New technology has enabled long range CCD scanners which can read up to 410mm away (subject to barcode width) and can be used with a stand for hands-free scanning. They scan by taking an image of the barcode and then decoding it. With no mirrors, prisms or other moving parts they are very durable . Laser scanners are line scanners that have a mirror which moves light back and forth to decode, they read from 25-250 mm away (subject to barcode width). Being able to read from a distance the scanner can be placed in a stand providing a hands-free option for fast scanning.
