Before you begin
Before using this product to test your blood glucose, carefully read this User Guide and the inserts that come with the OneTouch® Verio™
Test Strips and OneTouch® Verio™ Control Solution.
Test principle
Glucose in the blood sample mixes with special chemicals in the test strip and a small electric current is produced. The strength of this
current changes with the amount of glucose in the blood sample. Your meter measures the current, calculates your blood glucose level,
displays the result, and stores it in its memory.
Intended use
The OneTouch® Verio™Blood Glucose Monitoring System is intended to be used for the quantitative measurement of glucose (sugar)
in fresh capillary whole blood. The OneTouch® Verio™ System is intended for self-testing outside the body (in vitro diagnostic use) by
people with diabetes at home and by health care professionals in a clinical setting as an aid to monitor the effectiveness of diabetes
control.
The OneTouch® Verio™ Blood Glucose Monitoring System should not be used for:
• The diagnosis of diabetes.
• Testing newborns.
• Patients within 24 hours of receiving a D-xylose absorption test as it may cause inaccurately high results.

2 Testing your blood glucose
Testing with a fingertip sample
Preparing for a test
Have these things ready when you test:
OneTouch® Verio™ Meter
OneTouch® Verio™ Test Strips
Lancing device
Sterile lancets
• Use only OneTouch® Verio™ Test Strips.
• When you first open a vial of test strips, record the discard date on the label. Refer to the test strip insert or vial label for instructions on
determining the discard date.
• Unlike some blood glucose meters, no separate step to code your OneTouch® Verio™ System is required.
• Make sure your meter and test strips are about the same temperature before you test.
• Do Not open the test strip vial until you are ready to test. Use the test strip immediately after removing it from the vial.
• Do Not test if there is condensation (water build-up) on your meter. Move your meter and test strips to a cool, dry spot and wait for the
meter surface to dry before testing.
• After removing a test strip from the vial, immediately close the lid tightly to avoid contamination and damage.
• Store unused test strips only in their original vial.
• After performing a test, Do Not put the used test strip back in the vial.
• Do Not re-use a test strip that had blood or control solution applied to it. Otherwise, you may get an inaccurate low result. Test strips are
for single use only.
• With clean, dry hands, you may touch the test strip anywhere on its surface. Do Not bend, cut or modify the test strips in any way.
m CAUTION:
• Do Not use your test strips if your vial is damaged or left open to air. This could lead to error messages or inaccurate results. If you
find that the vial is uncapped or damaged in any way before you begin using a new vial of test strips, contact Customer Service at
1800-LifeScan immediately. Customer Service is available from 8:00AM to 6:00PM, Monday - Friday.
• This meter meets all applicable standards, but some cell phones may interfere with the proper operation of your meter if next to
the meter during testing.
• If you cannot test due to a problem with your testing supplies, contact your health care professional. Failure to test could delay
treatment decisions and lead to a serious medical condition.
• The test strip vial contains drying agents that are harmful if inhaled or swallowed and may cause skin or eye irritation.
• Do Not use test strips after the expiration date (printed on the vial) or the discard date, whichever comes first, or your results may
be inaccurate.

(Example)
Interpreting unexpected test results
Refer to the following cautions whenever your test results are higher or lower than what you expect.
m CAUTION:
Low glucose results
If your test result is below 3.8 mmol/L or is shown as LOW GLUCOSE, it may mean hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose). This may
require immediate treatment according to your health care professional’s recommendations. Although this result could be due to a
test error, it is safer to treat first, then do another test.
Dehydration and low glucose results
You may get false low glucose results if you are severely dehydrated. If you think you are severely dehydrated, contact your health
care professional immediately.
High glucose results
If your test result is above 10.0 mmol/L, it may mean hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose) and you should consider re-testing.
Talk to your health care professional if you are concerned about hyperglycaemia.
HIGH GLUCOSE is displayed when your blood glucose level is over 33.3 mmol/L. You may have severe hyperglycaemia (very high
blood glucose). Re-test your blood glucose. If the result is HIGH GLUCOSE again, this indicates a severe problem with your blood
glucose control. Obtain and follow instructions from your health care professional immediately.
Repeated unexpected glucose results
If you continue to get unexpected results, check your system with control solution. See Section 5, Control solution testing.
If you are experiencing symptoms that are not consistent with your blood glucose results and you have followed all instructions in
this User Guide, call your health care professional. Never ignore symptoms or make significant changes to your diabetes management
program without speaking to your health care professional.
Unusual red blood cell count
A haematocrit (percentage of your blood that is red blood cells) that is either very high (above 60%) or very low (below 20%) can
cause false results.
Testing with a forearm or palm sample
The OneTouch® Verio™ System lets you test with a blood sample from your fingertip, forearm or palm. At times, results obtained at the
forearm or palm may be different from a fingertip measurement. Talk to your health care professional before you begin using your forearm
or palm for sampling.
If you are testing:
Use blood sample from your:
Routinely before meals
Prior to or more than two hours after:
• a meal
• a rapid-acting insulin injection or insulin pump bolus
• exercise
Fingertip, forearm, or palm
When your blood glucose is changing rapidly, such as:
• within two hours after a meal
•w
ithin two hours after a rapid-acting insulin injection or insulin
pump bolus, or
• d uring or within two hours after exercise
Fingertip
When you are concerned about the possibility of hypoglycaemia
(low blood sugar)
When the forearm or palm results do not agree with the way
you feel, during illness or during times of stress
TESTING YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE
9
m CAUTION:
Do Not test on your forearm or palm when:
• You think your blood glucose is rapidly falling, such as within two hours of exercise or a rapid-acting insulin injection or pump bolus.
Testing with a fingertip sample may identify hypoglycaemia or an insulin reaction sooner than testing with a forearm or palm sample.
• It has been less than two hours after a meal, a rapid-acting insulin injection or pump bolus, physical exercise, or you think your blood
glucose level is changing rapidly.
• You are concerned about the possibility of hypoglycaemia or an insulin reaction, such as when driving a car. This is especially
important if you suffer from hypoglycaemia unawareness (lack of symptoms to indicate an insulin reaction).
• Remember: Consult your health care professional before using your forearm or palm for testing.
Choose a different puncture site each time you test. Repeated punctures in the same spot may cause soreness and calluses.
If bruising occurs at an alternate site or you have difficulty getting a sample, consider sampling from a fingertip instead. You may want to
review the choice of sites with your health care professional.
Getting a blood sample
Getting a blood sample from your forearm or palm is different than getting a sample from your fingertips. Follow these instructions to get a
sufficient blood drop for testing.
 Insert a lancet and snap on clear cap
Carefully insert a new, sterile lancet.
Snap on the clear cap.
2 Adjust the depth setting
You may need a deeper setting to get a sufficient sample for testing.
Twist the cap to increase the depth.
Be sure to cock the lancing device.
TESTING YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE
10
3 Choose a sample site
Before testing, wash your hands and forearm (if applicable) thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry.
Choose a fleshy spot away from bone, veins and hair. Gently massage or apply warmth to
the site to increase blood flow.
Forearm
Select a fleshy spot with no visible veins and avoid deep lines which may cause your blood
sample to smear.
Palm
4 Lance your forearm or palm
• Firmly press and hold the lancing device against the sample site.
• L ooking through the clear cap, wait until you see the sample site change colour as
blood collects under the skin. This lets you know that there is enough blood to obtain a
sufficient sample for testing.
• Press the release button while continuing to apply pressure.
Forearm or Palm
• H old the lancing device firmly against your skin until a round drop of blood forms under
the cap. You may need to wait a little longer to get a large enough drop of blood from
the forearm or palm.
• Do Not squeeze the site excessively.
Forearm or Palm
 Remove the lancing device
Carefully lift the lancing device away from your skin without smearing the sample.
If your sample runs or spreads because of hair on the forearm or a line in your palm, sample again in another area.
 Apply the sample to the test strip
Keep your forearm or palm steady and use your other
hand to bring the side of the test strip channel to the
drop of blood.

5 Control solution testing
When to test with control solution
OneTouch® Verio™ Control Solution is used to check that the meter and test strips are working together properly and that
you are performing the test correctly. (Control solution is available separately.)
• Use only OneTouch® Verio™ Control Solution. Any level can be used to check your system.
• When you first open a new vial of control solution, record the discard date on the vial label. Refer to the control solution
insert or vial label for instructions on determining the discard date.
• Make sure your meter, test strips, and control solution are at the same temperature before testing.
• Tightly close the cap on the control solution vial immediately after use to avoid contamination or damage.
m CAUTION:
• Do Not swallow or ingest control solution.
• Do Not apply control solution to the skin or eyes as it may cause irritation.
• Do Not use control solution after the expiration date (printed on the vial label) or the discard date, whichever comes
first, or your results may be inaccurate.
Do a control solution test
• Whenever you open a new vial of test strips.
• If you suspect that the meter or test strips are not
working properly.
• I f you have had repeated unexpected blood
glucose results.
• If you drop or damage the meter.
How to test with control solution
 Insert a test strip to turn the meter on
Wait for the APPLY SAMPLE screen to appear on
the display.
2 Prepare the control solution
Remove the vial cap and place it on a flat
surface with the top of the cap pointing up.
Squeeze the vial to discard the first drop.
Wipe both the tip of the control solution vial and the top of the
cap with a clean, damp tissue or cloth.
Then, squeeze a drop into the small well on the top of the cap or onto another clean,
non-absorbent surface.

Detailed information about your system
Comparing meter results to laboratory results
Results obtained from the OneTouch® Verio™ Meter and laboratory tests are reported in plasma-equivalent units. However, your meter result
may differ from your lab result due to normal variation. A result from your OneTouch® Verio™ Meter is considered accurate when it is within
±15% of the lab result.
Meter results can be affected by factors that do not affect lab results in the same way, which may cause a difference of more than ±15%.
Specific factors that may cause your meter result to vary from your lab result by more than ±15% include:
• Y ou have eaten recently. This can cause a result from fingertip testing to be up to 3.8 mmol/L higher than a lab test using blood drawn
from a vein.1
• Your haematocrit is above 60% or below 20%.
• You are severely dehydrated.
• For additional information, refer to the OneTouch® Verio™ Test Strip Insert.
Guidelines for obtaining accurate meter to lab comparisons:
Before going to the lab:
• Perform a control solution test to make sure your meter is working properly.
• Do Not eat for at least 8 hours before you test your blood.
• Take your meter and testing supplies with you to the lab.
Testing with your OneTouch® Verio™ Meter at the lab:
• Test within 15 minutes of the lab test.
• Use only a fresh, capillary blood sample from your fingertip.
• Follow all instructions in this User Guide for performing a blood glucose test.

Performance Characteristics
System Accuracy:
Diabetes experts have suggested that glucose meters should agree within 0.8 mmol/L of a laboratory method when the glucose concentration
is lower than 4.2 mmol/L, and within 20% of a laboratory method when the glucose concentration is 4.2 mmol/L or higher. However, experts
have suggested greater accuracy of Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems is desirable. The OneTouch® Verio™ Blood Glucose Monitoring System has
demonstrated accuracy within ± 0.7 mmol/L of the laboratory method for glucose concentrations lower than 4.4 mmol/L, and within ±15%
of the laboratory method for glucose concentrations 4.4 or higher. Samples from 100 patients were tested using both the OneTouch® Verio™
System and the YSI 2300 glucose analyser laboratory instrument.
