Media Center Collaborative Space initiative
Overview
Recent APR evaluations of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (FLL) at the
University of Delaware have suggested that the office space currently allocated to FLL in JastakBurgess Hall does not adequately provide a convivial environment for students enrolled in
foreign language related programs and that this may influence their engagement in FLL courses,
their ability and willingness to seek faculty assistance and guidance in academic matters, and
the general feeling that they belong to a department that cares about their long-term success
as FLL majors. Add to this the increasing pedagogical value of discovery learning and the
collaborative learning methodologies associated with it and it becomes clear that the creation
of collaborative spaces in which students may engage in target language discussion as well as
course related project development has considerable potential for improving student learning
outcomes in foreign language courses.
It has been suggested by members of the FLL pedagogy faculty and others that modifications to
the Foreign Language Media Center in which some space is allocated to the creation of a
convivial collaborative area compatible with the goals of discovery learning through student
collaboration, would be a viable first step in improving the conviviality of Jastak-Burgess Hall.
However, as the need for computer-based on-line testing grows to prominence particularly in
its application to foreign language oral proficiency assessment, there is the additional need to
preserve some of the Foreign Language Media Center’s current configuration, especially given
the availability of other spaces in Jastak-Burgess Hall to which the collaborative space model
may be applied, naturally providing a more distributed and probably more effective approach
to improving FLL conviviality.
Proposal
Since creating collaborative space involves a more open arrangement of collaborative resources,
the proposal to modify the Foreign Language Media Center involves the removal of one of the
Media Center’s four computer clusters which are designed to insulate users from one another
as they engage in individualized academic activity. To enhance the accessibility of the
collaborative space, the computer cluster closest to the entrance of the Media Center has been
selected for removal involving the disassembly of all in-cluster wiring including both electrical
and Ethernet connections in addition to the removal of the cluster structure itself. All support
tables currently located in the collaborative space area would be relocated to other parts of the
Media Center creating a substantially large open space at the entrance to the facility that is
approximately 24.3 feet wide and 19 feet long. Given that collaboration can be technological,
social, or linguistic in nature, non-exclusive provision for all three of these types of interaction
has been made by creating two computer-based collaborative conference tables equipped with
shareable flat-panel displays responsive to student laptops through a student controlled
switching system, a round table with four chairs for linguistic interaction and a sofa coupled
with a coffee table and two easy chairs for social interactions. Electricity is supplied to each of
the two conference tables via surge protected power strips accessible to users from the table
tops, and cables connecting user laptops to the shared display at each table emerge from
cutouts located at the center of each table. Chairs needed to populate the conference table
seating positions are drawn from seating used in the computer cluster designated for removal
with an additional one being drawn from tables relocated by the plan. The chairs found at the
round table are equipped with wheels for easy movement around the table and the pedestal on
which the table is located is weighted to provide it with increased stability. The sofa and two
easy chairs proposed for the social arrangement have been selected for their stability, durability,
and compatibility with one another and current modern furniture design. A scale drawing of
the proposed furniture acquisitions and their arrangement in the Media Center space allocated
to the project is included below along with an itemized list of the items, their costs and the
total cost of the proposal in its current form.
Conclusion
The proposed Collaborative Space plan minimizes cost by utilizing materials already in use at
the Media Center coupled with purchases of minimal economic impact on FLL funding
resources. The design of the space accommodates a variety of collaborative perspectives by
providing materials that promote technological, social and linguistic interactions in a spacious
and convivial environment. Finally, the proposal provides convivial collaborative space with
minimal impact on other Media Center activities and facilities.

Ferrite Cores are small magnetic blocks wrapped around the end of a cable. They are used to suppress EMI/RFI electronic noise on the cable by absorbing the unwanted
high frequencies and dissipating them as very low-level heat. This is the simplest and cheapest form of electronic noise reduction and is most effective on small gauge
cabling, which is inherently more susceptible to electronic noise interference than thicker cables.

The HDMI® specification will add a data channel to the HDMI® cable and will enable highspeed bi-directional communication. Connected devices that include this feature will be able to
send and receive data via 100 Mb/sec Ethernet, making them instantly ready for any IP-based
application.
The HDMI® Ethernet Channel will allow an Internet-enabled HDMI® device to share its Internet
connection with other HDMI® devices without the need for a separate Ethernet cable. The new
feature will also provide the connection platform to allow HDMI®-enabled devices to share
content between devices. Put simply, this could allow a ""broadband-connected television using
its HEC-enabled HDMI® port to provide internet connection sharing with another HEC-enabled
device such as a game console or DVR.

3D Over HDMI®
Product Information:
The new specification will add an Audio Return Channel that will reduce the number of cables
required to deliver audio upstream for processing and playback. In cases where HDTVs are
directly receiving audio and video content, this new Audio Return Channel allows the HDTV to
send the audio stream to the A/V receiver over the HDMI® cable, eliminating the need for an
extra cable.
The 3D Over HDMI® version of the specification will define common 3D formats and
resolutions for HDMI®-enabled devices. The specification will standardize the input/output
portion of the home 3D system and will specify up to dual-stream 1080p resolution.

VGA to HDMI® Converter
This converter is used to convert the VGA output signal of a PC or a laptop to an HDMI® output signal compatible with most high definition televisions or computer
monitors with HDMI® inputs. The converter will also support audio through a 3.5mm (headphone jack size) input which connects to the 3.5mm output of the PC or laptop
with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm male to male cable. The audio is then coupled with the VGA video signal, audio and video are both converted to HDMI® format, and output over a
single HDMI® cable to the television or monitor.

- Converts a VGA video and left/right analog (3.5mm stereo) audio signal to a digital HDMI® signal.
- Inputs: 1 x VGA, 1 x 3.5mm analog stereo.
- Outputs: 1 x HDMI®
- Output resolution up to 1080p (1920x1080 @ 60Hz).
- Maximum transmission rate: 5Gbps
- Maximum transmission distance: 15m (45ft) using 24AWG or thicker HDMI® cable
