Safety Operating and working on electric vehicles can be hazardous and is recommended only for individuals who have the appropriate training and safety equipment. The vehicle manufacture’s manual should be consulted before any work is attempted. Always wear safety glasses and use properly insulated tools to avoid shorts when working on electric vehicles. Common hazards include electric shock, vehicle run-away, and risk of fire or explosion from hydrogen gas. Electric Shock – Battery packs in electric vehicles can generate high-power arcs if they are short circuited. Always disconnect the battery when working on other parts of the motor control circuit. Vehicle Run-Away – Under certain conditions an electric vehicle may run out of control. Before work begins on the vehicle, disconnect the motor (if not needed) and/or using a properly rated jack, raise the drive wheels off the ground to prevent vehicle run-away. Fire/Explosion – Lead acid batteries emit hydrogen gas during charging and discharging and can build-up around the batteries. Please refer to the battery manufacturers safety guidelines.
