pruning this spring:
Do not prune spring-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia or lilac now;
you will remove flowerbuds that already exist. Instead, prune them just after flowering, as their blooms begin to fade.
When deadheading roses this spring and summer, prune back to just
the first 5-leaf cluster.
If trimming down hybrid tea roses before their buds have broken
dormancy, trim to 12 inches above that knobby base graft.
For trees, remove suckers and water shoots (straight sprouts that arise from the lateral branches, especially found in crabapples) that just sap away energy.
For woody, deciduous shrubs, encourage branching by cutting tips
back to 1/2 inch or so above a node that points outward, or towards the
direction you wish it to grow.
