VPN > PPTP
PPTP is a tunneling protocol meant for tunneling IP/non-IP packets through the IP only network (the Internet). The
configuration of the VPN PPTP lets you grant single specified hosts access to your network via an encrypted tunnel. PPTP
is considerably easier to set up than IPSec because, if Microsoft Windows is being used, it does not require additional
software on the client computer as IPSec does. Also, PPTP is part of the Microsoft Windows program since Windows 95.
Notes:
• To be able to use PPTP with your RouteFinder, Windows 95 and 98 clients require a PPTP update from Microsoft
at: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q191/5/40.ASP.
• If you are using Windows or 98, you may also have to update Microsoft RAS update.
When enabling PPTP for the first time, a random network for use as a Pool will be generated. Clients will be given addresses
from this network range.
About Setting Up PPTP Users
You can define your own pool and set it to be used as the PPTP pool. Alternatively, you can assign a special IP to each
user when you define each user’s account (see Networks & Services).
• This IP does NOT need to be from the pool.
• The client does not need to specifically request this IP address to be used. It will be assigned to the client
automatically.
If an application such as online banking is not working after implementing the RouteFinder, you can see if any packets
were filtered out and which rule was responsible for filtering them.
