ATTENTION: GENERAL MANAGER CLAIMS PERSONNEL ❏ ❏ PARTS MANAGER SERVICE MANAGER ❏ ❏ IMPORTANT - All Service Personnel Should Read and Initial SERVICE BULLETIN APPLICABILITY: 2005MY~06MY Legacy/Outback equipped with H4 and H6 2006MY B9 Tribeca NUMBER: 11-81-06 DATE: 11/16/06 SUBJECT: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) P0600, B0221 and/or B0223 (Codes for communication error) introduction This service bulletin explains how to diagnose P0600, B0221, and/or B0223 effectively, avoiding unnecessary diagnostics. When the communication system of the vehicle becomes unstable, multiple trouble codes and multiple problem phenomena may occur. repair Procedure Information There are 6 patterns for the combination of trouble codes and problem phenomena listed in the following chart (located on page 2 of this bulletin). For example, Pattern 1 on the chart is showing you that DTC B0221, B0223, and P0600 exist and problem phenomena are Check Engine Light ON, VDC light ON, Coolant Temperature Meter indicates maximum, Odometer indicates ”Er Hc”, Cruise Control is cancelled and Cruise Control Lamp blinks. Pattern 5 is showing you that DTC B0221 exists and problem phenomena are, Coolant Temperature Meter indicates maximum and the Odometer indicates “Er Hc”. Continued on Next Page CAUTION: VEHICLE SERVICING PERFORMED BY UNTRAINED PERSONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY TO THOSE PERSONS OR TO OTHERS. Subaru Service Bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians ONLY. They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur in some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper servicing of the vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do the job correctly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that this Service Bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. In that case, the system goes to fail safe mode and driver may feel less engine power or vibration. (*2) In the case of a VDC related communication malfunction: VDC OFF indicator/VDC warning light turns ON due to fail safe mode. (*3) In the case of an engine communication malfunction: Coolant Temperature Meter indicates maximum due to fail safe mode. Technical Explanation The Body Integrated Control Unit (BIU) monitors whole communication lines and it detects communication errors/troubles. When it detects problems, the system goes to fail safe mode and displays Check Engine Light ON, VDC light ON, Coolant Temperature Meter indicates maximum, Odometer indicates ”Er Hc”, Cruise Control is cancelled and Cruise Control Lamp blinks to avoid the problem from becoming more severe. B0221, B0223, P0600 are resultant codes. To avoid a severe system abnormality, the BIU monitors communication instability in a very short time period. The communication system may become unstable under the following circumstances: • • • • • • Near powerful radio equipment, such as truck radios Poor contact on connectors Noises emitted by non-genuine accessories or modified electrical circuits Unstable battery voltage due to non-genuine accessories or modified electrical circuits Starting the engine when battery is weak Repeating ignition switch ON and OFF quickly or repeating engine starting and stopping In these cases, communication stability can be restored by the self-recovery function, but the malfunction display and fail-safe mode continue to alert the driver until the ignition switch is Continued on Next Page Page Bulletin Number: 11-81-06; Date: 11/16/06 turned off. Troubleshooting Flow Chart Check for DTC(s) and vehicle condition. 1. Do DTC B0221, B0223, and/or P0600 exist? YES 2. Do DTC B0223 and P1718 exist? YES ABS/VDC malfunction is possible. Check DTC(s) in ABS/VDC control unit and proceed with diagnosis (refer to the applicable service manual). NO 3. Do any engine related codes exist together with B0221? YES Refer to applicable service manual for engine related code(s) and proceed with troubleshooting. If code P0600, refer to LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS) Basic Diagnostic Procedure. NO If other than P0600, return to step 3 after the engine code diagnosis. 4. Is there any abnormality on power source to ECU, TCU, BIU, ABS/VDC Unit, and combination meter? NO YES Refer to the applicable service manual for power source circuit failure and proceed with troubleshooting. ECU: ENGINE (DIAGNOSTICS) Diagnostics for Engine Starting Failure Inspection of ECM power supply TCU: AUTO TRANSMISSION (DIAGNOSTICS) Diagnostics procedure for Subaru Select Monitor Communication COMMUNICATION FOR INITIALIZING IMPOSSIBLE BIU: Refer to B0103 ABS/VDC: Refer to C0109/C0042 Combination meter: Instrumentation/Driver Info Combination Meter System Check power supply and ground circuit Continued on Next Page Bulletin Number: 11-81-06; Date: 11/16/06 Page 5. Does any trouble code stay if ignition switch is turned off and on? (No need to start the engine.) YES Refer to applicable service manual for the remaining trouble code(s) and proceed with troubleshooting. YES Refer to applicable service manual for the affected sensor trouble and proceed with troubleshooting. NO 6. Monitor the BIU data by Subaru Select Monitor. Are the signals for fuel remaining, outside temperature, lighting position, coolant temperature, or gear position abnormal? NO This is a temporary unstable communication phenomenon. Clear the memory to delete the code(s). If any of the steps 2 through 6 direct you to “Yes”, and you are able to repair the problem, this is not a temporary unstable communication phenomenon.
