Switch should close when pedal is pressed for forward movement and open when pedal is returned to neutral. c. Switch should always be open when pedal is pressed for reverse movement. Q R Figure 3J 11 3 ADJUSTMENTS 3.12 MOW SPEED _____________________________________________________________ Cutting quality is better at speeds well below the transport speed of the tractor. An initial mow speed of 7.5 mph (13.7 kph) is set at the factory and should be satisfactory for most cutting conditions. Local turf conditions however may respond better to a slower speed. S To set mow speed, loosen jam nut (S) and adjust stop screw up to reduce speed, down to increase speed. Tighten nut to hold adjustment in place. Figure 3K 3.13 LIFT SPRINGS ____________________________________________________________ The lift springs can be adjusted so the exposed bolt thread (T) is zero for maximum traction or turned out to it’s maximum limits to help the reels follow uneven turf. Do not exceed these values or tractor damage may result To disconnect springs for reel removal, fully raise all mowers to transport position and install transport locks. Remove bolt (T) from each mower. Remove transport locks and lower the reels to the ground. The initial weight setting should be made with the front reels weighing 10 lb (4.5 kg) more than the center and wing reels. Individual adjustment can then be made from this point to fit specific turf conditions. ! WARNING T T To prevent injury, disconnect lift springs before removing mower. Do not raise front lift arms when the operator’s platform is opened. The platform could be forced into the closed position causing bodily injury or damage to operator’s platform. Figure 3L 3.14 LIFT SWITCH _____________________________________________________________ Position Magnets (V) so that a gap of 0.010 - 0.050 in. (0.254 - 1.25 mm) is maintained between the switch and magnet for each position. Use a Volt/Ohm meter to check if lift (U) or lower (W) switch closes when center handle is moved to corresponding position. Adjust magnets (V) as necessary. V W V U 0.01 - 0.05 0.01 - 0.05 Lower Position Lift Position Figure 3M 12 ADJUSTMENTS 3 3.15 REEL TO BEDKNIFE _______________________________________________________ (Pre-adjustment Check) 1. 2. Check the reel bearings for end play or radial play. If there is any abnormal movement of the reel, up and down or side to side, adjust or replace components as needed. Inspect the reel blades and bedknife to insure good sharp edges without bends or nicks. a. The cutting edges of the reel blades and bedknife must be sharp, free of burrs and show no signs of rounding off. b. The bedknife and bedknife backing must be securely tightened. The bedknife must be straight and sharp. c. A flat surface of 1/16 in. (2 mm) minimum must be maintained on the front face of the bedknife. Use a standard flat file to dress the bedknife. 3. If wear or damage is beyond the point where the reel or bedknife can be corrected by the lapping process, they must be reground. 4. Proper reel-to-bedknife adjustment is critical. A gap of 0.001 to 0.003” (0.025 to 0.076 mm) must be maintained across the entire length of the reel and bedknife. 5. The reel must be parallel to the bedknife. An improperly adjusted reel will lose its sharp edges prematurely and may result in serious damage to the reel and bedknife. 6. Grass conditions will also affect the adjustment. a. Dry, sparse conditions will require a wider gap to prevent heat buildup and damage to the reel and bedknife. b. High quality grass with a good moisture content requires a closer gap (near zero). 1/16 in. Figure 3N mal ation Leading Edge of Reel Figure 3O 3.16 REEL TO BEDKNIFE ADJUSTMENT___________________________________________ Read Section 3.15 before making the adjustment. ! CAUTION To prevent personal injury and damge to the cutting edges, handle the reel with extreme care. Start adjustment at the leading edge of the reel, followed by the trailing end. The leading end of the blade is the end that passes over the bedknife first during normal rotation. 1. e. When properly adjusted, the reel will spin freely and you should be able to cut a piece of newspaper, along the full length of the reel, when the paper is held at 90°. Note: Avoid Excessive tightening or damage may occur to bedknife and reel blades. Reel must turn freely. A Loosen nut (C) 1/4 turn on both ends of the cutting unit. a. Turn adjuster (A) in 1/16 to 1/8 turn increments. b. Slide a feeler gauge or shim stock.001 in. (.025 mm) between the reel blade and the bedknife. Do not turn reel. c. Adjust the trailing end of the reel in the same manner then recheck the adjustment at the leading end. d. Securely tighten all hardware and recheck the adjustment. C Figure 3P 13 3 ADJUSTMENTS 3.17 CUTTING MODES _________________________________________________________ 1. The mower may be operated in the fixed mode or the floating mode. 2. Fixed mode height of cut ranges from 3/8 - 2-15/16 in. (9.5 - 75 mm) and the mower does not require a front roller unless the terrain is rough and uneven. If a front roller is required, the roller should be raised 1/4 in. (6 mm) higher than the rear roller and used for anti-scalp purposes only. 4. To convert the mower from fixed to floating mode, remove hardware (H) from each side of the five mower frames. Install a front roller and store hardware (H) for future conversion to fixed mode. 5. To convert the mower from floating to fixed mode, assemble hardware (H) as shown and remove or raise the front roller. 3. Floating mode requires a front roller. If a 2-1/2 in. (63 mm) solid front roller is used, the cutting height will range from 3/8 to 2-1/8 in. (9 to 54 mm). If a 3 in. (76 mm) grooved front roller (Recommended) is used, the cutting height will range from 3/8 to 2-1/2 in. (9 to 63 mm).
