What is an SGD? “Speech Generating Device” (or “SGD”) is a term used by Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurers. An SGD is a dedicated
communication device designed specifically to run communication software only. As a result, a notebook or PDA that is an SGD is excellent
for communication, but does not give you access to all the extra things that a notebook or PDA would normally do, such as running educational software, work-related applications and games, surfing the web, sending and receiving email, etc.

needs to be sent in for service, we will

describing the problem. Include a daytime phone number and the street
address where the item is to be returned
after the repair is complete.
5. Ship by UPS and insure the package for
the amount you paid for the item(s), or
call us for an insurance valuation. If the
item is under warranty, it will be returned
free of charge by UPS Ground; if you wish
to have the item returned using faster
delivery, you must pay the difference. If
the item is not under warranty, it will be
returned C.O.D., unless prepayment has

Communication Modes
Communication systems provide various
forms of output. The most common are
speech and printed output. Other modes
can be equally important to some users,
such as drawing and music, environmental control, and playing games. If the user
is a student or is employed, the device
should allow for the use of standard software for word processing, accounting, or
other purposes as needed for school or
work . Be sure the system you select is
capable of providing all forms of output
the user will require during the life
of the system.
Communication Speed
Communication with a device is much
slower than with natural speech. Be sure
the communication system you select
allows the user to communicate at a
comfortable speed.
Easy to Learn, Easy to Use
Growth Potential
Usually, a communication aid is funded
for a period of at least five years. Many of
our systems have been used even longer.
You must consider what you need now
and what your requirements will be over
the life of the system. Be sure to
consider expected changes in the
user's physical, cognitive, and language
skills. Environmental factors, such as
mobility, surroundings, and care attendants, also may change. Consider purchasing a computer-based AAC system,

Reliability, Durability
Communication systems, especially
wheelchair-mounted systems, receive a
fair amount of jostling and vibration during normal operation. Be sure the system
you select is capable of withstanding the

The system you select should provide

several good reasons: communication
power, ease of use, flexibility, reliability,
and cost.

The greater memory, speed, and display
size offered by personal computers make
them more powerful communication
systems compared to dedicated devices.
With these additional resources, we
can implement very powerful strategies
that are easy to use and provide more
efficient communication.
Flexibility
The typical AAC user’s needs change over
time. Our products are designed to be
customized to your needs, and you can
change various settings as your needs
change. If you need to transition from one
of our software products to another, you
can often use the same hardware with
minimal additional investment. Also, if
you ever need to replace your hardware,
you can often transfer your Words+ software to new hardware with minimal new
investment. In addition, you receive free
updates for life (a shipping and handling
fee may apply) of the Words+ software
products that you purchase.
Which Computer is Best?
There are many computers now available
that will run Words+ software. Most users
today need a battery-powered portable
(notebook or subnotebook) computer
with a hard disk and a backlit screen.
Our computer systems are a natural
choice for use in the AAC environment.
They come fully loaded with our E Z Keys
or Say-it! SAM communication software
and are designed to withstand the rigors
of the typical AAC environment. If you
choose to purchase your computer
from another source, please call us for
recommendations and be sure to read
the following paragraphs.

another source and it is one of the
computers for which we have developed
standard setup procedures, we will
provide configuration support by phone,
fax, or letter for the software and hardware you purchased from us. You may
send the computer to us, and we will
configure the machine, install the software
you purchased from us, test it, and return
it to you. There will be a charge of
$150.00 (plus shipping) for this service.
2. If you purchase a computer that is not
one with which we are familiar, but you
are buying software from us, you can send
the computer and its manual to us. We will
configure the system for the Words+ software, install the software, test the complete system, and ship it back to you.
There is a $300.00 minimum charge (plus
shipping) for this service.
3. If you require assistance installing our
software on your computer that you
purchased from another source, you may
send the computer to us and we will install
the software, make any changes needed to
the configuration, test it, and send it back to
you. The charge for this service is $75.00 per
hour (plus shipping), regardless of whether
the software is compatible with our software. If the software is incompatible, we
must still charge for our time.
4. For computers that you purchase and
configure yourself, we will provide telephone support for hardware and software items that you purchase from
Words+; however, if it is determined that
the problem you are having is not with a
Words+ product but with other hardware
or software, we will refer you to the
appropriate vendor for support.

Today's communication systems employ a
variety of strategies in an effort to provide
greater communication speed. Some of
these strategies include memorizing
coded symbol sequences that represent
words and phrases, using abbreviations
to represent words and phrases, and
selecting words and phrases that the
system “predicts” you will write or say
next. Be sure the system you choose is
easy to learn and easy to use.

Warranties on Words+ Software
and Hardware
All Words+ software programs (exclusive
of Abbreviate!) come with a lifetime warranty and include free software upgrades
for life (a shipping and handling fee may
apply). All Words+ manufactured products and all batteries are warranted to be
free from manufacturing defects for a full
year from the date of purchase. This warranty includes all parts and labor required
to restore defective products to serviceable condition. The Freedom
computer-based communication systems
come with a three-year warranty on parts
and labor. Items that have been damaged
by accident, abuse, or misuse are not
covered under the warranty. For terms

Payment Policy
For private parties, advance payment or
C.O.D. in the form of cash or a cashier’s
check, credit card or personal check is

System Requirements
If you are ordering hardware or software
products for use with a computer from
someone other than Words+, be ready to
provide the following information: the
manufacturer of your computer, the type
of processor and its speed in megahertz,
the amount of RAM, the amount of
available hard disk space, and the type
and version of operating system.
Software
When you order Words+ software, you
will receive a “SoftKey” (a hardware
adapter that plugs into your USB or
parallel port). Each SoftKey has a SoftKey
Code, which tells your computer which
Words+ software you have purchased.
Your SoftKey will authorize one or more
programs, such as E Z Keys or Say-it! SAM
to run on your hardware. If you request
multiple software packages that use the
same SoftKey, and pay the regular price
for the first software program, you will
often get a substantial discount on additional software packages. See the catalog
or call our Sales Dept. for more information.
Input Device
If the intended user will not be using a
standard keyboard, you will need an
alternative input device. If the input
device (such as a mouse, trackball, joystick, headpointer, etc.) requires a USB
port, serial port, or other specific port,
be sure the computer has enough of the
required types of ports for the input
device and any other devices that you
want to have connected at the same time
(such as environmental control units).
