The most common source of kick-back is that small, hidden limb that catches the upper
quadrant of the bar nose. Opinion’s divided on another source that’s becoming increasingly
common with the mass sales of small, short-bar saws; that’s sawing and felling logs of
diameter greater than the length. Saw makers like to say that a 14” bar will fell a 24” tree. It
will, of course, if you don’t mind cutting in from each side with the saw bar buried in the
trunk. I think it’s better practice to work with a bar longer than the diameter of the tree –
even if you have to rent a saw for such special jobs.
