D o not use washing-up liq uid. A c tiv e ing r ed ients Modern detergents contain various active ingredients, the most important of which are: – P hosphates to prevent calcification. – A lkalis to aid removal of dried on soiling. – E nz y mes to break down starch and loosen protein. – O x y gen based bleaching agents to remove coloured stains (e.g. tea, coffee, tomato sauce). Most dishwasher detergents contain phosphates and are mildly alkaline with enz y mes and ox y gen based bleaching agents. P hosphate free products are rare. Ty pes of detergent: – P owder and liq uid gel detergents. These detergents allow y ou to adjust the amount dispensed according to the siz e of load and level of soiling. – Tab detergents. These are suitable for most levels of soiling. Miele branded dishwasher powder and tabs are available from the Miele S pare P arts D epartment or via the Internet, depending on country . 32 A variety of combination products is also available (see section "A dditional functions, C ombi-tab", depending on model). In addition to detergent, combi tabs contain rinse aid and salt substitutes. C ombi tabs are available as "3 in 1" or, when they also contain other components such as glass and stainless steel protective additives and enhanced cleaning power, as "4 in 1", "5 in 1" etc. R efer to the manufacturer's packaging as to whether the combi tabs are suitable for the water hardness level in y our area. P lease note that the cleaning and dry ing results of tab detergents can vary greatly . F or optimum cleaning and dry ing results use Miele dishwasher detergent and add Miele salt and Miele rinse aid separately . U nder certain circumstances unsatisfactory washing and dry ing results might be noticed when using combination dishwasher detergents. These products contain a combination of detergent and rinse aid or detergent and salt (2 in 1) or detergent, rinse aid and salt (3 in 1). D ry ing results might not be as good as ex pected or residues or flecks might be left on crockery . If results are still unsatisfactory , even after seeking advice from the detergent manufacturer, we suggest that y ou change to a different product or use a traditional dishwasher detergent. O p er atio n D isp ensing ^ F ollow the dosage recommended by the manufacturer on the packaging. ^ U nless directed otherwise, use one detergent tab or add 20 to 30 ml detergent in compartment II, depending on the level of soiling. W ith very heavy soiling y ou can also add a small amount of detergent to compartment l (see "P rogramme chart"). ^ D o not use tabs with the "Q uick" programme, as they will not dissolve properly . F ailure to dispense the recommended amount of detergent may impair cleaning results. ,A void inhalation of powder detergents and do not ingest dishwasher detergent. D ishwasher detergents contain irritant or corrosive ingredients which can cause burning in the nose, mouth and throat if swallowed, or inhibit breathing. C onsult a doctor immediately if detergent has been swallowed or inhaled. K eep detergent and other household agents out of the reach of children at all times. K eep children away from the dishwasher when the door is open. There could still be detergent residues in the cabinet. To avoid the danger of children coming into contact with the dishwasher detergent, only add detergent just before starting the programme and close the door, activating the child safety lock (if y our dishwasher is fitted with one). 33 O p er atio n A d d ing d eter g ent ^ Make sure that the detergent packaging is properly closed after use to avoid it getting damp and becoming lumpy . D uring the programme, the time left until the end of the programme is display ed. A t the end of a programme, the In-operation indicator light will be visible flashing slowly with the door shut. The time display ed may vary with the same programme. This is partly because of the water temperature at each intake, the reactivation cy cle and partly because of the amount of crockery and how dirty it is. W hen a programme is selected for the first time, the display shows an average time for a cold water intake. The times shown in the programme chart refer to standard test loads and temperatures. E ach time a programme is run, the electronic unit takes the new conditions into account, and calculates the time req uired. To save energy the display goes out after a few minutes, if y ou do not touch any sensors during this time. Touching any sensor will switch the display back on again (ex cept for the button V). 36 0 appears in the Time display . Y ou can now empty the dishwasher. If y ou open the door fully after switching off, the dishes will cool much faster. F irst unload the lower basket, then the upper basket and finally the cutlery tray (depending on model). This will prevent water drops from the upper basket and cutlery tray from falling onto the dishes in the lower basket. 37 O p er atio n Inter r u p ting a p r o g r am m e O peration is interrupted as soon as the door is opened.
