Protecting Your Computer from Viruses 199 NOTE z We recommend that you back up your data regularly. Even if your computer is infected with a virus, it is possible to reinstall the system and recover your data from the backup. Using Antivirus Software Especially in the following cases, we recommend you perform a virus check. Be sure to use the most up-to-date antivirus software when checking for viruses: z After booting your computer z Set your anti-virus software to check for viruses when sending or receiving e-mail z After receiving data We recommend that you check data received on disks or from external sources, such as data downloaded from the network, Internet, e-mail, etc. (For compressed files, decompression may be required before running a check.) Using Windows Firewall Windows Firewall protects a computer from unlawful access via the Internet. At the time of purchase, the firewall is set to "Enable." Make the settings by the following methods: A Click [start] - [Control Panel] - [Security Center] - [Windows Firewall]. B Click [General], [Exceptions], [Advanced], and if necessary, change the settings and click [OK]. NOTE z Some network-related software and some online network games do not operate normally if the Windows Firewall is enabled. Ask the software manufacturer about the Windows Firewall when using such software. Refer also to "Problems with Notification Area". (Î page 176) In addition, depending on the usage conditions, the Windows Firewall may not work properly.
