starch and
loosen protein.
– O x y gen based bleaching agents to
remove coloured stains (e.g. tea,
coffee, tomato sauce).
Most dishwasher detergents contain
phosphates and are mildly alkaline with
enz y mes and ox y gen based bleaching
agents. P hosphate free products are
rare.
Ty pes of detergent:
– P owder and liq uid gel detergents.
These detergents allow y ou to adjust
the amount dispensed according to
the siz e of load and level of soiling.
– Tab detergents. These are suitable
for most levels of soiling.
Miele branded dishwasher powder
and tabs are available from the Miele
S pare P arts D epartment or via the
Internet, depending on country .
32
A variety of combination products is also
available (see section "A dditional

In addition to detergent, combi tabs
contain rinse aid and salt substitutes.
C ombi tabs are available as "3 in 1" or,
when they also contain other components
such as glass and stainless steel
protective additives and enhanced
cleaning power, as "4 in 1", "5 in 1" etc.
R efer to the manufacturer's packaging as
to whether the combi tabs are suitable for
the water hardness level in y our area.

combination dishwasher detergents.
These products contain a combination
of detergent and rinse aid or detergent

C leaning th e w ater inlet filter
A filter is incorporated in the screw
connection of the valve on the water
inlet hose. The filter must be cleaned
when dirty , otherwise insufficient water
flows into the wash cabinet.
,The plastic housing of the water
connection contains an electrical
component. It must not be dipped in
water.
R ec o m m end atio n
If the mains water contains a large
amount of insoluble substances, we
recommend fitting a large-area filter in
the connection between the tap and the
water inlet hose threaded union. This
filter is available from the Miele S pares
P arts D epartment.
C leaning th e filter :
^ D isconnect the dishwasher from the
mains supply . S witch off at the mains
socket and withdraw the plug.
^ C lose the tap.
^ U nscrew the inlet hose.
58
^ C arefully remove the seal.
^ W ithdraw the filter using pointed
pliers and rinse clean under running
water.
^ R eplace the filter and seal, making
sure they are sitting correctly .
^ R econnect the inlet hose to the tap,
making sure it goes on correctly and
is not cross-threaded.
^ Turn on the tap gradually to test for
leaks. If there is a leak, the inlet hose
might not be on securely , or it may
have been screwed on at an angle.
U nscrew and reconnect the water
inlet valve correctly .

C leaning th e d r ain p u m p and
no n-r etu r n v alv e
If the water has not been pumped away
at the end of a programme the drain
pump or the non-return valve might be
blocked. They are, however, easy to
clean.
^ D isconnect the dishwasher from the
mains supply . S witch off at the mains
socket and withdraw the plug.
^ Take the filter combination out of the
wash cabinet (see "C leaning and
care - C leaning the filters in the wash
cabinet").
^ S coop the water out of the cabinet
using a suitable container or utensil.
The drain pump is situated under the
non-return valve (see arrow).
^ R emove all foreign objects from the
drain pump (watch out for glass or
bone splinters which are particularly
difficult to detect and could cause
injury ). Turn the drain pump impeller
by hand to check that there are no
more obstructions. Y ou will feel a little
resistance when y ou turn the
impeller.
^ C arefully replace the non-return valve
and secure it with the catch.
,E nsure that the catch engages
correctly .
^ P ress the catch for the non-return
valve inwards a.
^ L ift out the non-return valve b, and
rinse well under running water.
^ R emove all foreign objects from the
non-return valve.

E lec tr ic al c o nnec tio n
,P lease follow the installation
instructions carefully .
A ll electrical work should be carried
out only by a suitably q ualified and
competent person, in strict
accordance with national and local
safety regulations.
E nsure power is not supplied to the
appliance while installation work is
being carried out.
This dishwasher is supplied with a
mains cable and moulded plug ready
for connection to an a.c. single phase
supply , (230 -240 V 50 H z for NZ and
A ustralia) via a fused plug and suitable
switched socket which is easily
accessible after installation.
^ The voltage, rated load and fuse
rating are given on the data plate
located above the door. P lease
ensure that these match the
household mains supply .
F or ex tra safety it is advisable to install
a residual current device (R C D ), with a
trip current of 30 mA .
^ D o not connect via an ex tension lead.
,If the connection cable is
damaged it must be replaced with a
complete connection box and cable
by a Miele approved service
technician only .
The wires in the mains lead are
coloured in accordance with the
following code:
G reen/y ellow = earth
B lue
= neutral
B rown
= live
If the colours of the wires in the mains
lead of this appliance do not
correspond with the coloured markings
identify ing the terminals of y our plug,
proceed as follows:
^ The wire which is coloured green and
y ellow must be connected to the
terminal in the plug which is marked
with the letter E or by the earth
sy mbol z or coloured green, or
green and y ellow.
^ The wire which is coloured blue must
be connected to the terminal in the
plug which is marked with the letter N

T h e M iele w ater p r o o f anti-leak
sy stem
P roviding y our dishwasher has been
installed correctly , the Miele waterproof
anti-leak sy stem will protect y ou from
water damage throughout its lifetime.
C o nnec tio n to th e w ater su p p ly
,W ater in the dishwasher must
not be used as drinking water.
– The water pressure (flow pressure at
the take-off point) must be between
30 and 1000 kP a (0.3 and 10 bar).
If the water pressure is too high, a
pressure reducer valve must be
fitted.
,To avoid any
damage to the
appliance, the dishwasher must only
be connected to a fully vented
plumbing sy stem.
– The dishwasher may be connected
to a cold or hot water supply , max .
60 ° C . W e would only recommend
connection to a hot water supply if it
is economical, e.g. a solar powered
supply . W hen connected to a hot
water supply all programme stages
which would otherwise be carried out
with cold water will be carried out
with hot water.
,A hot water connection with
temperatures ex ceeding 60 ° C may
cause damage to the unit, impair
wash results and affect the product
guarantee.
– The inlet hose is approx . 1.5 m long. A
1.5 metre long flex ible metal ex tension
hose, pressure tested to 14,000 kP a/
140 bar, is available as an optional
accessory if req uired.
– A tap with a 3/4" male thread must be
provided on site.
– The dishwasher is constructed to
comply with A ustralian regulations,
and may be connected to a suitable
supply without an ex tra non-return
valve if national regulations allow this.
72
! The inlet hose must no t be
shortened or damaged in any way
as it contains electrical components
(see illustration).
This appliance incorporates backflow protection comply ing with
A S /NZ S 3500.1.2. No further
backflow protection req uired for
connection to the water supply .
P lu m b ing
D r ainag e
V enting th e d r ainag e sy stem
– The appliance drainage sy stem is
fitted with a non-return valve, which
prevents dirty water from flowing
back into the dishwasher via the
drain hose.
If the on-site drain connection is
situated lower than the guide path for
the bottom basket rollers in the open
door, the drainage sy stem must be
vented. O therwise a siphoning effect
during a programme can cause the
appliance to empty itself of water.
– The dishwasher is supplied with
approx . 1.5 m of flex ible drain hose
with an internal diameter of 22 mm.
– The drain hose can be ex tended
using a connection piece to attach a
further length of hose.
The drainage length must not be
longer than 4 m, and the delivery
head must not ex ceed 1 m.
To vent it:
^ O pen the dishwasher door fully .
– If the hose is to be directly fitted to
the drainage outlet on site, use the
hose clip supplied (see installation
diagram).
– The hose can be directed to the left
or the right of the appliance.
– The on-site connector for the drain
hose can be adapted to different
widths of hose. If the connector
protrudes too far into the drain hose,
it will need to be shortened.
O therwise the drain hose may
become blocked.
^ P ull the lower spray arm firmly
upwards to remove it.
^ C ut off the top of the vent valve in the
wash cabinet.
– The drain hose must not be
shortened.
,Make sure that there are no
kinks in the hose, and that it is not
sq uashed or stretched.
