Fill to full line on dipstick. o To read proper levell tighten engine oil cap each time. o Reinstall engine oil cap and tighten. FiG: 9 After the first two (2) hours of mowing, change the oi!, and every 25 hours thereafter. You may need to change the oil more often under dusty, dirty conditions. MOWING TiPS GAS (See Fig. 9) Fill tuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline. Purchase fuel in quantities'that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel freshness. IMPORTANT: WHEN OPERATING iN TEMPERATURES BELOW 32°F(0°0); USE FRESH, CLEAN WINTER GRADE GASOL NE TO HELP INSURE GOOD CGLD WEAT-IER STARTING. * Under certain conditions, such as very tall grass, it may be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of grass clippings: - For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut and raise the rear of the lawn mower housing one (!) wheel adjuster setting higher than the front for better discharge of grass. • For better grass bagging and most cutting conditions, the engine speed should be set in the fast (@) position. WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage Of 30 days or longer. Drain the fuel tank, start the engine and let it run until fuel lines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fue nex_ season. See Storage Instructions i_or additional information. Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in fuel tank or permanent damage may occur. To start a cold engine, push primer five (5) times before trying to start. Use afirm push. This step is not usually necessary when starting an engine which has already run for a few minutes. Move engine speed control lever to fast (,t_) position. o Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starter handle quickly. DO not allow starter rope to snap back. - To stop engine, re!ease operator presence controi bar. When using a rear discharge lawn.mower in moist, heavy grass, clumps of cut grass may not enter the grass catcher. Reduce ground speed (pushing speed) and/or run the lawn mower over the area a second time. * If atrail of grass clippings is left onthe right side of a rear discharge iawn mower, mow m a clockwise direction with a small overiap to collect the clippings on the next pass. , Keep top ofengine around starter clear and clean of grass clippings and chaff. This will help engine airflow and extend engine life. Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt and dust with use and catchers will Collect less grass. To prevent this, regularly hose catchers off with water anc_let dry before using. TO START ENGINE , o NOTE: In cooler weather it may be necessary to repeat priming steps. In warmer weather over priming may cause flooding and engine witl not start. If you.do flood engine, wait a few minutes before attempting to start and do not repeat priming steps. 10 OPERATION MULCHING MOWING TiPS iMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND TRASH. SEE "CLEANING" IN CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES SECTION OF THIS MANUAL. MAX 113 The special mulching blade will recut the grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fall onto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn. Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will provide the best recutting action of the blades. Avoid cutting you r lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tends to form Clumps and interferes with the mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut:area will not be exposed to the direct sun. FIG, 10 Forbest results, adjust the lawn mower cutting height so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grass blades (See Fig, t0). If the lawn is overgrown it wil! be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing efforE and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving cJumps of mulched grass, For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut by overlapping previously cut path and mow slowly, ® Certain types of grass and grass conditions may require that an area be mulched a second time to completely hide the clippings. When doing a second cut. mow across or perpendicular to the first cut path, Change your cutting pattern from week to week. MOW no rth to south one week then change to east to west the next week. This wil! help prevent matting and graining of the lawn. 11 CUSTOMER MAINTENANCE RESPO LITI SCHEDULE FILL iN DATES AS YOU COMPLETE REGULAR SERVICE I SERVICE DATES Check for Loose Fasteners M I Clean/Inspect Grass Catcher (if Equipped) O E R Clean Under Drive Cover (Seif:Prolc Mowers) ChecWSharpeniReptace Blade Lubrication Chart Clean Battery/Recharge Start Mowers E Check Engine Oil Level H Ch_nge Engine Oil G OJean Air Filter N Clean or Re E Rel ;'tace Air Filter Paper Cartridge hspect 1 - Change P,,4 uffle r more often Plug when operating under a heaw load or in high ambient temperatures. 2 - Service more often when operating in dirty or dusty conditions. 3 - Replace blades more often when mowing in sandy soil 4 - Charge 48 hours at end of season.
